Report: Can Bitcoin Replace Gold As a Safe Asset?

Markets·April 24, 2023, 9:07 AM

In light of the substantial increase in Bitcoin (BTC) prices this year, a report from KB Financial Group in South Korea examined the potential for BTC to replace gold as a safe asset.

The study delves into the factors behind the recent BTC price surge and emphasizes the need for caution when considering BTC as an alternative to traditional safe assets.

3 drivers behind BTC surge

From January 1 to March 31 this year, BTC experienced an impressive return of 71%. This surge can be attributed to three main factors: an anticipated increase in liquidity due to market expectations of unchanged or falling interest rates; central banks supplying liquidity to mitigate risks in the traditional banking system; and concerns over the potential delisting of cryptocurrencies should the US court’s decision on the Ripple-SEC case classify XRP, Ripple’s native token, as securities, prompting investors to shift their focus to BTC.

The report suggests that the current BTC boom is more likely a result of short-term arbitrages and social conformity, given the greater information asymmetry in the crypto market, which lacks the disclosure system present in traditional stock markets.

Persisting risk factors

Last month, blockchain tracker Whale Alert spotted a transfer of 11,125 BTC from an anonymous address to Binance. The primary reason for moving assets from a private address to an exchange address is to sell them, indicating that investors should keep a watchful eye on Bitcoin trading volumes, particularly for any signs of large sell-offs.

Data from the crypto data analysis platform Glassnode revealed that the percentage of the BTC supply that was active over a year ago reached an all-time high of 68% in late March. Historically, such an increase has been associated with falling BTC prices.

This year, the BTC supply is set to grow due to the US government’s liquidation of seized BTC. As detailed in a March 31 Cointelegraph article, the US government seized 51,352 BTC in a case related to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the online black market Silk Road. The government has already sold 9,861 BTC, with the remaining amount expected to be liquidated in four additional portions throughout the year.

Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, has been struggling to find banks in the US to store client funds after crypto-friendly banks Silvergate and Signature closed their doors.

Need for caution

Although various media sources often portray BTC as a safe asset, the report advises caution in accepting these claims. Although some liken BTC to “digital gold,” the two assets share little in common beyond their finite and scarce nature. In fact, gold and BTC diverge significantly in terms of social consensus, intrinsic value, price volatility, and investor protection.

Gold serves as a highly liquid asset with applications in both jewelry and industrial goods, in addition to its role as an investment vehicle. In contrast, BTC’s intrinsic value is still debatable. The price volatility of BTC is also a concern, as evidenced by its 71% spike in the first quarter of 2023, compared to gold’s modest 8% increase. Additionally, gold investment products are regulated by law, whereas BTC is not. The report thus recommends treating BTC as a high-risk product and incorporating it into a diverse investment portfolio.

It is worth noting that since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crypto market has demonstrated a stronger correlation with the global stock market in response to negative signals. This trend can be partially attributed to the growing presence of institutional investors in the crypto market, who often sell risky assets first to secure liquidity in the face of unexpected shocks.

