Metaplanet aspires to acquisition of digital bank

Web3 & Enterprise·July 09, 2025, 8:14 AM

The CEO of Japanese hotel operator turned Bitcoin treasury company, Metaplanet, has suggested that the firm may consider acquiring a digital bank in the future.

Simon Gerovich, the firm’s CEO and a former Goldman Sachs banker, told the Financial Times that part of the second stage of its overall strategy may involve “acquiring a digital bank in Japan and providing digital banking services that are superior to the services which retail now is getting.”

Bitcoin gold rush

Gerovich explained that phase one of Metaplanet’s plan involves participating in what he considers to be “a bitcoin gold rush.” He added:

“We need to accumulate as much bitcoin as we can . . . to get to a point where we’ve reached escape velocity and it just makes it very difficult for others to catch up.”

Other firms are jumping on the bandwagon, as within a very short timeframe, 140 companies around the world have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy.

Metaplanet currently weighs in as the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally. Right now, the company holds 15,555 BTC. Its target is a holding of 210,000 BTC, which equates to around 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Based on current pricing, such a holding would be worth in the region of $23 billion.

Acquiring cash-generating businesses

Once the company has accomplished its Bitcoin accumulation goals, it plans to move on to phase two, acquiring cash-generating businesses while leveraging its Bitcoin holdings in order to do so. Using Bitcoin as collateral, Gerovich said that Metaplanet will “get cash that we can use to buy profitable businesses.”

While inroads are being made with regard to the acceptance of Bitcoin as a corporate reserve asset, it is earlier days still for its acceptance as collateral. Last month, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in the United States, ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, key government-sponsored players in the American mortgage market, to explore the treatment of Bitcoin as eligible collateral for mortgages.

Standard Chartered and crypto exchange OKX launched a pilot program earlier this year geared towards the use of crypto for collateral purposes. Gerovich talks in terms of Metaplanet’s phase two plan playing out at a time “when bitcoin, like securities or government bonds, can be deposited with banks and then they’ll provide very attractive financing against that asset.”

The Metaplanet CEO stated that he expects the Bitcoin accumulation phase of the plan to play out over a period of between four and six years. The Tokyo-listed firm started accumulating Bitcoin in 2024.

Some market participants are backing Metaplanet’s strategy with their own money. Global investment management firm Capital Group recently became Metaplanet’s second-largest investor.

Bitcoin treasury critics

However, the emergence of Bitcoin treasury firms has also drawn quite a few detractors. Some critics point out that many of these companies have a negative operating income. Market analyst Caleb Franzen asserted that even after buying Bitcoin, they’re still junk companies. Others point out that too many firms have jumped on the Bitcoin treasury bandwagon, making the prospect no longer attractive.

Fakhul Miah, managing director of GoMining Institutional, is also concerned about copycats. He told Cointelegraph that ”if these smaller firms crash, we could see a ripple effect that hurts Bitcoin’s image.”

Bitget Achieves 20M Users With Wallet Integration Driving Trading Volume

Bitget Achieves 20M Users With Wallet Integration Driving Trading VolumeSeychelles-based cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, Bitget, has experienced remarkable growth in the first half of 2023 surpassing 20 million users, driven by the successful integration of its recently acquired self-custodial wallet service, now renamed Bitget Wallet.Photo by Mike Hindle on UnsplashTop four exchangeThe wallet integration has propelled Bitget into the ranks of the four largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume.According to a second-quarter report by Beijing-headquartered crypto research firm TokenInsight, the top four exchanges collectively account for 85% of the total market trading volume. Binance dominates the market with a 52% share, followed by OKX (15.13%), Bybit (10.6%), and Bitget (8.1%), securing its position among the industry’s leading players.$60 billion spot trading volumeBitget’s Q2 report, released on July 18, revealed that the platform’s spot trading volume surpassed $60 billion, with futures trading reaching a staggering $606 billion. Notably, research by blockchain analytics firm Nansen showcased Bitget as the only exchange to witness an increase in futures trading volumes in the six months following the collapse of FTX.The exchange attributes part of its impressive Q2 performance to the introduction of copy trading, a feature enabling users to emulate the trading strategies of select traders. This innovation proved highly successful, attracting 29,700 new elite traders and 169,800 followers, generating $33 million in profits by mid-2023.Bitget, aligning with leading exchanges like Binance, has released its proof-of-reserves to assure users that it maintains reserves exceeding 100% of all assets on the platform, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether, Tether, and USD Coin. At the time of publication, the exchange’s current reserve ratio, calculated by dividing the platform’s assets by users’ assets, stood at an impressive 223%. According to that data, the crypto platform is claiming a debt-free status for the business.Regional expansionAs part of its expansion strategy, Bitget has obtained virtual asset service provider registration in Poland and Lithuania in 2023, solidifying its presence in Europe. Additionally, the exchange has announced plans to establish a hub for its operations in that region.Last week, it announced that it was also targeting the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as part of its expansion plans. To support that effort, it has opened an office in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and hired 60 employees with plans on hiring up to 60 more over the course of the next two years.Crypto loans have been an area that has seen major failures within the sector over the last couple of years. However, this isn’t holding Bitget back from getting involved. Earlier this month, it announced the launch of its crypto loans product, which is aimed at market participants who are seeking alternative funding solutions, backed by digital assets. With Bitget’s rebranding efforts following the BitKeep acquisition and its exceptional growth in user numbers and trading volumes, the exchange is making a concerted effort to position itself so as to effect a global expansion strategy. As the market evolves further, it will be interesting to see how the crypto trading market settles, given that there are now a number of firms in the space actively vying for that business.

