Conquering the Japanese anime market

As part of this strategic venture which was announced on Tuesday, Animoca Brands Japan has acquired equity shares in Cool Cats Group. Cool Cats is a U.S.-headquartered global character brand. It entails Cool Cats and Cool Pets NFT collections, notable for their distinctive and colorful cat designs.

In addition to this, Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN, has acquired NFTs from all three of Cool Cats’ collections on the secondary market. Notably, this NFT purchase took place through San FranTokyo, KLKTN’s virtual “decentralized city,” which is known for its focus on licensed anime and Web3 intellectual property.

Daisuke Iwase, CEO of Animoca Brands Japan, highlighted that the partnership goes beyond business growth. According to Iwase, it is about cultural exchange, understanding and delving into what makes Japan’s digital and artistic realm globally appealing. He emphasized their commitment to creating more opportunities for the Cool Cats IP’s growth through Animoca Brands Japan and San FranTokyo.

Accessing Web3 intellectual property

Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, telling The Block that it revolves around building Web3 intellectual property. He emphasized the company’s excitement about collaborating with an iconic Web3 IP holder like Cool Cats to explore the potential of Web3 products and traditional Japanese media products, including manga, to engage the community.

The partnership also introduced several strategic initiatives that are set to roll out. One of the key initiatives is the creation of a “Cool Cats Manga,” which will blend the world of Cool Cats with Japan’s renowned manga tradition. This manga will be crafted by a Japanese manga artist, promising a unique fusion of creative elements.

Japanese Cool Cats brand expansion

Another significant aspect of the partnership involves expanding the Cool Cats brand within Japan. Animoca Japan and San FranTokyo will work collaboratively to promote the Cool Cats IP through various channels. They are also committed to establishing new connections for Cool Cats with prominent organizations in the Japanese entertainment and intellectual property sectors, enhancing the brand’s presence in the country.

The narrative of the Cool Cats IP will be seamlessly integrated into the virtual city of San FranTokyo. This initiative will encompass interactive e-figurine drops and align with the marketing efforts of other iconic Japanese IPs, creating a vibrant digital ecosystem within the city.

David Taing, Co-Chief Operating Officer of KLKTN, expressed their dedication to Japanese and Web3 IP, emphasizing the importance of forging a path forward in the Web3 space. They are committed to bringing together diverse worlds, styles, ideas, industries and technology to drive collaboration to new heights, shaping the future of web3.

The strategic partnership between Animoca Brands Japan, KLKTN and Cool Cats Group represents a significant step toward embracing Web3 in the Japanese anime market, not just in terms of focusing on business growth but also in aiming to bridge cultures, bringing together the rich traditions of Japanese manga and the innovation of Web3.

Potential positive impact of monetary stimulus in China

Many commentators in the crypto space were pointing to a lowering of interest rates last week by the Federal Reserve in the United States as being a positive development for the pricing of digital assets. However, the introduction of a stimulus package to revive the Chinese economy may also have a role to play. Stimulus packageBloomberg reported on Sept. 24 that People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng had cut a key short-term interest rate. Furthermore, the Bank of China governor plans to implement a reduction in the reserve requirements that are applied to the country’s banks. The Reserve Requirement Ration (RRR) will be cut by 50 basis points, which will mean that $142 billion will be freed up for new lending.  Additionally, a package of measures has been introduced to rejuvenate China’s beleaguered real estate market, lowering the borrowing costs related to $5.3 trillion in mortgages.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashBullish for crypto?Jamie Coutts, chief crypto analyst at financial research platform Real Vision, took to X to comment on the development. Coutts wrote: “The bottom is in for global central bank liquidity for this cycle. Sit back and watch the other CBs fall into line. In a credit-based fiat fractional reserve system, debasement is a feature, not a bug.” Coutts signed off with a “Bitcoin” hashtag, with the inference that the development will have positive implications for Bitcoin. Similarly, market analysts at Singaporean crypto-asset trading firm QCP Capital perceive the move as being bullish for crypto and risk assets more generally. QCP Capital analysts stated: "We believe more easing is coming from the People's Bank of China (PBoC), and they have communicated as much, and combined with the U.S. Federal Reserve joining the global cutting cycle, all major central banks, except Bank of Japan, are now ready to inject more liquidity into the market. The macro space continues to look more and more bullish for risk assets, including crypto."  Taking that consideration further, the QCP Capital analysts suggest that market participants in the crypto space may be caught off guard by a resultant uptick in crypto pricing, stating: "We know how explosive crypto prices can be, and with so many bullish catalysts, we think the next move higher will leave many people surprised and sidelined.” Fed rate cutsMany market commentators were similarly enthused last week following an announcement in the U.S. by Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chairman, of a 50 basis point rate cut, with the suggestion that further cuts may be implemented going forward. However, not all market pundits are of the same view. Some believe that small interest rate cuts occurring in an overall high rates environment won’t move the needle and that it’s only in a zero rates environment where Bitcoin and crypto skyrocket.  Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at the Maelstrom Fund, asserted in his keynote speech at TOKEN2049 in Singapore last week that he wasn’t enthusiastic about rate cuts driving crypto.  “While I think a lot of people are looking forward to a rate cut, meaning that they think the stock market and other things are going to pump up the jam, I think the markets are going to collapse a few days after the Fed’s rates,” he stated. Markets didn’t collapse subsequently although it seems that they are responding to this latest monetary stimulus introduced by China.