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH Debt

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH DebtCoinFLEX, a Seychelles-based crypto yield platform that operated the BCH to sBCH cross-chain bridge, has taken a significant step towards its restructuring plans by partially repaying its debts to SmartBCH Alliance.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on PexelsBitcoin Cash sidechainAs part of the repayment, SmartBCH, a Bitcoin Cash sidechain compatible with Ethereum, received distributions from CoinFLEX, including approximately 4.28 million rvUSD ($750,000), 652,000 USDC ($652,000), and 6,834 BCH ($1.6 million). Notably, 80% of the received USDC has been swapped into Bitcoin Cash, while the remaining portion has been reserved to cover legal and operational expenses. SmartBCH currently holds a total of 10,758 BCH.The repayment to SmartBCH comes amidst a significant surge in the price of Bitcoin Cash, which has witnessed a remarkable increase of over 110% in the past seven days. This surge has positioned Bitcoin Cash as a top performer among major currencies in the crypto market, according to data from CoinGecko.Bitcoin Cash, along with other Bitcoin forks, has been benefiting from the overall rise in the cryptocurrency market. The increased interest can be attributed to the flurry of spot Bitcoin ETF filings that have taken place recently. The positive developments surrounding CoinFLEX and Bitcoin Cash have also had a ripple effect on associated tokens. $FLEX and $OX, tokens connected to CoinFLEX, have experienced notable increases in value, rising by 53% and 65% respectively over the past week.CoinFLEX itself has been undergoing a significant restructuring process that was approved by the Seychelles Courts on March 6. The exchange initially suspended withdrawals in June 2022, citing extreme market conditions and uncertainty related to a counterparty.CoinFLEX was one of several crypto firms affected by the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in May 2022, resulting in the loss of over $40 billion in investor value within a short period. In September, the company revealed its restructuring proposal, which involved offering over 65% of its equity to creditors and allocating 15% to employees.OPNX rebrandLast March, CoinFLEX rebranded itself as Open Exchange (OPNX) following the approval of its restructuring plan. The founders of CoinFLEX, Mark Lamb and Sudhu Arumugam, are collaborating with Kyle Davies and Su Zhu, the co-founders of the bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), on the new Dubai-based venture.SmartBCH has announced its intention to open an account on OPNX and gradually convert rvUSD into Bitcoin Cash through the exchange. It is worth noting that, as part of the restructuring terms, SmartBCH is entitled to common equity in CoinFLEX and one board seat, although it has not received these benefits at present.Additionally, SmartBCH has burned 33,365.67 sBCH tokens, returning them to the old bridge address. As a result, the total sBCH in circulation on the sidechain now amounts to 67,756.766.To further enhance stability, SmartBCH has entered into an agreement with CoinFLEX to assume responsibility for maintaining the 1:1 peg between sBCH (the sidechain’s native token) and BCH.

Bitstamp awarded MPI license in Singapore

Singaporean regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has awarded cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp a Major Payment Institution (MPI) trading license.Photo by Julien de Salaberry on UnsplashExpanding into APACIn a blog post published on July 3, Bitstamp proclaimed that it is “globally trusted & now licensed in Singapore.” The company described the acquisition of the license as a milestone that “marks the start of [its] expansion into the APAC region.” It emerged in June 2024 that Bitstamp had been acquired by American trading platform Robinhood. The $200 million acquisition was finally completed last month. Bitstamp signaled last September that it planned to expand its institutional business across Australia and Asia. Earlier this year, parent company Robinhood outlined that it would use Bitstamp to crypto offerings in Singapore in 2025.Acquiring licensesAt that time, Johann Kerbrat, vice-president and general manager of Robinhood Crypto, said that “part of the reason why Bitstamp was attractive was because of their licenses with Singapore, in addition to its institutional business.” This latest license award strengthens the company’s efforts in gaining more traction in Asia. Licensing is all the more relevant given the recent actions of the Singaporean regulator. Last month, MAS set a June 30 deadline for unlicensed crypto firms operating out of the city-state and serving overseas customers to cease offering such services. Over recent years, Singapore has been striving towards establishing itself as a global hub for crypto startups. It has been successful in that endeavor insofar as a whole host of international crypto businesses have established a presence there.  However, its recent move to curb unlicensed firms working out of Singapore in providing services internationally has been interpreted as a much more cautious approach being taken by the Singaporean authorities. The regulator clarified its concerns recently:”MAS has set the bar high for licensing and will generally not issue a licence. The money laundering risks are higher in such business models and if their substantive regulated activity is outside of Singapore, MAS is unable to effectively supervise such persons. Without a licence, such DTSPs [Digital Token Service Providers] will have to cease their regulated activities.”Caution in Singapore to benefit Hong KongSingapore has been competing with cities like Hong Kong to develop and maintain that crypto hub status. Some commentators have expressed the view that Hong Kong will benefit from this latest move in Singapore.  Joshua Chu, a lawyer who co-chairs the Hong Kong Web3 Association, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently that “this is likely to attract quality projects [to Hong Kong] looking for a compliant, liquid, and globally connected base.” In addition to licensing achieved in Asia, Bitstamp has acquired licensing in a number of European countries such as Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands. Last month, Robinhood launched the trading of tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for users resident within the European Union (EU). It also revealed that it is in the process of building out a layer-2 network on top of the Arbitrum blockchain with a view towards using it to host tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
