Huobi Delists USDD Stablecoin Pairs

Markets·June 27, 2023, 12:44 AM

Huobi Global, the Seychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange, has made the decision to delist ten trading pairs, primarily involving tokens used in transactions with the USDD stablecoin issued by the TRON DAO Reserve.

That’s according to an announcement published to Huobi’s website on Monday. These tokens are supported by TRON founder Justin Sun, who also acts as an advisor to Huobi. The delisting, effective from June 29, will impact several tokens, including the Cardano blockchain token ADA, Solana’s SOL, ApeCoin’s native token APE, MATIC from Polygon, FIL from Filecoin, and ETC from Ethereum Classic.

Unregistered securities

All of these tokens were offered on the Houbi platform in pairs with USDD. Additionally, trading pairs involving ARPA, GAS, QTUM, and ZKS with Bitcoin will also be removed from the platform. Huobi stated that these changes are aimed at providing users with an improved trading experience.

Originating from China, Huobi has played a significant role in spot and derivatives trading for digital assets. The decision to delist these tokens follows their classification as unregistered securities in recent lawsuits by the US Securities and Exchange Commission against Binance and Coinbase. Prior to Huobi, Robinhood and eToro had already removed some of these tokens from their platforms.

Stablecoins are designed to maintain a stable value by pegging them to less volatile assets like the US dollar. They achieve this by holding equivalent reserves of cash and cash-equivalent assets as collateral. Stablecoins are widely used by traders for transferring funds between exchanges and as a hedge against price volatility. This makes them some of the most heavily-traded tokens in the crypto space.

USDD stability

USDD, the stablecoin at the center of this delisting, currently ranks as the eighth largest stablecoin by market capitalization, with approximately $750 million. Huobi is the primary exchange for buying and trading USDD, according to CoinGecko, a crypto market data provider. USDD is backed by various digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, and TRX, and it is issued by the TRON DAO Reserve. The TRON DAO Reserve operates as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), utilizing blockchain technology to automate voting and transaction processes.

USDD is an algorithmic stablecoin, with the assets held in backing the coin over-collateralized to a level of 170%. Despite this, the stablecoin has had issues in maintaining its US dollar peg from time to time. The issue has been that the token is partly backed by the TRX token, the native token of the TRON ecosystem. If TRX backing is discounted, the stablecoin is only 49% backed.

Reports indicate that Sun acquired a controlling stake in Huobi through a Hong Kong-based asset manager, reportedly paying around $1 billion in November. However, Sun hasn’t provided any details of any such ownership stake.

Huobi’s decision to delist these trading pairs reflects the evolving regulatory landscape and the need for exchanges to ensure compliance with securities regulations. By removing tokens that have faced legal scrutiny, Huobi aims to maintain a robust and compliant trading environment for its users.

Ng also expressed his intent to collaborate with relevant institutions and enterprises to provide Buterin with insights into Hong Kong’s current situation.Vitalik Buterin had voiced his concerns at the Web3 Transition Summit in Singapore on Thursday. Buterin stated:“If any crypto project wants to make Hong Kong their home, they would want to have some confidence — not just that it’s friendly now but that it will continue to be friendly years from now when all kinds of unknown, regulatory and political and other kinds of events are going to happen.”He acknowledged that he did not possess an in-depth understanding of Hong Kong’s intricacies, particularly in light of recent developments in its relationship with mainland China. Buterin emphasized the need for crypto projects to have confidence not only in Hong Kong’s current crypto-friendliness but also in its ability to maintain this stance amidst unforeseen regulatory, political, and other events. In response to Buterin’s remarks, Ng reassured him that Hong Kong’s crypto-related policies were not prone to sudden changes. He highlighted that these policies had been formulated with broad social consensus and underwent comprehensive procedural assessments. Ng asserted: “Therefore, I can tell Mr. Vitalik that Hong Kong’s policies are very stable.”He further elaborated on Hong Kong’s legislative process, emphasizing the stages of government policy drafting, public consultation, discussions within multiple committees of the Legislative Council, and the General Assembly’s review.Best-prepared crypto jurisdictionIn a separate development, Hong Kong has maintained its position as the best-prepared jurisdiction for widespread cryptocurrency adoption in 2023, according to a recently published study. The Chinese autonomous territory secured the top rank for the second consecutive year. This recognition is based on a crypto readiness score (CRS) that takes into account factors such as the presence of crypto ATMs, the regulatory environment, accessibility, and legality. In contrast, the United States slipped to third place, experiencing a 6.5% drop in its CRS score from the previous year. Switzerland emerged as the second-best-prepared jurisdiction, with its CRS score surging by over 9%.The Dutch demonstrated the highest per capita interest in crypto, while Hong Kong stood out for having the most crypto ATMs per square foot due to its smaller landmass. Report Cites Escalating Crypto Use by Pro-ISIS Groups

