Metaplanet aspires to acquisition of digital bank

Web3 & Enterprise·July 09, 2025, 8:14 AM

The CEO of Japanese hotel operator turned Bitcoin treasury company, Metaplanet, has suggested that the firm may consider acquiring a digital bank in the future.

Simon Gerovich, the firm’s CEO and a former Goldman Sachs banker, told the Financial Times that part of the second stage of its overall strategy may involve “acquiring a digital bank in Japan and providing digital banking services that are superior to the services which retail now is getting.”

Bitcoin gold rush

Gerovich explained that phase one of Metaplanet’s plan involves participating in what he considers to be “a bitcoin gold rush.” He added:

“We need to accumulate as much bitcoin as we can . . . to get to a point where we’ve reached escape velocity and it just makes it very difficult for others to catch up.”

Other firms are jumping on the bandwagon, as within a very short timeframe, 140 companies around the world have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy.

Metaplanet currently weighs in as the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally. Right now, the company holds 15,555 BTC. Its target is a holding of 210,000 BTC, which equates to around 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Based on current pricing, such a holding would be worth in the region of $23 billion.

Acquiring cash-generating businesses

Once the company has accomplished its Bitcoin accumulation goals, it plans to move on to phase two, acquiring cash-generating businesses while leveraging its Bitcoin holdings in order to do so. Using Bitcoin as collateral, Gerovich said that Metaplanet will “get cash that we can use to buy profitable businesses.”

While inroads are being made with regard to the acceptance of Bitcoin as a corporate reserve asset, it is earlier days still for its acceptance as collateral. Last month, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in the United States, ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, key government-sponsored players in the American mortgage market, to explore the treatment of Bitcoin as eligible collateral for mortgages.

Standard Chartered and crypto exchange OKX launched a pilot program earlier this year geared towards the use of crypto for collateral purposes. Gerovich talks in terms of Metaplanet’s phase two plan playing out at a time “when bitcoin, like securities or government bonds, can be deposited with banks and then they’ll provide very attractive financing against that asset.”

The Metaplanet CEO stated that he expects the Bitcoin accumulation phase of the plan to play out over a period of between four and six years. The Tokyo-listed firm started accumulating Bitcoin in 2024.

Some market participants are backing Metaplanet’s strategy with their own money. Global investment management firm Capital Group recently became Metaplanet’s second-largest investor.

Bitcoin treasury critics

However, the emergence of Bitcoin treasury firms has also drawn quite a few detractors. Some critics point out that many of these companies have a negative operating income. Market analyst Caleb Franzen asserted that even after buying Bitcoin, they’re still junk companies. Others point out that too many firms have jumped on the Bitcoin treasury bandwagon, making the prospect no longer attractive.

Fakhul Miah, managing director of GoMining Institutional, is also concerned about copycats. He told Cointelegraph that ”if these smaller firms crash, we could see a ripple effect that hurts Bitcoin’s image.”

Crypto Influencer Arrested in Hong Kong Over JPEX Association

Crypto Influencer Arrested in Hong Kong Over JPEX AssociationHong Kong police have taken prominent social media influencer and former lawyer Joseph Lam into custody. Known as “Jolamchok” on Instagram, Lam has been arrested due to his connection with the troubled cryptocurrency exchange, JPEX.According to a report from the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Monday, law enforcement officials conducted a search of his office, where they seized various items of potential evidence, including a plastic bag containing banknotes.Photo by niu niu on UnsplashCelebrity promotionThe Hong Kong regulator, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), recently issued a warning squarely pointing fingers at JPEX for actively enlisting online celebrities like Joseph Lam and over-the-counter (OTC) money changers to promote the platform’s services and products to the Hong Kong public. Hong Kong police are understood to have searched the offices of local OTC exchange service Coingaroo. That action is suspected to be related to the issues that have befallen JPEX.An unverified report suggests that Lam, who is also known as Lin Zuo, may have presented questionable investment “schemes” to a cryptocurrency investment chat group. One of the reported victims was allegedly persuaded to invest 100,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately $12,800) in cryptocurrencies. In one instance, Lam made claims within the group, stating that people were relentlessly pursuing him for payments and that the amount of money involved was five times higher than usual.“Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”On September 17, the day before his arrest, Lam shared a news article on his Instagram account, suggesting that he had not been negatively affected by the JPEX investigations. The caption read, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”Following this development, Lam visited the police alongside his legal representatives to provide the necessary information regarding his involvement with JPEX. In a related development, another crypto influencer, Chen Yi, is understood to have been arrested. Yi is suspected of conspiracy to commit fraud.Liquidity crisisJPEX has publicly attributed its liquidity crisis to regulatory pressures and “third-party market makers.” In response, the exchange increased withdrawal fees and suspended certain operations. They have, however, promised to restore liquidity from third-party market makers promptly and gradually return withdrawal fees to normal levels, with details to follow after negotiations.JPEX maintains that it was being treated unfairly. The exchange also said that it would freeze new trades while existing trades would continue to be active until completion. This arrest and the ongoing issues surrounding JPEX come amid wider concerns in the cryptocurrency sector. A recent report from Bitfinex indicated that capital outflows from the crypto markets amounted to a staggering $55 billion in August alone. This substantial outflow has not only impacted Bitcoin but has also affected the liquidity of Ether and stablecoins, underlining the broader challenges faced by the crypto sector. As the investigation into Joseph Lam’s involvement with JPEX continues, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the ongoing troubles facing the cryptocurrency exchange and the broader crypto ecosystem in Hong Kong and beyond.

