Targeting institutional business

That’s according to a report by Nikkei Asia on Tuesday. It’s believed that the company is positioning itself as a trusted choice for institutional cryptocurrency clients amid the backdrop of digital token price volatility and recent upheavals in the industry. The move will pit the British bank directly against global crypto exchange Binance in key Asian markets, specifically Singapore and Japan.

Rene Michau, the Global Head of Digital Assets at Standard Chartered, emphasized what he considers to be the bank’s unique advantage in the digital asset space, stating:

“As regulated banks, we have a fairly deep infrastructure around risk, conduct compliance, and the activities that go along with crypto assets.”

This solid infrastructure includes established risk frameworks, governance structures, and compliance tools that Standard Chartered is keen to bring into the cryptocurrency sphere, thus making it an attractive option for its clients.

Zodia Custody and Zodia Markets

Standard Chartered’s substantial involvement in the cryptocurrency market is channeled through its majority ownership of Zodia Custody, responsible for safeguarding digital assets, and Zodia Markets, a crypto exchange tailored for institutional clients.

Both entities have been making significant progress in bringing their offerings to market in recent months. Zodia Custody recently launched its services in Singapore, offering a secure solution for financial institutions to manage their crypto holdings. Last month it launched a crypto staking product targeted at institutional clients.

In the same month, Zodia Markets achieved in-principle approval to trade as a broker-dealer in the United Arab Emirates. Zodia Custody has also been successful in the UAE, launching its crypto custodian service in Dubai in May.

Japan and Singapore

This concerted effort by Standard Chartered follows a broader trend where traditional financial institutions, such as DBS Group Holdings in Singapore, are entering the cryptocurrency market, capitalizing on the challenges faced by younger crypto players in proving their credibility.

Binance rebranded its Binance Custody unit as Ceffu and expanded its offerings for corporate customers in Singapore. While Binance asserts the independence of Ceffu, the exact nature of their capital relationship remains undisclosed.

A parallel competition is unfolding in Japan, where Binance Japan has entered the market and Standard Chartered’s Zodia Custody has formed a joint venture with SBI Digital Asset Holdings, targeting institutional clients.

While Standard Chartered has achieved a lot through its crypto-focused subsidiaries in a short space of time, there’s always room for improvement. In June, Hong Kong’s banking regulator singled out Standard Chartered alongside HSBC, appealing to both banking groups to make greater efforts to bank crypto clients within the Chinese autonomous territory, as it looks to compete with Singapore in becoming a regional crypto hub.

The cryptocurrency sector has witnessed increased scrutiny as virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ether have gained popularity. The rise of digital token exchanges, each vying for custody of assets belonging to investors who have embraced cryptocurrencies, has sparked concerns about corporate governance and security.

Giants in traditional finance, like Standard Chartered, are stepping in to offer institutional investors a safer path to engage with virtual assets while leveraging the trust associated with established brands.