Report Cites Escalating Crypto Use by Pro-ISIS GroupsA recently published report suggests that pro-ISIS terrorist groups in central and southeast Asia and the Middle East are increasing their use of cryptocurrency.According to the report which was published on Friday by blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs, cryptocurrency has become a favored tool for terrorist organizations, with ISIS affiliates showing an increasing preference for the Tron network’s USDT stablecoin. The report highlights that terrorist groups worldwide, including those linked to ISIS, are actively utilizing cryptocurrencies for fundraising purposes, allowing them to attract supporters and bolster their operations.Photo by David McBee on PexelsOn-chain evidenceTRM Labs has been closely monitoring these activities over the past year and has uncovered a growing amount of on-chain evidence. Pro-ISIS networks in countries such as Tajikistan, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have been observed using crypto assets to facilitate their illicit activities, with Tether (USDT) stablecoin on the Tron network (TRX) being their preferred choice for transactions. The disturbing revelations show how recruited fighters were enticed to join ISIS’ Afghanistan affiliate (ISKP) through the use of cryptocurrency fundraising campaigns. One such campaign operated for over a year and managed an address that received approximately $2 million in USDT on Tron in 2022. TRM Labs played a role in getting the operation dismantled, leading to the arrest of Shamil Hukumatov, a senior ISIS fundraiser allegedly responsible for the scheme.Indonesia & PakistanIn Indonesia, individuals used a crypto platform to transfer over $517,000 in 2022 to addresses linked to pro-ISIS fundraising campaigns in Syria, all using USDT on Tron. This connection demonstrates the global reach and sophistication of the terrorist groups’ crypto operations.Additionally, a media unit associated with ISPP, the Pakistan affiliate of ISIS, ramped up its fundraising efforts in the latter half of 2022. The entity sought to capitalize on natural disasters, such as earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, to raise funds by publicizing various cryptocurrency addresses flagged by TRM Labs as associated with the terrorist organization.SyriaTRM Labs’ investigation ultimately points to pro-ISIS fundraising campaigns in Syria as a central hub for cryptocurrency usage by the terrorist group and its supporters. A significant portion of the donations ends up supporting ISIS families in camps like al-Hol and Roj, as well as funding local cryptocurrency exchanges that facilitate the group’s activities. For TRM Labs, the identification and tracking of these campaigns and their donors are crucial steps in mapping out and potentially disrupting pro-ISIS networks worldwide. Their efforts aim to mitigate the risks posed by the misuse of cryptocurrencies in financing terrorism and illegal activities. The rising adoption of cryptocurrencies by terrorist organizations poses significant challenges to law enforcement agencies and regulatory authorities worldwide. It’s a worrying development for legitimate users of digital assets as it may result in far more heavy-handed regulation as a direct consequence.Under these circumstances, it is crucial for the crypto community, governments, and regulatory bodies to collaborate in implementing effective safeguards against the abuse of digital currencies for nefarious purposes. Only through collective action can this threat be neutralized.

Bit Origin makes first purchase following DOGE treasury announcement

Bit Origin, the Nasdaq-listed (BTOG) pork processor turned crypto mining infrastructure firm, has acquired 40.5 million Dogecoin (DOGE), the company’s first purchase of the world’s largest memecoin by market cap since it announced that it was establishing a Dogecoin treasury. In a press release published on July 17, the Singapore-headquartered company with operations in the United States, Canada and China, set out that it would become the “first publicly listed company on a major US exchange to accumulate Dogecoin as a core asset.”Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash$500 million treasury fundingThe firm outlined that it had entered into agreements with accredited investors, implicating the sale of $400 million in Class A ordinary shares in the company. An additional $100 million unlocked via convertible debt brought funding for its Dogecoin treasury to $500 million. Jinghai Jiang, Bit Origin’s CEO and Chairman, asserted that “what started as a joke has evolved into a globally liquid asset with a payments utility.” Jiang asserted that very few digital assets match the settlement speed and scale of community that Dogecoin offers. X Money potentialIn particular, he singled out the potential use of DOGE for X Money, a new payment system that is in the process of being established by Elon Musk’s X social media platform. Alongside many proponents of the cryptocurrency, Bit Origin is hoping that Musk will implement the use of DOGE to power X money. Jiang added:“In an age of broken institutions, Doge embodies a shared culture of optimism and resilience that transcends existing political and financial systems.” On social media, the company outlined that it believes in “Dogecoin not just as a meme, but as a future payments backbone.” Having utilized the services of Chardan Capital Markets as a placement agent, the company has already completed an initial closing of $15 million under the convertible debt facility that has been established.  On July 21, Bit Origin published another press release, detailing the acquisition of 40,543,745 DOGE with the memecoin holding having been purchased at an average acquisition cost of $0.2466 per DOGE.  Nearing inflection point for paymentsCommenting on the development, Jiang stated:“From our experience in mining, we understand the tradeoffs that define proof-of-work systems. We see Dogecoin’s utility potential for micropayments nearing an inflection point, driven by renewed developer activity and broader institutional interest in tokenization.” Dogecoin emerged in December 2013 having been developed by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke. The project borrowed much of its code from Bitcoin. Despite having originated as a joke, the project has developed a sizeable community. The digital asset currently holds a market capitalization of $40.5 billion, according to CoinMarketCap data.  Bit Origin rebranded from China Xiangtai Food Co., Ltd. in April 2022. Up until that point, it had been involved in the pork processing business. The company pivoted to crypto mining, partnering with MineOne on a Wyoming mining facility in the United States. The facility was ordered to be shut down by the former Biden administration on the basis of it being a national security risk to have a Chinese project located within a mile of a U.S. Air Force base that houses nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.
