BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract Listings

Web3 & Enterprise·May 08, 2023, 12:08 AM

Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX announced recently that it has added perpetual contracts relative to two additional digital assets.

A perpetual contract is a crypto futures contract without an expiry date. Just like with a more conventional futures contract, a perpetual contract is a derivative product, deriving its value from the underlying crypto asset.

$SUI token

Taking to Twitter, the company outlined that it has added perpetual contracts for the $SUI token. The contracts will be available in $SUI/USD and SUI/USDT pairings. Leverage relative to the contracts is being made available up to a maximum of 50x.

$SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain platform. Sui is a layer one blockchain which launched earlier this week. It’s a smart contract platform maintained via a network of permissionless validators. The blockchain network claims to offer a scalable network with ultra low latency. Such low latency can enable diverse use cases such as retail point of sale payment systems and gaming.

The contract allows users to post bitcoin as collateral, earning or losing in bitcoin as the SUI/USD rate changes. Maximum risk limit is set at 50 bitcoin. Meanwhile maker and taker fees have been set for the product at 0.02% and 0.075% respectively. A base initial margin of 2% applies while base maintenance margin of 1% applies.

$PEPE token

On Wednesday, BitMEX also launched perpetual contract products relative to the $PEPE token at 04:00 UTC. There are two listings, PEPE/USD and PEPE/USDT. Pepe coin is a meme token project, inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme. The origins of the cartoon character stem from the Boy’s Club comic in 2005. It later became an internet meme, and later still it was adopted as a meme within the crypto space.

The token itself was launched in April, sky rocketing to a $502 million market capitalization since then, representing a 2,100% rise in the token’s unit price since its launch.

As in the case of the $SUI token, $PEPE is also available to trade on BitMEX with leverage as high as 50x. In an interview with one crypto news publication, a representative of BitMEX commented on the launch as follows:

“PEPE needs a Perp! Perpetual Contracts are the most traded product in crypto and offer all investors taking a long or short position on tokens with better liquidity and fewer network risks. At BitMEX, we offer Tether-margined and Bitcoin-margined perpetual contracts. We are proud to be the inventor of the Perpetual Swap and have long been a leading trading venue for crypto derivatives, offering uncompromised security, a reliable platform, and deep liquidity — as professional traders deserve.”

Many commentators in the crypto space have repeatedly pointed to the high risks involved with leverage. In this instance 50x leverage is incredibly high risk, making the product suitable only for those traders that fully and thoroughly understand the risk that comes with such leveraged trading.

Dunamu Helps Adolescents Tell the Difference between Blockchain and Bitcoin

Dunamu Helps Adolescents Tell the Difference between Blockchain and BitcoinDunamu, the fintech company operating South Korea’s leading crypto exchange Upbit, announced on Thursday that its digital finance education program designed to help foster talent in digital finance amidst the current era of digitization and fintech has come to an end.Photo by Element5 Digital on UnsplashEmpowering digital finance literacy for the future generationDubbed “Duniverse” — a portmanteau of Dunamu and universe — the program was held from May to July for 4,100 middle school students throughout Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Incheon. The curriculum proved to enhance their understanding and literacy in digital finance.“Digital finance education for adolescents is essential in addressing various social issues, such as preventing financial accidents and income polarization,” said Lee Sirgoo, CEO of Dunamu. The first Duniverse program was held last year, hosting some 4,800 middle school students in vulnerable areas of Gyeonggi Province. Owing to the positive response, this year’s pool has been expanded to over 7,000 first-year middle school students in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Incheon. In the first half of this year alone, a total of 4,120 students from 17 middle schools participated. The program featured lessons on the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as blockchain, NFTs, and metaverse, as well as basic financial knowledge. A total of eight sessions were led by a team of qualified instructors with years of experience in economic education. Dunamu employees also directly contributed to the review process of educational materials, the company said.Success recognized by students and teachers alikeIn a survey conducted by Dunamu targeting 435 participants, 93.1 percent of them expressed high satisfaction, stating that their understanding of digital finance improved. This portrays a meaningful upgrade from the answers of a previous survey conducted before the start of the program, where six out of ten respondents said that they had little knowledge about digital finance. They also reported that they now understand the difference between digital asset ownership and copyrights as well as blockchain and Bitcoin, and show interest when coming across digital finance-related content in the media.School teachers also praised the program for addressing blind spots in financial education and taking a proactive learning approach. “The students were able to learn about big data, ChatGPT, and more, which is especially valuable since such education for teenagers is still lacking. I believe it will help boost their competitiveness in the future job market,” said a teacher from Goam Middle School in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. The teachers also approved of other topics that were covered, such as financial fraud prevention, to help teenagers avoid falling victim to financial scams. Suggestions were also made to expand teacher training courses.Upcoming programThis year’s second Duniverse program will be held from August to December for 2,712 middle school students in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Incheon.Dunamu has continually devoted efforts to boosting social welfare and nurturing young talent. This includes “Dunamu Next Steppers,” a hope fund for young people with multiple debts, along with supporting emerging talents and artists with developmental disabilities in their participation in NFT projects.

Korea to introduce more effective guidelines for crypto listing and delisting

Korea to introduce more effective guidelines for crypto listing and delistingThe South Korean cryptocurrency industry is expected to see standardized guidelines for listing and delisting cryptocurrencies on trading platforms by the first half of next year, according to a report by local news outlet ETnews. This move is a response to the current self-regulatory guidelines among cryptocurrency exchanges, which have been found inadequate in effectively managing the listing and delisting of digital currencies.Photo by Mathew Schwartz on UnsplashA dedicated task forceThe Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) in South Korea has reportedly initiated a task force dedicated to creating standardized rules and regulations for cryptocurrency listing and delisting. This team includes both government officials and experts from the private sector. An official from the FSS noted that the task force is aiming to present the final version of the guidelines to the National Assembly before the implementation of the Virtual Asset User Protection Act in July of next year. Operating under the oversight of the financial regulator, these standardized guidelines are expected to enhance their effectiveness and aid crypto businesses in maintaining self-regulation.Frequent listing and delistingThe decision by the Korean financial authorities to formulate these guidelines was prompted by the frequent listing and delisting of cryptocurrencies on trading platforms, which pose risks and cause confusion for customers. An earlier report from the Financial Services Commission’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) highlighted that the number of tokens listed in the first half of 2023 increased to 169, up from 95 in the first half of 2022, while the number of delisted tokens rose from 78 to 115.The WEMIX controversyThe cycle of listing, delisting, and relisting cryptocurrencies has sparked controversies, with WEMIX serving as a notable example. WEMIX is the native token of blockchain gaming company Wemade’s Wemix blockchain network. In December, WEMIX was collectively delisted by the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), which includes South Korea’s top five crypto exchanges: Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax. The reason cited was Wemade’s breach of disclosure rules regarding token distribution. However, in a turn of events, Coinone relisted WEMIX on its platform in February this year. Following this, DAXA established self-regulatory guidelines concerning the relisting of tokens. Despite these guidelines, Gopax also proceeded to relist WEMIX earlier this month. As a result of this move, DAXA criticized Gopax for not complying with the self-regulatory guidelines. Gopax faced a restriction on its voting rights within the alliance for three months, and a cautionary note was issued against them.An industry insider noted that despite the efforts of DAXA, their self-regulation measures for cryptocurrency trading services, including the listing process, have not been particularly effective. However, the upcoming rules are expected to be more impactful as they will be in line with the forthcoming Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
