Klaytn Foundation and Finschia Foundation to jointly launch largest blockchain network in Asia

Web3 & Enterprise·January 17, 2024, 9:39 AM

The Klaytn Foundation and Finschia Foundation have jointly submitted a governance proposal to launch a new mainnet created by merging their respective blockchain ecosystems. The proposals have been submitted for open discussion, with voting scheduled for Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, according to an official announcement on Wednesday (KST).

The main objective of this initiative is to create Asia’s largest Web3 ecosystem by combining key features of both blockchains. To do so, the two foundations plan to share their technologies, services and business networks and fortify connections between their partners like their mother companies Kakao and LINE, who have contributed to their development and expansion.

“We are excited to be taking the first step toward unlocking the enormous synergy of merging the public blockchains started by Kakao and LINE, which are both leading IT companies in Asia,” the two foundations said. “We will give our best to make this merge an opportunity to innovate and lead the Asian blockchain industry in both technology and adoption.”

An unprecedented mainnet ecosystem

The merger will bring together Klaytn and Finschia’s networks in different Asian countries, like Klaytn’s leverage in South Korea, Singapore and Vietnam, and Finschia’s service network in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Abu Dhabi. Once the combined ecosystem is launched, it will offer over 420 decentralized apps (dApps) and services, 45 governance partners and some 450 Web3 resources, becoming a mammoth Web3 network capable of swaying the trajectory of the Asian market. In addition, the blockchain will be connected with both Kakao and LINE messengers – two well-known messenger apps in Asia – opening up access to a vast continental user base of over 250 million people.

The integration is also expected to catalyze the creation of new Web3 infrastructure in Asia, boosting scalability and liquidity.

Future business plans

The joint foundation is specifically set to undertake projects in areas like RWA tokenization, GameFi, DeFi verticals, messenger-based Web3 services and digital commerce through partnerships with Japanese, South Korean and Southeast Asian firms. By leveraging its access to Kakaotalk and LINE users, the new public blockchain has the potential to be a springboard for IT and entertainment enterprises in Asia.

Improved tokenomics

What may especially interest shareholders and users alike is a new native token that will be issued on the merged network, replacing the foundations’ respective tokens KLAY and FNSA. Holders of KLAY and FNSA will be able to swap their tokens for the new one.

The proposed tokenomics system for the new token emphasizes sustainable value creation. This includes a lower base inflation rate and a 3-layer burning model created to encourage deflation as activity on the network increases. 24% of newly issued tokens will also be burned immediately as a trustworthy Zero Reserve Tokenomics measure. This will all be supported via an ecosystem fund and infrastructure fund that are constantly replenished via block rewards, rather than relying on reserves.

Enhanced governance and interoperability

Klaytn and Finschia also plan to bring together their experiences in practicing good governance to build a  permissionless node validation system to put the spotlight on users and the community, promoting transparency, trust and openness.

To support the seamless migration and interoperability of existing dApps and services on Klaytn and Finschia, the merged chain will support the smart contract platforms EVM and CosmWasm. Ethereum and Cosmos builders will thus be able to gain access to the network.

The foundations are set to host an upcoming event called Klaytn Community Town Hall on Friday to introduce the proposal and facilitate open dialogue and feedback.

