Korean crypto exchange Upbit launches BTC-ETH Duo Index

Web3 & Enterprise·March 12, 2024, 4:01 AM

Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s leading crypto exchange Upbit, announced today that it launched a new crypto price tracking service, Bitcoin-Ethereum Duo Index (Duo Index). The news was reported by the local media outlet Etoday.

The service tracks the two most prominent tokens, Bitcoin and Ethereum, each being the top performer and the runner-up in terms of market capitalization in the crypto asset market. It is a strategy index that equally weights Bitcoin and Ethereum, with their holding ratio updated to 1:1 every month. The weightings of the two cryptocurrencies in the index are subject to an adjustment factor, which is based on their prices. The BTC-ETC Duo Index is currently available on the Upbit Cryptocurrency Index (UBCI) website.

The Federal Reserve’s approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January has drawn significant attention from many investors, driving up the prices not only of Bitcoin but also Ethereum. Dunamu explained that this heightened interest surrounding Bitcoin and Ethereum is the reason behind its launch of the Duo Index.

New tool to boost crypto portfolio’s performance

Referencing the Duo Index can help investors estimate their own crypto assets portfolios and boost their performances based on the indicators it offers, including the winning rate of the two coins combined.

The current winning rate of the Duo Index stands at over 58%, which is three percentage points higher than that of the Upbit Market Index (UBMI), which tracks not only Bitcoin and Ethereum but also other altcoins. The high winning rate of the Duo Index demonstrates the bullish sentiment surrounding the two top coins.

A Dunamu official stated that the company will continue to keep up with the crypto market trend and further release other strategy indices that would serve the emerging needs of the investors.

Credit Saison launches $50M blockchain fund, deepening push into emerging markets

Credit Saison, one of the largest credit card issuers in Japan, is accelerating its global venture strategy with the creation of Onigiri Capital, a new fund targeting early-stage startups building on blockchain technology. Set up in Singapore last month through Credit Saison’s corporate venture arm, Saison Capital, the vehicle is aiming for up to $50 million in commitments and will run for 10 years, with an optional two-year extension. The fund has already secured $35 million toward its target.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashBuilding on a fintech track recordThe initiative is part of Credit Saison’s broader plan to expand in emerging markets and spur innovation in financial services, drawing on Saison Capital’s track record. Established in 2019, the venture arm has backed fintech startups across Asia and, since 2021, has increasingly focused on blockchain-based finance, investing in more than 40 companies. The firm said those investments laid the groundwork for Onigiri Capital, which will also enable other financial institutions to invest alongside Credit Saison in promising blockchain ventures. Onigiri Capital will concentrate on five areas: stablecoins, payments, asset tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi), and financial infrastructure. The fund will invest primarily at the seed and early stages, with an emphasis on long-term growth. Managing the fund are Qin En Looi, a partner at Saison Capital involved in over 40 blockchain investments, and Hans de Back, a venture investor with more than two decades of experience. Cross-border stablecoin pilotThe launch comes as Japan steps up efforts in digital assets beyond investment alone. According to Electronic Times, the first phase of “Project Pax,” a cross-border stablecoin remittance pilot involving financial institutions in Japan and South Korea, concluded successfully last week. Participants were Progmat—a tokenization platform backed by a consortium of major institutions, including MUFG—along with Datachain and Shoko Chukin Bank from Japan, and Shinhan Bank, NH Nonghyup Bank, and Kbank from South Korea. Fair Square Lab and Korea Digital Asset Custody helped develop an application programming interface (API) for the trial. The pilot demonstrated the feasibility of a network that converts fiat currency into stablecoins for on-chain transfers and then back into local currency at the destination, an approach expected to reduce the time and cost of cross-border payments. The results add momentum to Japan’s bid to modernize financial infrastructure, a backdrop that Onigiri Capital aims to capitalize on as it deploys capital into the sector.

Ripple Collaborates with Hong Kong Regulator in RWA Tokenization

Ripple Collaborates with Hong Kong Regulator in RWA TokenizationIn a demonstration of an extended use case, Ripple, the real-time gross settlement system, currency exchange, and remittance network, has announced that it has been selected by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to showcase a real world asset (RWA) tokenization solution.Photo by Redd F on UnsplashReal world asset (RWA) tokenizationIn a press release published on Thursday, the San Francisco-based firm outlined that the objective of its participation in the HKMAs inaugural e-HKD Pilot Program is to showcase a particular approach to real estate tokenization. In principle the e-HKD project is a central bank digital currency (CBDC) scheme.Ripple is one of sixteen firms that will participate in the program. Among the other participants are HSBC, one of the largest banking and financial services institutions in the world, British multinational bank Standard Chartered, and Bank of China (Hong Kong). For its part, Ripple will partner with Fubon Bank, a subsidiary of one of the largest financial holding companies in Taiwan. The e-HKD Pilot Program will feature a series of pilots conducted through several industry players with a view towards carrying out in-depth research into application, implementation, and design issues relative to the e-HKD.Real estate tokenization is a leading example of RWA tokenization, which overall is anticipated to become a multi-trillion dollar industry by the end of this decade. Its plan is to build the solution on a private and secure ledger, guided in principle by the same technology that the company has utilized for XRP, the native token of the Ripple ecosystem.Illiquid assetsThe company points out that people’s homes are usually one of their primary assets. Notwithstanding that, unlocking value in real estate can be problematic, having considerable friction. The idea is that this illiquid wealth can be unlocked through tokenization. It’s a concept that is seeing a lot of interest from competing projects. Start-ups like Securitize and Provenance Blockchain would be among a long list of start-up firms that see the potential in the tokenization of RWAs.In Asia, Japanese trading and investment firm Mitsui has gotten involved in the tokenization of real estate through its Alterna investment platform. Tokeny and CoFund offer other examples of innovators that are pioneering real estate tokenization. In its press release, Ripple outlined that it aims to use its technology in this particular instance to enable Hong Kong citizens to experience the faster and more efficient release of equity relative to real estate.James Wallis, Ripple’s VP of Central Bank Engagements & CBDCs, expanded on this idea further:“The Asia Pacific region has many forward-looking regulators such as the HKMA, who are looking to leverage the capabilities of blockchain and crypto technology. It’s a huge honor for Ripple to be one of the select few organizations participating in the HKMA’s e-HKD Pilot Programme. We now have the opportunity to demonstrate how real estate asset tokenization could be brought to the citizens of Hong Kong, and are confident that our fully integrated solution will be an industry-first use case demonstrating the power of leveraging a CBDC for real estate equity asset release.”
