Bithumb’s Burrito Wallet holds Partners Day 2024

Rotonda, a subsidiary of crypto exchange Bithumb that operates Burrito Wallet, announced yesterday that it held “Partners Day 2024.” According to a report by local news outlet Etoday, the event was prepared to share the company’s business plan for this year and its partnership strategies and was attended by 50 stakeholders from 30 companies partnering with Burrito Wallet. The soon-to-be-released service, “Burrito Partners,” was also introduced in the venue. 

 

Following the official launch in February last year, Bithumb’s Burrito Wallet has been collaborating with Web2 and Web3 firms in blockchain service development and co-marketing. Burrito Wallet is dedicated to contributing to bridging Web2 and Web3 ecosystems through forging partnerships.

Soon-to-be-launched service, Burrito Partners 

Burrito Partners is Rotonda’s new service to help its partners with marketing efforts. It has been designed to enhance the workflow and boost the quantitative growth of its partners that struggle with a lack of workforce. 

 

Burrito Wallet will leverage Burrito Partners to provide services that can monitor user events, manage follower and marketing indexes, strengthen user community, provide airdrop solutions and secure transaction data, all of which are expected to maximize marketing performance.

 

“By making partnerships with various companies that share the same values with Bithumb’s Burrito Wallet, we have been able to actively expand the blockchain ecosystem,” said Shin Min-chul, CEO of Burrito Wallet. “We are also planning to roll out a rewarding service for users sometime during next month. Burrito Wallet is dedicated to developing a system where all partners can thrive,” he added.

Taiwan Aims to Propose Special Crypto Law by Late NovemberIn a bid to address growing concerns surrounding offshore crypto exchanges and prevent regulatory arbitrage, Taiwan is actively working towards proposing a draft special crypto law for its first reading by the end of November.Yung-Chang Chiang, a member of the Legislative Yuan, the Taiwanese parliament, emphasized the need for a dedicated crypto asset act to effectively regulate crypto businesses in discussion with The Block on Friday. Chiang believes that cryptocurrencies, as an asset class, significantly differ from traditional financial products and require oversight through a separate, specialized legal framework.Photo by Ian Chen on UnsplashPublic hearingThe Taiwanese politician recently organized a public hearing within the parliament to discuss the draft proposal with key stakeholders, including virtual asset service providers, legal experts, and academics. He argued that while Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) had released guidelines for the crypto sector to establish self-supervisory rules through a potential industry association, these measures lack legal enforceability.Chiang pointed out:“In this case, under the authority of this special law, regulatory authorities can impose administrative penalties on operators who violate these self-regulation rules. Without such a special law, the regulators would lack the ability to impose penalties.”Under the proposed special law, all crypto platforms operating in Taiwan would be required to obtain a permit. Failure to do so could result in regulatory orders to cease operations. Presently, Taiwan mandates that virtual asset service providers comply with anti-money laundering (AML) laws, which were introduced by the FSC in July 2021. However, the broader crypto industry in Taiwan remains largely unregulated.It is unlikely that the special law will pass through all three readings during the current legislative session, which is expected to conclude by the end of this year. Chiang noted: “An election is coming up, and the current legislative session focuses more on reviewing the government’s budget.”Chiang also mentioned the possibility of Taiwan’s FSC proposing its version of the special crypto law, but this is not anticipated until at least mid-2024. He explained: “It’s hard to say exactly when the special law will be enacted, but it should likely occur sometime after the middle of 2024.”Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, is understood to be in the process of registering in Taiwan for AML compliance, despite not currently being regulated in the country. The exchange has formed a local entity named “Binance International Limited Taiwan Branch (Seychelles),” as indicated in the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs’ database.Banking difficultiesDuring the public hearing, Damien Ho, Representative of Global Partnerships at Binance, raised concerns about the challenges faced by crypto platforms in Taiwan in securing suitable banking services. Despite the FSC’s efforts to discourage banks from treating crypto platforms as high-risk entities, crypto platforms still encounter difficulties in their interactions with banks. Ho suggested that the Taiwanese government should encourage private or public banks to become more crypto-friendly, facilitating the regulated and effective development of crypto businesses.At the public hearing, Winston Hsiao, Co-Founder and Group CRO of Taipei-based crypto exchange XREX, suggested a step-by-step approach to regulation, with smaller entities adhering to self-supervisory rules formulated by the industry association after registration. For larger entities, he proposed obtaining a permit under the special law and potentially applying for other relevant financial licenses.

Hong Kong digital yuan pilot lacks P2P capabilities

Hong Kong has launched a pilot program for the digital yuan, marking the People’s Bank of China's (PBoC) central bank digital currency’s (CBDC) first major deployment outside mainland China.  This initiative, facilitated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), represents another step forward in the integration of the digital yuan into Hong Kong's financial ecosystem.Photo by bady abbas on UnsplashCross-border transactions rather than P2PAccording to a press release, the HKMA and PBoC are working together to enable Hong Kong users to set up personal e-CNY wallets using just their Hong Kong mobile phone numbers. The faster payment system (FPS) will support these e-CNY wallets, allowing users to top up their wallets through 17 retail banks in the Chinese autonomous territory. However, the e-CNY wallets are primarily designed for cross-border payments between Hong Kong and the mainland, and currently do not support person-to-person transfers within Hong Kong. This pilot aims to facilitate transactions for Hong Kong residents using their digital yuan wallets, marking the first integration of a CBDC through a major central bank. The Digital Currency Institute (DCI) is managing the interoperability infrastructure between the FPS and the digital yuan, with a focus on enhancing cross-border payments, a key objective on the G20 countries' roadmap. More functionality promisedLike blockchain protocols, the digital yuan pilot offers 24/7 payment capabilities. Eddie Yue, the chief executive of the HKMA, stated that the e-CNY application and wallet would gradually gain more functionality as the HKMA and PBoC work to encourage more retail merchants to adopt the system. Yue stated: “By expanding the e-CNY pilot in Hong Kong and leveraging the 24x7 operating hours and real-time transfer advantages of the FPS, users may now top up their e-CNY wallets anytime, anywhere without having to open a Mainland bank account, thereby facilitating merchant payments in the Mainland by Hong Kong residents.” The HKMA and DCI are planning upgrades to the e-CNY wallets through real-name verification, aiming to enable corporate use cases for cross-border trade settlements in the future. Adoption strugglesWith at least 140 countries exploring CBDC pilots, China's digital yuan is among the most advanced. China has been actively promoting its CBDC, even paying monthly salaries in e-CNY to government workers and employees of state-owned enterprises. However, as reported by the South China Morning Post, many recipients are hesitant to use the digital yuan due to privacy concerns and other limitations. China's central bank aims to increase the use of the yuan in Hong Kong, especially in tourist areas. Last June, digital yuan ATMs were installed in the resort city of Sanya in an attempt to target use of the currency by tourists. Although the city of Jinan embarked upon an initiative last year to enable digital yuan payments on its bus system, the currency is not yet widely accepted for public transportation across China.  Meanwhile, Hong Kong is in the second phase of its own CBDC pilot, the e-HKD, and has launched a regulatory sandbox for stablecoins to foster communication between regulators and issuers of fiat-pegged stablecoins in the region.