Kiln raises $17M to fund APAC growth

Kiln, the Paris-based Ethereum staking platform, has successfully secured $17 million in a recent funding round, as revealed in a press release on Thursday. Round led by 1kxThe financing round was spearheaded by 1kx, with participation from Crypto.com, Wintermute Ventures, Thailand’s KXVC and Hong Kong’s LBank and IOSG. This infusion of capital brings Kiln's total funding to $35 million, marking a milestone in the company's growth trajectory. The latest funding follows a previous investment of $17.6 million in 2022 from Illuminate Financial, LeadBlock Partners, Sparkle Ventures, Alven and Blue Yard Capital, among others. Kiln opted not to disclose the valuation associated with the recent funding round. In 2021, Canadian blockchain infrastructure and staking firm Figment reached unicorn status with a $1.4 billion valuation. The Kiln platform has witnessed significant growth, increasing its staked assets under management to $4.2 billion in 2023. Acknowledging that growth on Jan. 4, Fred Lardieg, partner at Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala wrote:”This little-known French startup called @Kiln_finance has been killing it in the #Ethereum #Staking space, by relentlessly releasing new features throughout 2023. They're now the #1 operator of Ethereum validator nodes according to @ratedw3b.” The firm’s expansion is attributed to strategic integrations with various custody solutions, wallets and exchanges over the past year.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashRegional headquarters in SingaporeThe funds raised will be instrumental in facilitating Kiln's global expansion initiatives, including the establishment of its Asia-Pacific (APAC) headquarters in Singapore during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the company aims to allocate resources for further product development to enhance its offerings in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. Laszlo Szabo, CEO and co-founder of Kiln, articulated the company's mission, stating: "Our mission is to democratize value creation in the digital assets ecosystem, providing millions of users with easy access to rewards through our platform." The funds will support Kiln's commitment to making value creation in the digital assets space more accessible globally. The company plans to use the funding not only for expansion but also to introduce additional reward mechanisms in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape. Regulatory uncertaintyWhile Ethereum staking offers users the opportunity to earn yields by validating transactions on the blockchain, the regulatory landscape remains uncertain. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken legal action against several exchanges involved in crypto staking, with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler expressing views on Ethereum-like tokens as potential securities. Despite regulatory challenges, Kiln's staking platform caters to institutional clients, allowing them to stake assets and offer white-label solutions to their customers. With a focus on proof-of-stake blockchains, Kiln holds a significant portion of staked assets on Ethereum, exceeding $3.1 billion, according to its Dune Analytics dashboard. 1kx Founding Partner Christopher Heymann emphasized the increasing role of financial institutions in the crypto space, stating:  "Financial institutions will become a dominant force in crypto, leveraging the immense market opportunity as they stake on behalf of their customers." By utilizing smart contracts, Kiln allows users to stake smaller amounts, overcoming the traditional barrier of a 32 ETH minimum requirement for native ether staking. This approach aligns with Kiln's goal of fostering inclusivity in the rapidly expanding world of decentralized finance.

Korean financial authority to heighten oversight on token listing with new guidelines

The South Korean financial authority will establish new policies and guidelines for token listing and provide admirable examples from past listing events for local exchanges to follow, according to local media outlet News1.  So far, fiat-to-crypto exchanges in Korea have been listing tokens on their platforms under a guideline issued by Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA) – a self-regulatory consultation group comprised of five major Korean crypto exchanges. The existing DAXA guideline outlines basic yet vague instructions, which have allowed exchanges to list tokens largely at their discretion.  However, the new guideline from the financial authority, expected to be released by this June, will mark the government’s first official manual on token listing. This is in line with the upcoming Virtual Asset User Protection Act, which will be effective in July. Photo by Hitesh Choudhary on UnsplashSetting clear guidelines for token listingsThe new guidelines are expected to include examples of past fraud detection and real-time monitoring cases which are deemed to have set precedents for the industry players. Moreover, the financial authority plans to distribute past exemplary cases of token listing as early as April, which is anticipated to set a model listing process and help local crypto exchanges adhere to the law and requirements.  This announcement comes after the local game company Wemade relisted its native token WEMIX on Korbit, one of DAXA's member exchanges, just a year after it was delisted on major exchanges due to its deviant practices in token issuance. The relisting of WEMIX has since raised concerns among crypto insiders about the lack of criteria regarding token listings. More refined token listing process As the crypto market's bullish trend continues, Bithumb and Coinone – the second and third-largest exchanges in Korea – are stepping up their efforts to speed up the listing of new coins. Industry experts expect these exchanges will double down on their efforts in screening and reviewing processes for tokens to align with the new guidelines in the future.  An official from the Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) said that while the anticipated listing process is not legally binding, it will definitely have a more profound impact on local crypto exchanges compared to the self-regulated DAXA guidelines.
