A trillion yuan market

At the forefront of this endeavor is Zhao Dachun, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile. Dachun emphasized the metaverse’s potential as a trillion-yuan level market. Recognizing its significance, China Mobile has unveiled the first batch of 24 members of the metaverse industry alliance. Among them are renowned companies such as iFlytek, a leading AI company, HTC, a prominent manufacturer of VR goggles, and MGTV, a popular video streaming platform.

The establishment of the alliance serves multiple purposes. It provides a platform for industry partners to engage in discussions and collaboratively shape the future of the metaverse industry. This cooperative effort will contribute to the development of industry standards, facilitating a shared vision for the metaverse ecosystem.

More effective metaverse collaboration

Additionally, the alliance aims to foster resource sharing, encouraging deeper integration and collaboration among its members. By adopting a win-win mindset, the alliance members seek to collectively benefit from the new opportunities that arise within the digital economy.

Further supporting the metaverse vision, Migu, the digital content unit of China Mobile, has taken significant steps by establishing its metaverse headquarters in Xiamen, a city located in the Fujian province of China.

Regional government partnership

In a promising partnership, Migu has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the Xiamen government to spearhead the development of a metaverse within the city. The metaverse, a digital world created through advanced technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, holds great potential for transforming Xiamen into a “high-quality, high-value, modern, and international” city that thrives on digital intelligence.

Migu’s plans extend beyond theoretical concepts, as they outline concrete steps to realize the metaverse vision. Key application scenarios, such as the development of a metaverse version of Gulangyu Island, a renowned tourist destination celebrated for its natural beauty and historical significance, will be a primary focus. By bringing this iconic location to the metaverse, visitors will have the opportunity to experience its charm in a new digital dimension.

Moreover, Migu is dedicated to accelerating research on digital governance within the metaverse. With the metaverse expected to have a profound impact on society, understanding how to effectively manage and regulate this emerging digital landscape becomes paramount. Migu aims to lead the way in establishing best practices and frameworks for responsible and inclusive digital governance.

Through collaborative efforts, the promotion of industry standards, and strategic investments in key application scenarios, China Mobile is likely to play an important role in unlocking the vast potential of the metaverse. In turn, the initiative is likely to fuel the growth and transformation of the digital economy.

India’s CBDC reaches 1 million daily transactions milestone

India’s digital currency transactions have surged, surpassing 1 million daily transactions in December, meeting the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ambitious target set for the end of 2023.Photo by Julian Yu on UnsplashCBDC-based employee paymentsReuters cited three sources familiar with the matter who have revealed that Indian banks played a crucial role in achieving this milestone by disbursing certain employee benefits through the central bank’s digital currency (CBDC), known as the e-rupee. As Indian crypto influencer and YouTuber Sumit Kapoor put it, the transaction level increase “happened because people working in regular banks were encouraged to use digital rupees instead of the normal money for their deposits and benefits.” RPI letter confirms increaseA letter seen by CoinDesk sent by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das, to RBI staff on Dec. 29 confirmed the increased CBDC use, stating that it “exceeded the milestone of 1 million transactions in a day on Dec. 27, 2023.” The e-rupee, developed as a digital counterpart to physical cash, utilizes distributed ledger technology. The RBI initiated the e-rupee pilot in December 2022, initially recording an average of 25,000 daily transactions by the end of October. Despite its integration with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a popular framework for mobile app-based peer-to-peer money transfers, the transaction volume saw a substantial increase last month. Union Bank paymentsAccording to India’s Economic Times, the Union Bank of India is working towards transferring claims related to a number of employee benefits to CBDC wallets rather than the accounts of those salaried employees. Union Bank stated: “With an aim to promote CBDC wallet transactions, banks have been advised to encourage all staff members to transact using the digital currency and ensure 100% staff registration on digital rupee app.” Other banks have been playing their part in the current transaction level surge. This has included major private and state-run lenders such as HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Canara Bank and IDFC First Bank. These institutions disbursed employee benefits directly into CBDC wallets rather than traditional salary accounts, demonstrating a significant shift in adoption patterns. The RBI anticipates that non-financial firms will follow suit, contributing to a further boost in transaction volumes. The user base for the e-rupee has also witnessed steady growth, reaching approximately 4 million users, up from 3 million in December, according to an executive familiar with the pilot. Globally, several countries, including China, France and Ghana, are in the pilot stages of their central bank digital currency (CBDC) projects. Nigeria has rolled out its digital currency, although success has been limited despite offering incentives such as discounts on auto-rickshaw rides. To incentivize e-rupee transactions, Indian banks are offering rewards, aligning with the RBI’s push to enhance transaction volumes. Sharat Chandra, co-founder of the India Blockchain Forum, commended the move to compensate employees using CBDC and suggested expanding adoption incentives to other areas, such as toll tax collections, to further encourage widespread usage. The positive momentum in India’s digital currency landscape reflects a growing trend toward embracing innovative financial technologies.

HTX Hacker Returns Funds

HTX Hacker Returns FundsThe hacker responsible for the nearly 5,000 ETH exploit on the Seychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange HTX (formerly known as Huobi) last month has decided to return the stolen funds.Towards the end of last month, the exchange fell victim to a hack, resulting in a loss estimated at around $8 million. According to on-chain data, the hacker has repatriated the pilfered cryptocurrency, marking a significant development in the aftermath of the cyberattack.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashHacker rewardedThe returned funds were sent back in two separate transactions, one consisting of approximately 4,000 ETH and the other totaling around 1,000 ETH. HTX advisor and Tron Founder, Justin Sun, took to X (formerly Twitter) to officially confirm the recovery. In his statement, Sun revealed that HTX had not only received all the stolen funds as promised by the hacker but had also extended a gesture of goodwill. HTX rewarded the responsible party with a “white hat bonus” amounting to 250 ETH, equivalent to a substantial $400,000.Sun expressed his satisfaction with the hacker’s decision, stating:“We have confirmed that the hacker has fully returned all funds, as promised, and we have also paid the hacker a white hat bonus of 250 ETH. The hacker made the right choice. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone in the industry for their help.”Hacker advisory messageDuring the return of the funds, the hacker conveyed a message on-chain, shedding light on the reason behind this act of restitution. The message read:“Received your message. White hat bonus to0x1Fc8674A51D6b97C968BE384337519CE7003152B. Your system hot wallet private key leak, you should change system hot wallet address and reduce the system hot wallet rate.”HTX, in response to the hacker’s decision to return the funds and in accordance with its commitment, promptly sent the white hat bonus to the specified address. The exchange also requested the hacker to provide a detailed security vulnerability analysis report to the email address htxsafe@htx-inc.com.This request aims to prevent similar incidents in the future, with assurances that the hacker’s privacy will be safeguarded.Justin Sun had confirmed the original hack in September, at the time reassuring the community that HTX had covered all losses arising from the attack and resolved associated issues satisfactorily. While acknowledging the severity of the hack, Sun pointed out that the stolen amount represented a relatively small fraction of the $3 billion in assets held by HTX’s users. To incentivize the return of the funds, HTX had even offered a reward of 5%, which equated to $400,000.However, Sun also emphasized that if the funds had not been returned within a seven-day window, the company would have been compelled to involve law enforcement authorities.Thankfully, it did not come to that, and the cryptocurrency exchange can now move forward with the confidence that its users’ assets are secure. This incident highlights the importance of cooperation and ethical choices within the crypto community, as well as the potential for resolution even in the face of cyberattacks.
