Animoca Brands’ Japanese market expansion via strategic partnership

Animoca Brands Japan, in collaboration with Animoca’s subsidiary KLKTN, a digital experience label, has unveiled a strategic partnership with Cool Cats Group, marking a significant move into the Japanese anime market within the Web3 space.

Conquering the Japanese anime market

As part of this strategic venture which was announced on Tuesday, Animoca Brands Japan has acquired equity shares in Cool Cats Group. Cool Cats is a U.S.-headquartered global character brand. It entails Cool Cats and Cool Pets NFT collections, notable for their distinctive and colorful cat designs.

In addition to this, Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN, has acquired NFTs from all three of Cool Cats’ collections on the secondary market. Notably, this NFT purchase took place through San FranTokyo, KLKTN’s virtual “decentralized city,” which is known for its focus on licensed anime and Web3 intellectual property.

Daisuke Iwase, CEO of Animoca Brands Japan, highlighted that the partnership goes beyond business growth. According to Iwase, it is about cultural exchange, understanding and delving into what makes Japan’s digital and artistic realm globally appealing. He emphasized their commitment to creating more opportunities for the Cool Cats IP’s growth through Animoca Brands Japan and San FranTokyo.

 

Accessing Web3 intellectual property

Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, telling The Block that it revolves around building Web3 intellectual property. He emphasized the company’s excitement about collaborating with an iconic Web3 IP holder like Cool Cats to explore the potential of Web3 products and traditional Japanese media products, including manga, to engage the community.

The partnership also introduced several strategic initiatives that are set to roll out. One of the key initiatives is the creation of a “Cool Cats Manga,” which will blend the world of Cool Cats with Japan’s renowned manga tradition. This manga will be crafted by a Japanese manga artist, promising a unique fusion of creative elements.

 

Japanese Cool Cats brand expansion

Another significant aspect of the partnership involves expanding the Cool Cats brand within Japan. Animoca Japan and San FranTokyo will work collaboratively to promote the Cool Cats IP through various channels. They are also committed to establishing new connections for Cool Cats with prominent organizations in the Japanese entertainment and intellectual property sectors, enhancing the brand’s presence in the country.

The narrative of the Cool Cats IP will be seamlessly integrated into the virtual city of San FranTokyo. This initiative will encompass interactive e-figurine drops and align with the marketing efforts of other iconic Japanese IPs, creating a vibrant digital ecosystem within the city.

While this is slightly less than China’s $86.4 billion, it’s a noteworthy achievement considering Hong Kong’s smaller population and the challenges facing the crypto industry.The close relationship between China and Hong Kong has led some industry commentators to speculate that Hong Kong’s rise as a crypto hub could indicate a shift in China’s stance on digital assets.The crypto-friendly environment in Hong Kong has not gone unnoticed. Merton Lam of Crypto HK, an OTC digital asset trading center in the city, notes that cryptocurrencies have become an integral part of investment portfolios for banks, private equity firms, and high-net-worth individuals in the region. Even Chinese state-owned businesses are launching cryptocurrency-focused investment funds.Hong Kong cornering institutional tradeWhat sets Hong Kong apart in the crypto landscape is its proficiency in large institutional crypto transactions, with 46.8% of its annual crypto trades exceeding $10 million. In contrast, retail trades under $10,000 accounted for just 4% of the city’s crypto volume, slightly below the global average of 4.7%. This institutional dominance distinguishes Hong Kong from other Asian regions.For comparison, South Korea heavily relies on retail trading on centralized exchanges, while Japan maintains a transaction breakdown that aligns closely with global trends, balancing centralized exchanges with DeFi protocols.A cautionary noteHowever, Dave Chapman of OSL Digital Securities offers a note of caution, suggesting that Hong Kong’s promotion as a crypto hub might be more exploratory, aimed at gaining a better understanding of digital assets without significantly loosening mainland policies.Despite the uncertainties, Markus Thielen, Head of Research and Strategy at Singapore’s Matrixport, believes that Hong Kong is acting as a “testing ground” for broader cryptocurrency adoption in China. The city’s unique position makes it an attractive destination for the crypto asset management industry, setting it apart from other jurisdictions that often view crypto firms as service providers rather than end-users.Hong Kong’s progress is particularly noteworthy when considering the broader context of East Asia’s crypto market. Chainalysis analysis reveals that East Asia’s share of crypto transaction value dropped from around 30% in 2019 to less than 10% by the second quarter of 2022 due to China’s crypto bans. Hong Kong’s recent surge could potentially act as a “tailwind” to reignite crypto activity in the region.The evolving relationship between the mainland and the autonomous territory of Hong Kong may hold the key to understanding the future of cryptocurrency in the region.

Marking its 10th anniversary, Coinone’s cumulative trading volume hits $339B

Coinone, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, unveiled an infographic on Monday that captures the company’s decade-long history, according to local newspaper Busan Ilbo. Founded on Feb. 20, 2014, the exchange platform commemorates its 10th anniversary this year. As of Feb. 20 of this year, Coinone’s cumulative trading volume stands at KRW 452 trillion ($339.4 billion) with a total of 213 employees. As compensation for his collaboration with the project, Luthra received Reel Token (REELT), the project’s utility token.Bitget alleged market manipulationUpon the listing of REELT tokens, Luthra reportedly sold 1.3 million tokens on Bitget. In response, Bitget claims it faced a manipulative attack orchestrated by a group of traders attempting to profit from market manipulation immediately after the token’s listing. This allegedly caused a significant drop in the token’s price, prompting Bitget’s decision to freeze Luthra’s account.Bitget states that it contacted Luthra seeking an explanation for the suspicious trading behavior. Luthra acknowledged the token sale but failed to provide satisfactory reasons for his actions, according to Bitget’s version of events. The exchange maintains that user protection is its foremost priority and that it takes swift action against illegal or fraudulent behaviors.$16 million damages claimLuthra refutes the allegations, asserting his innocence and citing alleged approval from Reel Star’s Co-Founder Navdeep Sharma for his token sale plans. He seeks a substantial $16 million in damages, in addition to the frozen funds. Luthra claims that Bitget unjustly deprived him of his tokens, asserting his status as a fully KYCed user entitled to access his holdings.In the aftermath of the incident, Bitget conducted an investigation and offered a compensation plan for affected clients. Gracy Chen, Bitget’s Managing Director, emphasized the exchange’s commitment to user protection and its actions against illicit activities on its platform. Addressing the matter on Twitter, Chen didn’t hold back in her commentary on Luthra, stating that he “has a history of fraudulent activities,” which she says were exposed by crypto journalist CoffeeZilla.The legal dispute has ignited debates within the crypto community. Supporters of Luthra contend that his case underscores broader issues faced by users of centralized exchanges, shedding light on the need for improved user rights and protection. On the other hand, some argue that Bitget acted appropriately to safeguard its users and the market integrity.CZ brought into the disputeThe legal battle has attracted attention from influential figures in the crypto industry. Against a backdrop of a very public airing of the dispute on Twitter, in a recent tweet Luthra invited Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the CEO of Binance, to respond to Luthra’s claim that Bitget spreads rumors about other exchanges. CZ was having none of it, writing: “You should talk to them, right? We are not a regulator for other exchanges.”The case highlights the intricate challenges surrounding market manipulation and token listings within the crypto space. As it unfolds, the outcome could potentially set a precedent for similar situations involving token listings, market manipulation, and user protection.
