BitBunny app offers users Bitcoin rewards for walking

BitBunny, a South Korean mobile app that distributes rewards based on walking activity, now offers rewards in the form of Bitcoin, according to an article by local news outlet TechM on Tuesday (KST).

Unlocking rewards

BitBunny allows users to earn Bitcoin by completing missions like walking, checking daily attendance, inviting other friends to use the app, watching advertisements and participating in quizzes and games.

 

Last Friday, the app added a new feature called "Catch the Bunny," a game where users can earn up to 10,000 points, or “coins”. These coins can either be used as cash when exchanged for vouchers – which can be used at various brands like Starbucks or Burger King – or invested in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Dogecoin. Due to these features, the app surpassed 100,000 users within just three months of release.

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop TalentHaving initially been announced in February, China’s National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center was formally launched on Wednesday. The center is based in China’s capital city of Beijing, and plans to collaborate with existing crypto and blockchain businesses, think tanks that concern themselves with blockchain and digital assets, and local universities in an effort to further advance blockchain technology within China’s borders.Photo by Hanson Lu on UnsplashEnterprise blockchain developmentEncompassed within the National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center lies the Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing. The academy’s leading achievement to date has been its development of the ChainMaker blockchain. The state-sponsored blockchain incorporates clusters of high performance servers of 1,000 units or more, and it claims to achieve a throughput of 240 million transactions per second.The blockchain is being geared towards enterprise use, and the sharing of information between businesses. The ChainMaker project team has also developed an immutable storage mechanism called “Hong”. It’s understood that the team plans to open-source that technology in due course. The storage system is being used by around 80 government departments in Beijing to collect and store data.ChainMaker is collaborating with fifty corporations, with most of them being state-owned entities.Linking up separate networksIn these efforts to advance China’s blockchain sector, the Center is being backed by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. One of its key objectives is to ensure that the research center enables a comprehensive, nation-wide network to link together disparate blockchain systems, including those already built, within China. Furthermore, the Chinese authorities want the Center to support existing industries, serving them by bringing blockchain technology to their operations, and in that way advancing businesses with that added competitive edge.Zheng Zhiming, a leading academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that existing blockchain projects are isolated from each other. Zhiming believes that this is holding them back, impeding their growth. This latest approach through the National Blockchain Technology Center is geared to address that shortcoming.It’s interesting to note that while the Chinese authorities have taken a very hard line in relation to cryptocurrencies, they are very much trying to advance their blockchain sector. Likewise, they are pulling out the stops for China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, the digital yuan or e-CNY.It emerged last week that the Bank of China has partnered with French international banking group BNP Paribas, in an effort to promote further use of the digital yuan among the bank’s corporate clients.A dual strategyMeanwhile in China’s autonomous territory of Hong Kong, the city has been given an implicit mandate from the Chinese central government to open its doors to cryptocurrency-related businesses. Cleverly, the Chinese are covering both eventualities. While they don’t want citizens within mainland China to have access to decentralized cryptocurrencies and dApps, they still don’t want to miss out on any upside that the technology and its innovation may bring.On that basis, Hong Kong has been given the space and freedom to compete for crypto business on a global basis, competing in that respect with other emerging centers such as Singapore and Dubai.

