SBI and Chiliz join forces in fan token offering in Japan

Web3 & Enterprise·May 10, 2024, 7:43 AM

SBI Digital Asset Holdings (SBI DAH) has unveiled a new joint venture with Chiliz, geared towards introducing soccer club fan tokens to Japan.

Bringing a fan engagement token offering to Japan

These tokens, operating under the Socios fan engagement brand, encompass soccer clubs such as Arsenal, AC Milan, Manchester City, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. Both companies outlined to The Block in a joint statement that the purpose of the joint venture is to provide local sports fans in Japan with access to tokens associated with these high profile soccer clubs.

Alongside this collaboration, SBI DAH intends to establish a node on the Chiliz Chain. Notably, over 2 million users have already engaged with the Socios fan tokens, signifying a burgeoning interest in this space.

Rather than depend upon non-fungible tokens Chiliz relies upon fan tokens, representing a distinct category. They're fungible, akin to tracking stocks, facilitating fan engagement through voting, competitions, VIP experiences, merchandise and exclusive offers.

In Japan, private investors traditionally exhibit more active engagement with companies, often receiving incentives such as discount coupons, gift cards, points and memberships. While fan tokens don't confer ownership rights in the clubs, they offer similar avenues for engagement.

Fernando Luis Vázquez Cao, CEO of SBI DAH, highlighted the importance of technology in enhancing community experiences, expressing enthusiasm for collaborating with industry leaders like Chiliz to introduce novel experiences to the Japanese audience. Vázquez Cao stated:

”The partnership between SBI DAH and Chiliz will bring together the best-in-class capabilities of both traditional finance and Web3, leveraging fintech innovations to transform the sports and entertainment experiences for communities.”

The recent transition of the Chiliz blockchain from a Proof of Authority (PoA) to a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) version marks a significant step forward, attracting node operators like Paris Saint Germain and enhancing the network's capabilities. PoSA is a hybrid consensus algorithm that enables faster block times and reduced transaction costs.

Additional partnerships

In addition to its collaboration with Chiliz, SBI DAH boasts a diverse portfolio of blockchain interests, spanning initiatives such as AsiaNext, SBI Digital Markets and crypto custodian Zodia Custody.

Many crypto projects have partnered with the company as a means to gain access to the Japanese market. One of the most recent examples is its partnership with USDC stablecoin issuer Circle.  The objective of that partnership has been to expand the circulation of stablecoins in Japan, but particularly USDC.

Moreover, SBI DAH has made strategic investments in prominent players like Swiss digital asset bank Sygnum, Blockdaemon and the Tangem wallet. SBI Holdings, the parent company of SBI DAH, similarly maintains an extensive involvement in blockchain investments and activities.

In tackling the Japanese market, Chiliz will have to contend with a local competitor in the form of FiNANCiE. It has emerged to fill a similar role, fostering relationships with domestic sports teams, including J-League soccer clubs. By contrast,  Chiliz has provided broader international exposure. International competitors include Sorare and Dapper Labs, which concentrate on NFTs.

Dubai Regulator Suspends BitOasis’ Crypto License

Dubai Regulator Suspends BitOasis’ Crypto LicenseDubai’s pioneering cryptocurrency exchange, BitOasis, has had its operating license suspended by the city’s cryptocurrency regulator for failing to meet key conditions within the required timeframes. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) took enforcement action against BitOasis and initiated a review of the Dubai-based firm.BitOasis was granted a conditional license on April 12, which allowed it to operate on the condition that it met specific requirements within 30 to 60 days. However, the exchange has failed to fulfill these conditions, leading to the suspension of its license. VARA did not disclose the exact nature of the unmet conditions, but it stated that until they are satisfied, BitOasis’ “License for Institutional and Qualified Retail Investors” will remain non-operational.Photo by iridial on UnsplashFirst MVP broker-dealer license holderBitOasis had received the first “minimum viable product operational license” from VARA, enabling it to offer broker-dealer services to qualified institutional and retail investors in Dubai. This license represents a crucial step towards obtaining a full market product (FMP) license, but as of now, no firm has been issued an FMP license by VARA.To become eligible for the FMP license, BitOasis must fulfill the conditions specified in its current license, as outlined by VARA. The regulatory authority has emphasized its commitment to monitoring the situation for compliance remediation.OPNX reprimandThis recent development follows VARA’s reprimand of Su Zhu and Kyle Davies, the co-founders of the now-defunct crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, in April. The duo had operated and promoted their new OPNX crypto exchange in Dubai without the necessary license, catching VARA’s attention.BitOasis addressed the regulatory concerns in a blog post on Tuesday, affirming its collaboration with VARA to meet the remaining conditions for the Operational MVP License. The exchange clarified that the issue with its license does not impact other services provided, such as broker-dealer services for existing retail users. It also took to Twitter on Tuesday to clarify the situation. The company has suspended new user registrations until further notice, presumably as it works towards meeting VARAs licensing requirements.BitOasis stated: “You can continue to use BitOasis with the assurance that your assets are safe, secure, and held at their full value on our platform, and our team will continue to cooperate with the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority and fulfill all post-operational license terms, as well as working towards a full market product license.”The firm referred to the “unique challenges” that are associated with licensing and suggested that it is determined to address them and to “be a leader in the virtual assets sector.”The suspension of BitOasis’ license highlights the stringent regulatory environment in Dubai’s cryptocurrency sector. VARA is demonstrating that it remains committed to enforcing compliance and ensuring that crypto exchanges meet the necessary requirements. BitOasis must rectify the issues and meet the conditions of its license to regain its operational status and proceed towards obtaining the coveted full market product license in the future.

Korea ST Exchange forms partnership with Finhaven to bolster South Korean security token industry

Korea ST Exchange, an enterprise founded by financial experts for the management and support of security tokens, has signed a business deal with Canadian fintech company Finhaven to revitalize the South Korean security token industry, according to an article published by local news outlet Financial News on Wednesday (KST).Photo by Medienstürmer on Unsplash"Through our collaboration with a global company like Finhaven, we expect to expand and revitalize the local security token ecosystem," said Cho Won-dong, CEO of Korea ST Exchange. "We plan to do our best to create a platform where domestic investors can invest in various products more safely and conveniently." Revolutionizing security token managementFounded in 2017, Finhaven is a Canadian government-approved blockchain platform operator that simplifies the process of managing, issuing, trading and tracking security tokens and digital assets. Meanwhile, Korea ST Exchange has been building a platform for security token trading brokerage that prioritizes investor protection based on relevant legal regulations. Fostering global expansionUnder their agreement, Finhaven and Korea ST Exchange vowed to work together on several fronts. This includes supporting Asset Alliance members in their efforts to issue and distribute security tokens overseas. The Asset Alliance is a functional group created by Korea ST Exchange to accelerate the South Korean security token market while monitoring legal developments in the management of such assets. Conversely, the firms will also support overseas operators in the issuance and distribution of security tokens in the South Korean market. They have also agreed to exchange information and networks and converge their respective platforms to distribute security tokens and tokenized securities. The partnership is mainly an active effort on the part of Korea ST Exchange to help holders of promising underlying assets issue and distribute security tokens overseas since legislation for token securities is not yet in place in South Korea. Once this legislation is established, the enterprise then plans to aid foreign issuers in distributing security tokens in South Korea, enabling domestic investors to look into promising global products.