Report: Can Bitcoin Replace Gold As a Safe Asset?

Report: Can Bitcoin Replace Gold As a Safe Asset? In light of the substantial increase in Bitcoin (BTC) prices this year, a report from KB Financial Group in South Korea examined the potential for BTC to replace gold as a safe asset.©Pexels/Michael SteinbergThe study delves into the factors behind the recent BTC price surge and emphasizes the need for caution when considering BTC as an alternative to traditional safe assets.3 drivers behind BTC surgeFrom January 1 to March 31 this year, BTC experienced an impressive return of 71%. This surge can be attributed to three main factors: an anticipated increase in liquidity due to market expectations of unchanged or falling interest rates; central banks supplying liquidity to mitigate risks in the traditional banking system; and concerns over the potential delisting of cryptocurrencies should the US court’s decision on the Ripple-SEC case classify XRP, Ripple’s native token, as securities, prompting investors to shift their focus to BTC.The report suggests that the current BTC boom is more likely a result of short-term arbitrages and social conformity, given the greater information asymmetry in the crypto market, which lacks the disclosure system present in traditional stock markets.Persisting risk factorsLast month, blockchain tracker Whale Alert spotted a transfer of 11,125 BTC from an anonymous address to Binance. The primary reason for moving assets from a private address to an exchange address is to sell them, indicating that investors should keep a watchful eye on Bitcoin trading volumes, particularly for any signs of large sell-offs.Data from the crypto data analysis platform Glassnode revealed that the percentage of the BTC supply that was active over a year ago reached an all-time high of 68% in late March. Historically, such an increase has been associated with falling BTC prices. This year, the BTC supply is set to grow due to the US government’s liquidation of seized BTC. As detailed in a March 31 Cointelegraph article, the US government seized 51,352 BTC in a case related to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the online black market Silk Road. The government has already sold 9,861 BTC, with the remaining amount expected to be liquidated in four additional portions throughout the year.Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, has been struggling to find banks in the US to store client funds after crypto-friendly banks Silvergate and Signature closed their doors.Need for cautionAlthough various media sources often portray BTC as a safe asset, the report advises caution in accepting these claims. Although some liken BTC to “digital gold,” the two assets share little in common beyond their finite and scarce nature. In fact, gold and BTC diverge significantly in terms of social consensus, intrinsic value, price volatility, and investor protection.Gold serves as a highly liquid asset with applications in both jewelry and industrial goods, in addition to its role as an investment vehicle. In contrast, BTC’s intrinsic value is still debatable. The price volatility of BTC is also a concern, as evidenced by its 71% spike in the first quarter of 2023, compared to gold’s modest 8% increase. Additionally, gold investment products are regulated by law, whereas BTC is not. The report thus recommends treating BTC as a high-risk product and incorporating it into a diverse investment portfolio. It is worth noting that since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crypto market has demonstrated a stronger correlation with the global stock market in response to negative signals. This trend can be partially attributed to the growing presence of institutional investors in the crypto market, who often sell risky assets first to secure liquidity in the face of unexpected shocks.