Chinese food company adds Bitcoin to balance sheet

DDC Enterprise, a Chinese company headquartered in Hong Kong and listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), has become the latest corporation to add Bitcoin (BTC) to its balance sheet.Photo by Michael Förtsch on UnsplashInitial 21 BTC purchaseThe plant-based food products company which operates under the “DayDayCook” brand published a press release via Business Wire last Friday announcing its first Bitcoin purchase. It’s likely that there was a symbolic element to the firm’s first Bitcoin purchase, given that it bought 21 BTC while Bitcoin has a supply cap of 21 million BTC. The company completed the transaction via share exchange with an investor group, issuing 254,333 class A ordinary shares while acquiring the 21 BTC at a market price of $2,283,667. DDC outlined that it plans to make two further purchases over the coming days of 79 BTC, at which point the firm’s corporate treasury will hold 100 BTC. Targeting 5,000 BTCThe company has a much more ambitious Bitcoin accumulation plan, however. Over the course of the next three years, it is targeting the establishment of a Bitcoin treasury holding 5,000 BTC. At current market pricing, that would amount to a Bitcoin treasury of around half a billion dollars in value. In the near term, the firm is targeting the acquisition of 500 BTC by the end of this year. DDC Founder and CEO Norma Chu described the development as a “pivotal moment” in the company’s evolution. She said that this plan reflects DDC’s “confidence in Bitcoin as a store of value,” while demonstrating the firm’s interest in pursuing innovation. “We are fully committed to ensuring the success of this strategy, which aligns with our vision to drive long-term value for our shareholders,” she added. Web3 innovationAccording to a DDC website, the company has innovative plans that go beyond just a Bitcoin treasury. It plans to deepen community engagement through the use of NFT loyalty programs and immersive Web3 experiences. It also plans to leverage blockchain transparency in its efforts to build greater community engagement. The website sets out a vision whereby DDC can blend its culinary heritage with next-generation technologies.  The company suggests that real-world asset (RWA) tokenization has the potential to revolutionize consumer engagement, while offering the possibility of enabling fractional ownership of product lines. It has set out a roadmap where it outlines having established a digital platform in 2012, going on to engage in content creation and content commerce over the course of a decade.  The firm carried out an initial public offering (IPO) in 2023 and from 2025 onwards, aside from its Bitcoin treasury strategy, it plans to integrate RWA tokenization and Web3 technology into its business, while also adopting AI technologies to enhance supply chain efficiency. DDC is one of a growing list of corporations to adopt Bitcoin as a strategic asset over the course of the past 18 months. Earlier this month, another Chinese company, Nasdaq-listed Jiuzi Holdings, an electric vehicle (EV) retailer, announced that it had adopted a plan to acquire 1,000 BTC. Hong Kong-listed game developer Boyaa Interactive holds 3,350 BTC.

Shinhan Bank and SCB TechX Succeed in Stablecoin Remittance Pilot

Shinhan Bank and SCB TechX Succeed in Stablecoin Remittance PilotSouth Korean banking institution Shinhan Bank, Thai Siam Commercial Bank’s tech arm SCB TechX, and a Taiwanese financial institution recently announced the successful completion of a proof-of-concept (PoC) pilot of stablecoin remittances. The PoC was built on the hashgraph consensus-based public ledger, Hedera. Hashgraph consensus is a technology that provides an alternative to the more commonly used blockchain consensus mechanisms.Photo by Lea L on UnsplashThree currenciesThe pilot test was conducted to assess the feasibility and functionality of a system involving real-time settlement and real-time foreign exchange (FX) rate integration. The test was successful in implementing these capabilities for three currencies: the Thai Baht (THB), the New Taiwan dollar (NTD), and the South Korean won (KRW). Since the PoC is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), EVM-based stablecoins should be able to join the PoC framework without significant modifications.More efficient and affordableIn November 2021, Shinhan Bank developed this PoC on the Hedera network in collaboration with an international bank outside Korea, employing stablecoins for cross-border remittances. The success of the subsequent pilot test this year represents a major achievement in the pursuit of more efficient and affordable cross-border payments, especially given that the financial industry has been increasingly recognizing the transformative possibilities of blockchain and distributed ledger technology. These banks expect that this stablecoin solution will allow individuals and organizations to conduct transactions in locally denominated stablecoins, benefiting from remarkably low fees.Kim Byung-hee, Chief of the Blockchain Division at Shinhan Bank, said, “The successful completion of this second PoC marks an important step forward in our efforts to make cross-border payments faster, cheaper, and more accessible to people around the world.”SCB TechX’s CEO Trirat Suwanprateeb echoed this sentiment, stating that this endeavor can help “increase financial inclusion and improve access to financial services for individuals and businesses in underserved communities.”
