A trillion yuan market

At the forefront of this endeavor is Zhao Dachun, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile. Dachun emphasized the metaverse’s potential as a trillion-yuan level market. Recognizing its significance, China Mobile has unveiled the first batch of 24 members of the metaverse industry alliance. Among them are renowned companies such as iFlytek, a leading AI company, HTC, a prominent manufacturer of VR goggles, and MGTV, a popular video streaming platform.

The establishment of the alliance serves multiple purposes. It provides a platform for industry partners to engage in discussions and collaboratively shape the future of the metaverse industry. This cooperative effort will contribute to the development of industry standards, facilitating a shared vision for the metaverse ecosystem.

More effective metaverse collaboration

Additionally, the alliance aims to foster resource sharing, encouraging deeper integration and collaboration among its members. By adopting a win-win mindset, the alliance members seek to collectively benefit from the new opportunities that arise within the digital economy.

Further supporting the metaverse vision, Migu, the digital content unit of China Mobile, has taken significant steps by establishing its metaverse headquarters in Xiamen, a city located in the Fujian province of China.

Regional government partnership

In a promising partnership, Migu has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the Xiamen government to spearhead the development of a metaverse within the city. The metaverse, a digital world created through advanced technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, holds great potential for transforming Xiamen into a “high-quality, high-value, modern, and international” city that thrives on digital intelligence.

Migu’s plans extend beyond theoretical concepts, as they outline concrete steps to realize the metaverse vision. Key application scenarios, such as the development of a metaverse version of Gulangyu Island, a renowned tourist destination celebrated for its natural beauty and historical significance, will be a primary focus. By bringing this iconic location to the metaverse, visitors will have the opportunity to experience its charm in a new digital dimension.

Moreover, Migu is dedicated to accelerating research on digital governance within the metaverse. With the metaverse expected to have a profound impact on society, understanding how to effectively manage and regulate this emerging digital landscape becomes paramount. Migu aims to lead the way in establishing best practices and frameworks for responsible and inclusive digital governance.

Through collaborative efforts, the promotion of industry standards, and strategic investments in key application scenarios, China Mobile is likely to play an important role in unlocking the vast potential of the metaverse. In turn, the initiative is likely to fuel the growth and transformation of the digital economy.

Crypto.com unlocks regulated expansion through UK FCA licensing award

Crypto.com unlocks regulated expansion through UK FCA licensing awardSingapore’s Crypto.com has obtained an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom. The approval complements the platform’s existing status as a registered crypto-asset business, a milestone achieved in August 2022.Photo by Robert Tudor on UnsplashSet to expand product offeringIn a press release published to its website on Monday, the company outlined that the EMI license represents a pivotal step for the firm, empowering the exchange to issue and manage electronic money. This expansion goes beyond its initial crypto-asset business focus, which concentrated primarily on compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) regulations. The regulatory nod came after Crypto.com underwent a comprehensive examination of its business and compliance practices, ensuring alignment with the stringent AML and CTF requirements in the UK.With this authorization in hand, Crypto.com is poised to introduce a range of e-money products tailored for the UK market. This move aligns the company with other cryptocurrency firms like Coinbase and Gemini, which have previously secured similar licenses.Notwithstanding that, while some other well-known platforms have struggled with recently introduced rules related to the marketing of crypto products and services in the UK, Crypto.com’s UK subsidiary company, FORIS DAX UK LIMITED, had successfully registered with the FCA in October.Building out global expansionWhile a trend has emerged in 2023 for crypto platforms to expand within regional markets around the world beyond the United States, Crypto.com has been following a global strategy for some time already. Last month, CRO DAX Middle East, a subsidiary company of Crypto.com, secured a license from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai to offer regulated virtual asset services.Earlier this year, Patrick Yoon, General Manager of Crypto.com’s Korean business outlined plans for expansion within that market, including the aspiration to obtain the banking relationship required in order to conduct virtual asset trading business in South Korea.Dutch licensing successEarlier in July, Crypto.com received approval from the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), to extend its cryptocurrency services in the Netherlands. This recognition places Crypto.com among the 36 cryptocurrency-related businesses approved by the Dutch central bank, joining major industry players like Coinbase Europe, eToro and Bitstamp. Notably, this approval followed Binance’s inability to secure registration in the Netherlands, leading to its exit from the country.Expressing enthusiasm about this achievement, Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, emphasized the importance of the UK market for their business. He stated:“The UK has and continues to be a hugely important market for our business and the greater industry. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with a global regulatory leader in the FCA in our collective pursuit of responsible innovation for crypto.”Crypto.com’s global expansion strategy includes regulatory approvals in Singapore, France, Italy, Dubai and Australia. However, in a strategic shift, the platform discontinued its institutional exchange service for professional customers in the United States in June. Citing a decline in demand, this move aligns with the broader market conditions in the U.S., influenced by ongoing legal actions against major exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase.

UXLINK, a Web3 social network headquartered in Singapore, has announced a successful funding round raising $9 million, supported by a mix of private crypto and publicly listed companies including OKX and KuCoin. UXLINK announced details of the funding round in a social media post published to X on March 13. The startup, known for its innovative approach to social networking merging with transactions, has seen its user base grow to 3.5 million users. Among the investors contributing to this round are OKX Ventures, Web3Port Foundation, Cypher Capital, KuCoin Ventures, Gate Labs and Matrixport Ventures. ZhenFund, 7UPDAO, Signum Capital, ECV and GGV Capital were also participants. In a blog post Dora Yue, Founder of OKX Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about UXLINK's concept, stating:"This innovative concept merges social networking and transactions, creating a robust ecosystem where people can fully leverage their digital assets."Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashAcquaintance-based social networkingYue described UXLINK as a game-changer in the field of Web3 social infrastructure. The project differentiates itself by relying on acquaintance social networking. Other Web3 social protocols such as Farcaster, Nostr, Cyberconnect and Lens Protocol are structured around one way follower relationships between key opinion leaders (KOLs) and followers. By contrast UXLINK takes a different approach, building a social network by placing emphasis on the existing social relationships of users with acquaintances. The idea is that real-life acquaintances are established through trust and implicate a much deeper personal connection by comparison with opinion leaders and followers. Speaking to that unique approach, pseudonymous crypto trader and investor Bull Flash stated on X on March 13: “Forget one-sided connections! UXLINK focuses on REAL-WORLD social interactions. Users can connect with each other AND with dApps in real-time through innovative Groups – a game-changer for web3. UXLINK is more than just a platform – it's a MOVEMENT.” Potential for further fundingWhile the exact valuation post-funding remains undisclosed, UXLINK indicated a potential for further funding rounds before its token generation event, signaling continued investor interest in its growth trajectory. With the freshly secured capital, UXLINK aims to introduce the "Social Liquidity Chain," leveraging Optimism and EigenDA technologies to support third-party developments. This initiative is expected to enhance the platform's capabilities and foster a more dynamic user experience. Since its establishment in April 2023, UXLINK has seen rapid adoption, hosting more than 75,000 decentralized groups. The vast majority of its users are located in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and Africa. The platform's unique approach to social finance, facilitated by its Web3 "UXGroups” on Telegram, emphasizes bridging real-world trust dynamics with decentralized applications. In addition to being an investor in the company, last month the OKX Wallet was integrated with UXLINK in an effort to improve user experience, allowing UXLINK users to manage their Web3 assets more efficiently. UXLINK's successful funding round underscores growing investor confidence in the potential of Web3 social networks and belief in their ability to revolutionize traditional social interactions and financial transactions. As the platform continues to expand and innovate, it is positioning itself to make further strides in reshaping the landscape of digital social interactions and finance.
