Focus on Asia

The announcement, made via a blog post to the company’s website on Tuesday, indicates that the fund will support the development of Web3 startups within the Asian region.

The project’s primary objective is to nurture the growth and advancement of Web3 startups within a crypto and blockchain sector in Asia that continues to progress and evolve. Ninety Eight takes an approach that encompasses both financial backing and strategic guidance for handpicked startups, with a dedicated team working in tandem to provide insights and facilitate access to its extensive network of industry collaborators.

Leveraging ecosystem infrastructure

Ninety Eight maintains that entrepreneurs can harness its infrastructure and draw upon the depth of its ecosystem. One of the key components of that ecosystem is Viction, formerly known as Tomochain.

Viction is a layer-1 blockchain boasting zero-gas transactions and cutting-edge security features. The project claims that Viction creates the ideal conditions for projects to broaden their horizons and enhance their prospects of success.

C98 token

A defining feature of the ecosystem fund is its emphasis on promoting the utility of its native token, C98. Originally conceived as a wallet token, C98 has since transformed into an instrument for propelling Web3 innovation. With its versatile applications, Ninety Eight claims C98 holds the potential to revolutionize the way Web3 applications are conceived, deployed and utilized. Through the ecosystem fund, the company mission is to bolster startups capable of harnessing C98 to craft inventive and impactful solutions.

Ninety Eight has incorporated Arche Fund within its offering, with it assuming the role of fund custodian. It also plays a part in overseeing the fund and closely collaborating with selected startups to unlock their full potential. Arche Fund offers value-added programs while equipping partnering businesses with essential tools, resources and invaluable networks.

By propelling their pioneering vision, we empower our partners to transform their aspirations into reality. CEO Thanh Le articulated the firm’s mission, stating:

“Our path forward is guided by one principle — we are builders backing builders. Thanks to the incredible community that has brought us to where we are today, we are determined to give back. We believe that by supporting talented builders and providing them with the necessary resources, we can drive the adoption of Web3 technologies and shape the future of the decentralized internet.”

The firm previously launched its Vietnam Future Fund earlier this year, with a view towards concentrating on propelling Vietnamese Web3 startups forward.

Prospective startups considering applying for funding from the Ninety Eight ecosystem fund are being encouraged to submit their applications via the Arch Fund’s submission form.

KuCoin CEO: Privacy Not a Key Bitcoin Feature

KuCoin CEO: Privacy Not a Key Bitcoin FeatureJohnny Lyu, the CEO of Seychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, recently shared his perspective on the role of privacy in Bitcoin, maintaining that privacy isn’t the primary feature of the leading digital asset that many believe it to be.Photo by Karolina Grabowska on PexelsUnit of exchange is coreIn an interview with Cointelegraph earlier this week, Lyu expressed his belief that privacy is not the core feature of Bitcoin. He argued that the primary benefit of Bitcoin lies in its function as a unit of exchange, enabling users to hedge against recessions.Lyu drew a connection between the creation of Bitcoin and the 2008 financial crisis, which was triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States. According to him, these events served as the catalyst for the birth of Bitcoin. However, he made it clear that privacy is just one of the features offered by the cryptocurrency.KYC safeguarding customer fundsAddressing concerns about the increasingly stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) checks being implemented by KuCoin, Lyu emphasized the importance of these measures in safeguarding user funds. While some individuals argue that stringent KYC practices compromise privacy, the CEO believes that they enhance security. He explained that KYC procedures protect users’ assets by establishing ownership and enabling asset tracking in the event of theft. As the cryptocurrency industry continues to expand and interact with the physical world, compliance becomes crucial. Lyu expressed his belief that KYC checks are an inevitable and healthy stage in the development cycle of cryptocurrencies. Compliance measures contribute to the industry’s long-term stability and promote user confidence.New restrictionsKuCoin recently announced that starting from July 15, 2023, mandatory KYC checks will be implemented for all new users. This means that without completing the KYC process, new users will be unable to access KuCoin’s products and services. Existing users who have not undergone KYC will still be able to trade but will face restrictions on depositing new funds.Lyu acknowledged that these new KYC restrictions may impact KuCoin’s trading volumes in the short term, as some customers may choose to leave. However, the exchange remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of compliance. The CEO expressed confidence that increased compliance will attract more secure funds and users to the industry, ultimately enhancing the overall security and integrity of the ecosystem.KuCoin currently boasts 27 million users, reflecting a 35% increase compared to the previous year. Following the announcement of the KYC upgrades, the exchange experienced a notable uptick in trading volumes, with figures rising from around $540 million to over $660 million at the time of writing, according to CoinGecko data. The introduction of mandatory KYC checks is seen as a necessary step to enhance user security and protect their assets. Although short-term effects on trading volumes are anticipated, the exchange remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of compliance measures for the entire industry.