KuCoin resolves lawsuit through settlement and New York market exit

KuCoin resolves lawsuit through settlement and New York market exitKuCoin, one of the largest global cryptocurrency exchanges, has arrived at a comprehensive settlement with the authorities in the state of New York in the United States, agreeing to pay $22 million.Photo by Michael Discenza on UnsplashSubstantial fine and refundsThe settlement not only involves a substantial fine but also includes refunds to New York investors and the cessation of trading activities in the state. This resolution comes amidst an assertive effort by New York authorities to shape and regulate the crypto landscape within the state.According to a statement released by New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday, KuCoin will refund a total of $16.7 million to 177,800 New York investors. In addition to the refunds, KuCoin will pay a $5.3 million fine to the state. The settlement addresses allegations that KuCoin failed to register as a securities and commodities broker-dealer while falsely presenting itself as a cryptocurrency exchange.Taking to social media platform X, James wrote:”My office is making crypto platform @kucoincom pay over $22 million for illegally operating in New York. KuCoin is also banned from doing business in our state. Shady cryptocurrency platforms must play by the same set of rules as everyone else or face the consequences.”At the time of taking action against KuCoin in March, James described the lawsuit as “our eighth action to rein in shadowy cryptocurrency platforms that disregard our laws and put New Yorkers at risk.”Lack of registrationKuCoin, based in the Seychelles, allows investors to trade digital assets through its website and app. However, the state of New York argued that KuCoin could not legitimately claim to be an exchange due to its lack of registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the proper designation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as mandated by state law.Ranked as the fourth-largest exchange by spot and derivatives trading volume, KuCoin’s KCS token, a profit-sharing token on the platform, has experienced a 39% increase since the start of the week. At the time of writing, it has a unit price of $13.80. This surge is a consequence of the clarity and finality brought about by the settlement, alongside rising expectations for a U.S. exchange-traded fund (ETF) directly investing in Bitcoin, sparking a broader rally in lesser-known cryptocurrencies over the past month.Potential rumorsKuCoin CEO Johnny Lyu took to the X platform on Tuesday to outline details of the settlement. Interestingly, Lyu included this notification:”I also want to give you a heads-up about potential rumors surfacing in the next few weeks. Please stick to the official website of KuCoin for accurate information.”While the settlement may have brought a certain degree of clarity to the KuCoin platform, Lyu’s comment suggests that there may be other issues about to emerge in the short term. The lawsuit against KuCoin is part of a broader regulatory trend in New York, with Attorney General James having previously filed a similar complaint against CoinEx. Additionally, a settlement in January involving crypto companies Nexo Inc. and Nexo Capital Inc. resulted in a financial resolution of up to $24 million for New York and nine other states.

OKX adds Uniswap in bid to eliminate gas fees

Leading crypto exchange OKX has announced the seamless integration of Uniswap Labs' application programming interface (API) into its decentralized exchange (DEX). The objective of the Uniswap addition is to usher in an era of gas-free trading through its innovative feature called "Snap” for OKX service users. Snap trading modeThe company made the announcement by way of a PR Newswire press release on Feb. 29. OKX asserts that Uniswap is one of the most trusted names in DeFi. As part of the integration, the Snap trading mode will be included as a feature on OKX DEX, with the objective of aggregating Uniswap’s liquidity. The feature operates directly on the OKX DEX interface by way of the UniswapX protocol. UniswapX is an immutable smart contract built with the intention to be fully permissionless. The contract cannot be modified or paused by anyone, including Uniswap Labs. Liquidity providers pay the feeIn explaining away the technology, Jason Lau, the chief innovation officer at OKX told Cointelegraph the mechanics behind the no-fee swaps. Lau unveiled a novel model wherein liquidity providers absorb transaction fees on behalf of users. He asserted that this approach not only enhances convenience but also facilitates cost savings for traders. Lau elaborated further, stating: “By agreeing to a price and signing a transaction off-chain, then settling the transaction on-chain, users end up paying no gas fees because the liquidity providers will pay the fee on the user’s behalf.”Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashGoing beyond trading fee reductionAnticipating a positive response from DeFi enthusiasts, Lau highlighted additional features that go beyond transaction fee savings. These include the elimination of slippages, maximum extractable value (MEV) bot attacks and transaction failures, addressing prevalent concerns within the DeFi space. In tandem with the gas-free trading initiative, OKX announced a seamless integration for its wallet users within the Uniswap interface, courtesy of the Multi-Injected Provider Discovery upgrade on Ethereum, based on Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-6963. This enhancement extends to all browser extension wallets, enabling OKX wallet users to seamlessly connect with Uniswap, facilitating activities such as cryptocurrency swapping, NFT trading, liquidity pool participation and decentralized application (dApp) development. Positioning this integration as a pivotal addition to their ecosystem, Lau reiterated OKX's commitment to broadening user access to diverse on-chain use cases. He expressed enthusiasm for ongoing development initiatives and urged users to actively contribute feedback for further enhancements. The crypto exchange platform achieved further technical progress recently, with the addition of support for atomicals, runes, doginals and stamps to its Web3 wallet. Providing further detail on these additions last month, the company said that they were part of a "first-to-market" initiative relative to Bitcoin NFTs. Alongside technical advancements like these, earlier this week it emerged that the company was further advancing its market expansion strategy, through the launch of OKX TR, its Turkish platform. With OKX pioneering gas-free trading and bolstering user accessibility to decentralized finance, the convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology accelerates, indicating an ongoing transformative shift in the crypto space.
