Mitsui & Co. and Animoca Brands to Drive Web3 Innovation in Japan’s Digital Landscape

Tokyo-based trading and investment company Mitsui & Co. (Mitsui) has announced today a strategic partnership with Hong Kong-based Web3 gaming firm Animoca Brands. This new partnership aims to utilize Mitsui’s extensive business network to foster new ventures that contribute to the distribution and advancement of Web3 technology in Japan. The companies will particularly focus on utilizing blockchain technology to address issues such as wellness and carbon credits.

Mitsui expects this collaboration to strengthen its presence in the blockchain and digital assets space. The goal is to promote the development of a digital society and improve the lives of Mitsui’s customers.

Animoca Brands’ Web3 expertise

Animoca Brands, a well-known company specializing in digital entertainment, blockchain, and gamification, has an impressive portfolio of over 450 Web3 investments. This includes popular non-fungible token (NFT) based online video game Axie Infinity and NFT marketplace OpenSea. Animoca Brands actively promotes digital property rights and the establishment of the open metaverse, a blockchain-based virtual space that ensures permissionless access and user ownership of data.

 

Mitsui’s blockchain initiative

Mitsui also initiated a blockchain-related project through its affiliate Mitsui & Co. Digital Asset Management (MDM). Just last month, MDM launched Alterna, a security token platform that grants retail investors access to previously inaccessible real-world assets (RWAs), such as large-scale real estate properties and infrastructure. To expand the reach of Alterna, MDM has partnered with Sony Bank, a member of the Sony Financial Group, to introduce the platform to the Tokyo-based online bank’s clients.

In response to these regulatory changes, Seychelles-headquartered Bitget has joined KuCoin and OKX, which have recently bolstered their Know Your Customer (KYC) measures to ensure compliance and safeguard their operations.In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Bitget Managing Director Gracy Chen spoke to the utility of KYC measures, stating that KYC is useful in filtering out illegitimate users, particularly those engaged in activities such as money laundering.Photo by Pixabay on PexelsMeeting Asian regulatory requirementsThe Seychelles-based exchange with ties to China and Singapore recently announced updates to its KYC protocols. These changes come in the wake of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) directives, which advise financial institutions, including cryptocurrency exchanges, to implement robust risk management procedures. The MAS has taken a stringent stance, shutting down certain digital payment token service providers to prevent them from facilitating lending and staking activities by retail customers.Starting from October 1, Bitget will require users who have not completed level 1 KYC verification to be restricted from creating new trading orders. This move aims to ensure that users comply with the newly updated guidelines and maintain the integrity of the exchange’s operations.Following industry peersKuCoin and OKX, two other prominent exchanges which, like Bitget, have their corporate headquarters in Seychelles and a strong presence in Asia, have also revamped their KYC policies. While KuCoin initially introduced KYC in 2018, the exchange has strengthened its identity verification procedures, requiring users to upload documents and complete face checks.Furthermore, in July, it announced a mandatory KYC requirement, in line with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. While the mandatory KYC requirement is already in force, the other changes are set to take effect at the end of the month.OKX, on the other hand, has implemented stringent requirements, including the submission of a government-issued ID selfie for users to access all its services. The exchange recently set a deadline for service users to complete KYC.Bitget’s Chen highlighted that its decision to embrace KYC measures was driven by a commitment to serving the market responsibly. She acknowledged that while some users may have reservations about KYC, it is a necessary step to maintain the integrity of the exchange and prevent illicit activities. Speaking at the fringes of the firm’s EmpowerX Summit in Singapore, Chen said:“I’m pretty sure if the user is a financially healthy user, such as, like, if they’re not doing something illegitimate, such as money laundering, they should be pretty comfortable with the KYC process.”Tightening regulationThe tightening of regulations in Asia is not limited to Singapore alone. Japan has also taken steps to enhance anti-money laundering measures related to cryptocurrency transactions, responding to international calls for stricter oversight. Additionally, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) has announced plans to require companies to disclose details about their cryptocurrency holdings, expected values, and related business models in their financial statements, aligning crypto accounting with conventional financial reporting.These regulatory developments signify a broader trend in the region, with cryptocurrency service providers proactively adapting to the changing landscape. As governments and regulatory authorities take steps to address the potential risks associated with cryptocurrencies, exchanges are prioritizing compliance to ensure their longevity and continued growth.