Report paints bright picture of India’s Web3 development

India Blockchain Week (IBW) 2024 was held on Dec. 4-5 in Bangalore with venture capital and blockchain advisory firm Hashed Emergent presenting a report at the event, with positive findings with regard to India’s Web3 sector. Titled “India's Web3 Landscape 2024 Report,” the research was presented at IBW 2024 by Hashed Emergent Senior Associate Sharanya Sahai. Photo by Asif Methar on PexelsGlobal frontrunnerThe report claims that the Web3 ecosystem in India has risen to the point where it is a global frontrunner when its progress is measured against Web3 development internationally. A broad network of Web3 startups has emerged, comprising of over 1,000 fledgling businesses.  Those enterprises are being supported in India by global investment, with Indian Web3 businesses having secured funding in excess of $3 billion since 2020. Taking a more recent snapshot, the report outlines that from January to September 2024, Indian Web3 startups received investment funding to the tune of $462 million, an 82% growth compared with the same period last year. These startups are spread across finance, infrastructure and entertainment niches within Web3, although the study found that the bulk of investment funding was placed with Web3 infrastructure businesses.  Home to 12% of Web3 developersHashed Emergent claims that India is home to 12% of the global pool of Web3 developers, second in the rankings on this metric with the greatest number of such developers living in the United States. However, the report maintains that India is in line to surpass the U.S. relative to the Web3 developer metric by 2027. The world’s most populous country also has strength and depth in terms of Web3 founders. It ranks third globally in terms of the overall size of its Web3 founder base. The Hashed Emergent report suggests that Indian founders, accounting for 5.4% of global Web3 startups, are responsible for driving growth in India relative to AI, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and scaling solution projects. Stand-out examples of Indian Web3 enterprises include exchange platforms CoinSwitch, WazirX and CoinDCX, crypto developer integration toolkit provider Transak, blockchain scaling platform Polygon, blockchain-based AI startup Sentient and blockchain protocol Biconomy. Hashed Emergent singled out Sentient and Web3 infrastructure platform Avail Network as projects which have showcased “India’s growing influence in decentralized technologies” in 2024. Adoption challengesThe report points to what Hashed Emergent terms as “an undeniable picture of India’s dominance in global crypto adoption.” That finding falls in line with a report produced by Chainalysis earlier this year, establishing India as the global leader in crypto adoption according to data it compiled.  However, in an opinion piece written by Mithil Thakore recently, an Indian co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Velar, a Bitcoin liquidity protocol, Thakore claims that there is a disconnect between such metrics and the reality of adoption on the ground in India. In the case of the Chainalysis adoption index, the Velar CEO suggests that a “mirage of adoption” is presented, with massive signup numbers not translating into tangible active participation in the market.  While adoption rates are high, he feels that a greater level of active participation is being prevented due to what he terms as an “ambiguous” stance on cryptocurrencies by the Indian government. Regulatory ambiguity puts uncertainty in the minds of investors, holding back the industry’s growth, Thakore claims.