Japan mulls unrealized crypto gains tax exemption

Japan mulls unrealized crypto gains tax exemptionJapanese lawmakers are currently in discussions about a proposal that could exempt companies from paying taxes on unrealized cryptocurrency gains.Photo by Joshua Tan on UnsplashReforming aggressive crypto tax policyThe plan is anticipated to be incorporated into the fiscal 2024 tax reform agenda, according to a report published by Nikkei Asia on Wednesday.Up until now, Japan has had some of the most aggressive tax rates where cryptocurrencies are concerned when compared internationally. At the moment, corporations have to pay a 30% tax on crypto holdings regardless of whether they’ve sold those digital assets or not. The policy has been criticized broadly by crypto sector participants in Japan. It is seen as inequitable, considering that Japan taxes profits from stocks at a flat 20%.Corporate tax exemptionThe proposal, currently under deliberation by Japan’s ruling coalition, specifically targets Japanese companies holding digital assets for purposes other than short-term trading. If approved, these firms may be granted an exemption from corporate tax, contingent on mark-to-market valuations at the close of the fiscal year.Mark-to-market valuations involve assessing the fair values of assets with periodic fluctuations, such as cryptocurrencies. This exemption is expected to benefit various entities, including venture capital (VC) firms, non-fungible token (NFT) businesses and other blockchain companies holding cryptocurrencies for payment purposes. Additionally, crypto issuers, who are also crypto holders, would not be subjected to these taxes.Policymakers from the Liberal Democratic Party and the ruling coalition partner Komeito engaged in discussions on Tuesday regarding these potential tax exemptions.Bringing clarity to crypto taxationThis move is part of Japan’s ongoing efforts to bring clarity to crypto taxation. In June, the National Tax Agency clarified that crypto issuers in the country would not be liable to pay capital gains taxes on unrealized gains, fostering a more conducive environment for crypto-related businesses.Japan has been actively reviewing its crypto tax policies since last year, aiming to incentivize companies to stay in the country. This initiative follows the departure of several startups due to heavy tax burdens.Industry reactionWith news of this potential Japanese crypto tax reform breaking, crypto community members haven’t wasted any time in providing their thoughts. Taking to the X social media platform, Sota Watanabe, the founder of the Astar Network multichain dApp hub, wrote:”Good move. This is what I requested multiple times to the government over years. Once this issue is solved this year, all companies, especially big enterprises, can hodl crypto like ASTR much easier. Japan weighs ending tax on some corporate crypto holdings.”Former Goldman Sachs Portfolio Manager and Web3 investor, Steve Lee, said that this is “another big move in Japan that would help enterprises push their crypto business.”The Financial Services Agency (FSA), Japan’s top financial regulator, recently submitted legislation-change requests to the government, seeking alterations to the taxation of domestic crypto firms. Critics argue that the existing rule has impeded innovation in the crypto-asset and blockchain sectors, placing an undue burden on companies. On Oct. 16, major businesses in Japan, through the Japan Association of New Economy (JANE), urged the government to implement crypto tax reforms in 2024. Their appeal emphasizes the potential for reduced tax rates to stimulate growth and increase tax revenue.

Parachain Fork Sees Transition to Enjin Blockchain

Parachain Fork Sees Transition to Enjin BlockchainEnjin, a Singapore-headquartered non-fungible token (NFT) platform, has announced its transition to a new mainnet named Enjin Blockchain, with the goal of further advancing Web3 adoption. As part of this transition, Enjin has forked its Polkadot parachain, Efinity, to the new blockchain. The project made the announcement via a blog post published to its website on Thursday.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashIntegrated functionalityAccording to the team at Enjin, the Enjin Blockchain distinguishes itself from other blockchain solutions by integrating functions such as NFT creation and transfer directly into the foundational code of the blockchain, eliminating the reliance on smart contracts. This integration aims to streamline and simplify the process of creating and transferring NFTs.In addition to this fundamental change, the Enjin Blockchain introduces several new features. One notable feature is “Fuel Tanks,” which enables developers to subsidize user transaction fees, making it more cost-effective for users to interact with the blockchain. Another feature is “Discrete Accounts,” which allows users to engage with blockchain-based projects without the need to download specific wallet software.Fork to Efinity MatrixchainAlongside the transition to the Enjin Blockchain, the team has also forked Efinity, the Polkadot parachain, to the new mainnet. This rebranded version will be known as the Efinity Matrixchain and will facilitate a smooth transition for existing users.Witek Radomski, the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Enjin, emphasized that the launch of the Enjin Blockchain aims to support creativity by making the creation and distribution of NFTs more accessible and affordable. Radomski stated: “Enjin Blockchain makes the creation and mass distribution of NFTs affordable and accessible to everyone. Our aim is nothing short of revolutionizing gaming, ownership, and online identity.”Enjin’s chief financial officer, Oscar Franklin Tan, expressed his belief that NFTs and digital ownership will be pivotal in the future of gaming, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality. Tan emphasized Enjin’s commitment to supporting this next wave of gaming and the resulting “explosion of content.”Enjin believes that it sets itself apart from the competition due to the fact that it’s built on top of the open-source Substrate framework, a mechanism that facilitates the development of customized blockchains that may be run on an entirely autonomous basis.Using this unique approach, Enjin Blockchain doesn’t depend upon the use of smart contracts. Instead, critical functions such as creating, using, and transferring NFTs are integrated directly into the core, foundational blockchain code.NFT lending stabilityIn related news, the stability of NFT lending has been aided by the use of blue-chip collateral. Paraspace, an NFT protocol, recently reported that despite facilitating NFT loans totaling over $280 million, it experienced no bad debt and only 16 NFT liquidations. This success can be attributed to the protocol’s requirement that only blue-chip NFTs can be used as collateral, ensuring the value and stability of the assets involved. As Enjin embraces its new mainnet and the Efinity Matrixchain, the platform positions itself as a key player in the evolving NFT and blockchain landscape. With a focus on accessibility, affordability, and the support of creative endeavors, Enjin aims to drive innovation in gaming, ownership, and online identity.
