Sealminer A1

The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH.

At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications.

The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners.

"This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig.

On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. The company reported a total of 111,966,634 outstanding ordinary shares as of Dec. 31, 2023, including class A and class V ordinary shares.

Additionally, Bitdeer revealed key operational metrics for Q4 2023, including total Bitcoin mined, power usage across its mining data centers, average cost of electricity and miner efficiency.

Bitdeer's shares closed up 2.11% at $6.76 on Nasdaq on Friday, indicating a positive market response to its recent newly developed Bitcoin mining chip. However, trading outside regular hours, going into March 4, have seen the share price peak at $7.52, yet having retraced to $6.9 at the time of writing. That may indicate that investors are not particularly enthralled by the firm’s Q4 2023 results.

Bitdeer emphasizes that the SEAL01 chip is engineered to meet the evolving demands of the cryptocurrency mining industry. As mining activities continue to gain traction and market dynamics evolve, the adaptability of hardware solutions becomes paramount. Bitdeer's strategic emphasis on innovation with the SEAL01 chip aims to pave the way for future advancements in cryptocurrency mining technology, ultimately fostering the growth and sustainability of the industry.

Moreover, Bitdeer asserts that the newly developed chip enables it to optimize efficiency, stability and performance in anticipation of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event slated for April.

Last month, the company’s founder Jihan Wu was installed as CEO, in a move that is understood to better position the company as it transitions to a growth phase.

Indian government claims Binance isn’t tax compliant

According to India’s Finance Ministry, Binance and a number of other virtual asset service providers (VASPs) are not tax-compliant in India. Cases of tax evasion detectedNews of this matter emerged via written answers, published on Dec. 2, provided in response to parliamentary questions which had been put to India’s Finance Minister, Pankaj Chaudhary. The minister confirmed that a “few cases of evasion of Goods and Services Tax (GST) by cryptocurrency exchanges and investors” had been detected. The document goes on to list 17 crypto entities who are currently being investigated on that basis, with Binance being the most well-known among them. Notable Indian exchanges listed include WazirX, CoinDCX and CoinSwitch. Chaudhary included details of cases booked against these exchanges. In Binance’s case, it was required to pay 722 crore Indian rupees, which amounts to around $85.2 million. While Binance doesn’t appear to have incurred penalties, in the case of WazirX, the exchange had an assessed tax shortfall of 40.51 crore Indian rupees ($4.78 million), but after fees and interest, it was provided with a demand for 49.19 crore Indian rupees ($5.8 million). CoinDCX and CoinSwitch were also assessed with a demand for 20.86 crore Indian rupees ($2.46 million) and 19.38 crore Indian rupees ($2.28 million), inclusive of penalties and interest. In the case of WazirX, CoinDCX and CoinSwitch, the exchanges have had to pay an additional 21%, 24% and 37% respectively in fees and interest over and above their original tax liabilities.Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashPrevious tax and regulatory issuesTo date, the Finance Ministry has recovered 122.3 crore rupees ($14.4 million) as part of these investigations. Binance has as yet not paid the funds demanded by the authorities. It emerged in August that India’s Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) had imposed an $86 million tax demand on the company, with Binance contesting the assessment. The global crypto exchange platform had previously paid a $2.5 million fine for having engaged with Indian customers despite not having been approved by the authorities to trade within the country. After a number of months during which it didn’t trade within the Indian market, in August Binance regularized its standing and gained approval to trade. In a request for comment on the matter from Cointelegraph, a Binance representative stated: “We continue to work closely with regulatory authorities and attend necessary hearings to address any concerns and questions. Binance remains responsive and cooperative and is committed to addressing all necessary tax inquiries.” The company recently hired UK-based accounting and business advisory firm Grant Thornton to assist with accounting, tax and audit preparedness. In the case of WazirX, a spokesperson said that “GST law on cryptocurrencies was not clear in India,” and that on this basis, the company found itself being assessed for non-payment of the applicable taxes.

DPK’s landslide win in general election stokes anticipation of spot Bitcoin ETFs approval in Korea

A couple of days have passed since the 22nd general election took place in South Korea, whose results have disappointed President Yoon Seok-yeol and the country's ruling People Power Party (PPP). The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) won the election in a landslide, securing a total of 175 seats out of 300 in the National Assembly.   Now, with the DPK set to continue exerting control over the National Assembly, financial industry insiders are focusing on whether the liberal party will stick to its campaign pledges to ease regulations on cryptocurrencies and related products – most notably, approving investment and trading of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) within the country, according to media outlet Yonhap Infomax. Ever since the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January, interest surrounding such products has intensified among Korean investors. Photo by Alesia Kozik on PexelHowever, the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) has been reluctant to approve such spot ETFs, citing the potential risk of such approval violating the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act. Various pledges to ease crypto regulations The DPK, in response, has introduced several campaign pledges aimed at easing crypto regulations, both to win votes from younger Koreans – especially those in their 20s and 30s who make up a significant portion of crypto investors in the country – and to bolster the local crypto market. Among these pledges was to include virtual asset ETFs in Individual Savings Account (ISA), which would enhance tax breaks for crypto gains. Another notable pledge was to deduct taxes on crypto gains worth up to KRW 50 million (approximately $36,560). Under the current law, only crypto gains within the limit of KRW 2.5 million qualify for the tax deduction. One local crypto insider commented on the outcome of the general election, saying that the industry will need to keep an eye on how the situation surrounding crypto regulations develops, as easing such regulations was one of the key promises the DPK made during the election campaign period.   Still, long way ahead for Korea to approve spot Bitcoin ETFsMeanwhile, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju left a comment yesterday on the X (formerly Twitter) post written by crypto analyst MartyParty, which reads, "South Korea has approved spot Bitcoin ETFs."  Ju pointed out that South Korea still has "a long way to go" when it comes to approving spot Bitcoin ETFs, noting that just because "the Bitcoin-friendly Democratic Party," or the DPK, won the general election doesn't mean that financial regulators have approved such products.
