“This cooperation lays the foundation for Metawon Campus to establish itself as a practical university education platform. Through the integration of ABC Wallet, we will strive to build it into a global education metaverse based on the fundamental standards of stability, convenience and scalability,” said Hyun Dae-won, Dean of Sogang University’s Graduate School of Metaverse.

Advancing security and accessibility

This project mainly entails the integration of AhnLab Blockchain Company’s digital ABC Wallet within the platform. As a non-custodial wallet, this service uses multi-party computation to support multiple blockchain networks including Ethereum, Polygon and Klaytn. This integration has the potential to enhance the security and usability of Metawon Campus, encouraging international students to participate. To further boost security, the platform will also utilize non-transferrable SoulBound tokens (SBTs) issued by ABC Wallet. By providing services in multiple languages, the platform will be available to a wider user base as well.

Comprehensive cooperation

In addition to technological collaborations, the two parties agreed to work on R&D and marketing as well as content creation aimed at enhancing participant engagement and accessibility to education.

Kang Suk-kyun, CEO of AhnLab Blockchain Company, emphasized the role that ABC Wallet would play in helping international students experience a more secure and liberal virtual environment on Metawon Campus. He went on to reaffirm the company’s efforts to contribute to the popularization of the metaverse and the advancement of blockchain technology.

SC Ventures Exits Digital Asset Custody Infrastructure Investment

SC Ventures Exits Digital Asset Custody Infrastructure InvestmentSC Ventures, the Singapore-headquartered corporate venture capital arm of Standard Chartered Bank, has announced its decision to divest its stake in Metaco, a Swiss-based digital asset custody firm. As one of Metaco’s early adopters, SC Ventures played a crucial role in supporting the company’s growth and development.Photo by Pixabay on PexelsDissolving a partnershipHaving been the largest institutional investor in the digital custody infrastructure firm, SC Ventures contributed significantly to the enhancement of Metaco’s award-winning custody product. The partnership between the two entities facilitated valuable contributions in various areas, including corporate governance, business strategy, institutional use cases, and access to SC Ventures’ extensive ecosystem. Through their collaboration, SC Ventures aimed to provide institutions with a secure and compliant ecosystem for operating digital assets.Ripple acquisitionIn a recent development, enterprise blockchain company Ripple acquired Metaco for $250 million. Ripple’s acquisition of Metaco signifies its diversification into custody solutions, expanding its business opportunities within the blockchain sector. With this move, Ripple aims to offer its customers technology that enables custody, issuance, and settlement of various types of tokenized assets. Further evidence of Ripple’s interest in this area emerged last week with the news that the company is collaborating with authorities in Hong Kong to showcase real world asset tokenization.Despite the acquisition, Metaco will continue to operate as an independent brand and business unit, under the leadership of its founder and CEO, Adrien Treccani. This decision ensures continuity and stability for Metaco’s existing clients and partners while benefiting from the resources and support provided by Ripple.Ongoing linkWhile the divestment of a division of an international banking behemoth like Standard Chartered from a digital asset infrastructure firm may seem like a bad news story, it’s likely not that straightforward. It’s worth noting that Zodia Custody, itself a digital assets custody venture incubated by SC Ventures, continues to maintain a strategic partnership with Metaco. The ongoing collaboration between Zodia Custody and Metaco focuses on matters related to compliance and risk management. This partnership ensures that both companies can leverage their respective expertise to address the increasing demand for safe and compliant access to cryptocurrencies and digital assets from institutional investors.Despite this divestment, it appears that SC Ventures still recognizes the importance of supporting emerging technologies on the cusp of adoption through its continued involvement with Zodia Custody, continuing advancements in the digital asset space.SC Ventures’ exit from its stake in Metaco marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of both companies. While SC Ventures has played a vital role in Metaco’s growth, the acquisition by Ripple opens up new opportunities for Metaco to expand its offerings and cater to a broader customer base. Meanwhile, the collaboration between Zodia Custody, Metaco, and SC Ventures ensures that institutional investors have access to secure and compliant solutions as the demand for digital asset services continues to rise.

OKX launches OKX TR in Turkey

Leading global crypto exchange platform OKX has officially launched OKX TR, a specialized crypto exchange tailored to meet the needs of users in Turkey. This unveiling, announced on Feb. 27, marks a significant stride in the company’s efforts to offer Turkish users greater access to cryptocurrency trading and decentralized finance (DeFi).Photo by Engin Yapici on UnsplashOKX Wallet integrationOKX TR has integrated OKX's Web3 wallet, providing Turkish users with access to a wide array of features. The wallet offers a user-friendly portal for trading non-fungible tokens (NFTs), utilizing decentralized applications (dApps). Noteworthy features of the OKX Wallet include multi-party computation (MPC) technology and account abstraction (AA), enhancing accessibility for users with varying levels of technical expertise.OKX TR introduces localized features designed to cater specifically to Turkish users, including direct deposits and withdrawals in Turkish Lira, facilitated through strategic partnerships with banking institutions such as Fibabanka, VakıfBank, Ziraat Bankası, İş Bankası, Şekerbank and Türkiye Finans. The platform offers a range of major cryptocurrency pairs for trading, including USDT/TRY, BTC/TRY and ETH/TRY.  Moreover, OKX TR prioritizes user experience by providing round-the-clock customer support in both Turkish and English, attempting to provide prompt assistance and comprehensive guidance whenever needed. Crypto adoption backdropThe platform’s arrival should contribute further towards the burgeoning crypto ecosystem in Turkey, a market boasting a close to 50% adoption rate for cryptocurrencies. A report by OKX rival platform KuCoin back in August of last year found that there had been a significant increase in crypto users in Turkey over the course of the previous 18 months.  It’s believed that crypto adoption in Turkey is being driven partly by its role as a financial lifeline amid economic challenges. The country’s sovereign currency, the lira, has suffered from runaway inflation in recent years. On social media OKX Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Haider Rafique wrote that the new service offers “lightning fast signup and funding,” alongside the “lowest fees in the market.” Mehmet Çamır, Chairman of OKX TR, outlined that the company had first announced expansion into Turkey in May 2023. Çamır set out the company’s intentions within the Turkish market, stating:"The launch of OKX TR represents more than just an expansion; it signifies our pledge to equip users with a transparent, compliant and user-friendly gateway to the world of blockchain. . . . We can unlock the vast potential of the Turkish crypto community and pave the way towards a future where finance is more inclusive and transparent.” Turkey is in the process of introducing a raft of crypto regulations, primarily with the intention of enabling it to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) “grey list.” In December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed blockchain and cryptocurrency expert Fatma Ozkul to the Turkish central bank’s rate-setting committee. Those moves demonstrate some positive progress from the point of Erdogan’s statement in 2021 when he declared “a war on crypto.”