Animoca Brands makes key appointment to drive Japanese market expansion

Animoca Brands Japan, a key subsidiary of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 investor Animoca Brands, has welcomed Kensuke Amo as its Chief Operating Officer (COO) to spearhead the company's growth in Japan. Industry credentialsAmo, a seasoned industry veteran who previously served as the managing executive officer at Japanese bitcoin wallet and exchange service Coincheck, officially assumed his role as COO last Thursday. With a proven track record in launching NFT businesses and steering new crypto asset ventures, Amo played a pivotal role at Coincheck. During his tenure as an executive officer from 2020, he pioneered initiatives such as Japan's first NFT marketplace for crypto asset exchanges and an inaugural initial exchange offering (IEO). In a social media post, Amo stated that in the role, he “will be committed to doing [his] best to contribute [to] Web3 technology [so that it takes] root in society.” In 2022, Amo ascended to the leadership position at Coincheck, where he led the NFT business and metaverse business, heading three distinct web domains. His involvement in the expansion of "The Sandbox" and "Otherside" in Japan, stemming from the partnership between Coincheck and Animoca Brands in 2020, further underscores his influence in the sector.Photo by Richard Tao on UnsplashJapanese market expansionRegulatory headwinds in the United States in 2023 led to the company pivoting and focusing on non-U.S. markets. It became clear later in 2023 that the company had a specific interest in growing its business in Japan when Animoca Brands Japan acquired an equity share in Cool Cats Group, an NFT-related project. That deal also implicated a collaboration with Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN. As Animoca Brands Japan strategically aligns itself within Animoca Brands' larger framework, Kensuke Amo aims to leverage the company's extensive assets and network, including over 400 portfolio companies. His mission involves combining his expertise in business and rule-making within the Japanese Web3 industry to facilitate the integration of Web3 into society. Commenting further on his appointment, Amo expressed his commitment to advancing the Web3 landscape in Japan. He stated: “As a strategic subsidiary of Animoca Brands, Animoca Brands Japan will make the most of its assets and network, including its more than 400 portfolio companies, while combining its knowledge and experience in business and rule-making in the Japanese Web3 industry.” Established in 2021, Animoca Brands Japan has played a crucial role in supporting Japanese intellectual property and content holders in their global Web3 expansion efforts. The company secured an undisclosed investment from Mitsui & Co., one of Japan’s largest trading companies, in June. Daisuke Iwase, the CEO of Animoca Brands Japan, expressed optimism about the collaboration with Kensuke Amo, emphasizing his leadership in the realms of crypto assets, NFTs and the metaverse in Japan. Amo’s industry involvement extends beyond Animoca Brands Japan, as he currently advises the Japan Cryptoasset Business Association (JCBA), Shibuya-ku Startup Ecosystem, Web3 project "OASIS" and real estate information service company LIFULL Co., Ltd. Additionally, he is the author of "Textbook of NFT" and "Non Fungible Me."

Korbit and Shinhan Bank hold seminar to strengthen suspicious crypto transaction reportingKorbit, one of the top five cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, revealed on Monday (local time) that it conducted a seminar in collaboration with Shinhan Bank last month aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of suspicious transaction report (STR) filings.Photo by Nick Fewings on UnsplashEnhancing suspicious transaction reportingThe seminar held at Korbit’s premises was a collaborative forum where experts from both the exchange and Shinhan Bank exchanged insights and engaged in a question-and-answer session. The agenda covered areas such as the writing of STR reports, monitoring based on particular themes and the education of staff members. The gathering featured key participants, including Jin Chang-hwan, Compliance Officer of Korbit, and Yoo Jung-yeol, Head of the Digital Assets Team at Shinhan Bank as well as personnel from both organizations involved in anti-money laundering (AML) initiatives.Focus on complianceEarlier this year, Korbit and Shinhan Bank held a meeting to go over the Financial Intelligence Unit’s (FIU) comprehensive evaluation of virtual asset service providers (VASPs). This evaluation examined how well VASPs complied with the Travel Rule. Additionally, the meeting allowed both organizations to exchange ideas on how to enhance their compliance processes. In a move ahead of the industry, Korbit in September became the first Korean crypto exchange to adopt new rules for real-name bank accounts, a policy that will become mandatory in January of the following year.Oh Se-jin, Korbit’s CEO, highlighted the increasing significance of filing STRs, citing recent FIU data that showed VASPs submitted more STRs in the first three quarters of this year than in the entirety of last year. He affirmed Korbit’s dedication to establishing itself as a secure and reliable cryptocurrency exchange through ongoing collaborations with Shinhan Bank.Meanwhile, Korbit has managed to cut down the review period for STRs to a third of its previous duration. Additionally, the exchange verifies the effectiveness of its STR rules by performing monthly evaluations and seeking advice from external consultants.