DCJPY will be a Japanese yen-based stablecoin, underpinned by deposits and harnessing blockchain technology to enable instantaneous and seamless transactions. Unlike conventional transfer methods that rely on a bank’s data system, DCJPY circumvents this process via a blockchain network, leading to a reduction in associated costs.Efficient inter-company paymentsThe primary objective of Aozora Bank’s venture is to streamline payments between businesses. The incorporation of blockchain technology offers a secure, transparent, and efficient transaction framework. By adopting this digital currency, companies can experience the advantages of swift settlements while concurrently mitigating the financial outlays tied to traditional banking systems.This consortium recognizes the vast potential of blockchain technology and is seeking to harness its inherent benefits to enhance diverse business operations. With the upcoming launch of DCJPY, the consortium will effectively be promoting the use of blockchain-based digital currencies within Japan and catalyzing innovation within the financial sector. The project has the potential to bring about heightened efficiency, cost reductions, and an overall enhancement in the realm of financial transactions.Banking heavyweightsThis move by Aozora aligns with the global surge in interest and adoption of blockchain technology. The bank operates as a prominent member of a broader consortium, which encompasses a multitude of Japanese corporations. The consortium includes major players in Japanese banking, including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Mizuho Financial Group, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. It has been meeting frequently to assess ways in which it can build a common settlement infrastructure for digital payments.MUFG is already deeply involved in blockchain-based innovation. The banking group has established its very own Progmat blockchain tokenization platform, which includes the Progmat Coin stablecoin platform.Last month, the bank announced a partnership with Binance which will endeavor to investigate the issuance of public blockchain stablecoins based on the Japanese yen. MUFG’s Progmat includes Mizuho as one of its clients on the blockchain platform.Stablecoin regulationThese recent announcements and Aozora Bank’s stablecoin plans follow the passage of a bill by Japan’s parliament earlier this year that restricts stablecoin issuance by non-banking institutions. The bill stipulates that only licensed banks, trust companies, and registered money transfer agents are permitted to issue stablecoins. Furthermore, it establishes a registration system for financial institutions planning to launch such digital assets, accompanied by anti-money laundering measures.A report published by Nikkei Asia earlier this year suggested that three Japanese banks, namely Shikoku Bank, Tokyo Kiraboshi, and Minna Bank, had all expressed the intention to issue stablecoins. In June, Japanese global information technology solutions company Fujitsu announced that it intended to launch a blockchain-based platform in conjunction with the Asian Development Bank.

Hana Securities Holds Second Event to Promote Security Token VentureHana Securities, the securities arm of South Korean financial holding company Hana Financial Group, is currently holding the second event of its Meta1 project, which aims to bridge future assets with modern finance as part of the company’s security token platform venture.This comes after the first event in April, which was organized in collaboration with the art gallery Print Bakery (PBG), during which it showcased paintings and NFT artwork by PBG exclusive artists Kim Sunwoo and DADAZ.Photo by Zach Key on UnsplashA fusion of NFT art and creative workshopsThe second event, dubbed “Meta1 Art & Play,” is being held in collaboration with PBG again at Airdrop Space in Garosu-gil, southern Seoul, and will continue until September 3. It showcases an art exhibition of 20 works, including new NFT artwork by Kim Sunwoo and DADAZ as well as pieces by collage artist Sunhotan and illustrator Boat. The latter two artists will also teach one-day art workshops for pre-registered guests, and their works will later be issued as NFTs, Hana Securities said.Collaborative pop-ups and diverse eventsIn addition, the event features a pop-up bar jointly operated by Hana Securities and online liquor retailer Dali. Visitors can enjoy a cocktail made with the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Nomad Seoul edition whisky by signing up for Dali and opening a Hana Securities banking account. Johnnie Walker and Dali are participating as sponsors of the event.Visitors who make reservations beforehand will also be eligible to receive a cup of coffee and an NFT made by one of the participating artists. Surprise gifts will also be prepared for 100 guests every day on a first come, first served basis.“We have prepared ‘playable, visual, and enjoyable’ content for visitors to have hands-on engagement in line with the recent trend of experience-based consumption,” said Im Sang-soo, Head of the Wealth Management division at Hana Securities.
