Thai SEC halts Zipmex operations amid financial concerns

Policy & Regulation·February 06, 2024, 2:08 AM

The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a directive mandating Zipmex, a Singapore-based digital asset trading and brokerage platform, to temporarily suspend its operations.

This decision is driven by the SEC's call for significant changes in Zipmex's management structure and an improvement in its financial position. The regulator outlined that the cryptocurrency exchange can resume normal operations if it addresses these concerns.

15 days to rectify issues

In an official announcement last Friday, the SEC conveyed that Zipmex has a specified period of 15 days to rectify its financial position and operational deficiencies, aligning with the prior orders from the financial regulator. The SEC emphasizes that once the crypto exchange fulfills the regulator's requirements, users should be able to resume fund withdrawals.

The securities watchdog had initially issued an order to Zipmex on Jan. 12, instructing the exchange to adjust the maintenance of its net liquid capital and modify its business administration structure and personnel to enhance efficiency and protect customer interests.

Anek Yooyuen, Deputy Secretary General of the SEC, explained the legal process involved, stating:

"According to the process specified by law, if the digital asset business operator is unable to comply with the SEC’s orders within the specified period, the SEC may propose that the Minister of Finance consider revoking the order."

Implementation of robust system to protect investors

In addition to implementing the SEC's orders regarding its financial operation and operational deficiencies, the exchange is required to establish a robust system protecting investors' deposited assets against exploitation.

Once these objectives have been achieved within the required timeframe, Zipmex is obligated to submit a report on these implementations for SEC approval, paving the way for the resumption of operations. The Thai regulator stated that “Zipmex will be able to resume normal business operations upon receiving permission from the SEC.”

Longstanding regulatory scrutiny

Zipmex has been under the regulatory microscope since 2023, facing scrutiny following the company’s struggles off the back of the last crypto market downturn. The SEC's investigation includes a probe into an acquisition by V Ventures and whether Zipmex operated in Thailand without regulatory approval. V Ventures canceled its $100 million buyout of the company in 2023, which would have included the return of customer deposits.

The Thoresen Thai Agencies subsidiary company deemed the entire deal terminated on the basis that Zipmex had not fulfilled its contractual obligations relative to the buyout. The platform suspended trading in November 2023, citing regulatory compliance as the reason.

Despite the operational suspension, user withdrawals will remain accessible to facilitate an exit from the platform. The initial freeze of withdrawals in July 2022 due to Terra's ecosystem collapse, coupled with crypto lender bankruptcies, led Zipmex to seek court protection and legal assistance to raise capital for creditor payouts.

The platform presented a reorganization plan last year, proposing creditor payouts of up to 30 cents on the dollar, subject to asset recovery. However, the initial offer was set at 3.35 cents, with the potential for a higher repayment figure based on the firm's eventual asset recovery.

Bitget Report Finds Gen Z Dominates Crypto Copy TradingA recent report by Bitget, the Seychelles-headquartered crypto exchange, sheds light on the growing trend of copy trading among younger investors, particularly Gen Z.Photo by rc.xyz NFT gallery on Unsplash44% under 25The report, released on Thursday, reveals that an impressive 44% of all copy traders on the platform are under the age of 25, indicating a strong inclination among this generation towards this type of investment and trading strategy.Copy trading, or social trading, involves emulating the trading activities of established investors. Bitget’s findings indicate that the younger demographic is more receptive to this approach, with individuals aged 25 to 35 constituting just under one-third of all copy traders. Comparatively, individuals aged 35 to 55 represented 17% of copy traders, while those over 55 constituted a mere 7%.Reliance on influencersInterestingly, this trend aligns with Generation Z’s penchant for seeking advice from social media influencers. Bitget’s report highlights that Gen Z’s tendency to turn to these influencers for investment decisions could be a driving factor behind their affinity for copy trading.A survey by Forbes Advisor in January found that approximately 80% of both Gen Z and millennials rely on financial advice from social media platforms. Notably, platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and TikTok have gained their trust, with half of the respondents claiming to have profited from advice received. The report also reinforces crypto’s status as the preferred investment choice among Gen Z. A joint study by the CFA Institute and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Foundation in May revealed that crypto was the most popular investment option for Gen Z in the United States, a striking 44% of Gen Z investors initiated their investment journey with cryptocurrencies, surpassing the 35% of millennials who did the same.Geographical differencesThe trend extends beyond the US, with 43% of British and 35% of Canadian Gen Z investors indicating crypto as their inaugural investment.Geographically, Bitget’s report showcases intriguing patterns among its copy-trading user base. This proportion stands as the highest among all regions surveyed, reflecting a growing appetite for innovative investment methods on the African continent.Bitget’s report underscores the evolving landscape of investment practices, with Generation Z at the forefront of embracing new approaches like copy trading. It also builds on prior initiatives and research undertaken by the firm. In May Bitget launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project titled “Blockchain4Youth.” That initiative revealed that Bitget understands that the younger generation is where the greatest opportunity for mass market adoption lies for crypto and Web3.As the influence of social media on financial decisions continues to rise, the crypto industry may see further shifts in investment patterns and strategies among different demographic groups.

Bitstamp awarded MPI license in Singapore

Singaporean regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has awarded cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp a Major Payment Institution (MPI) trading license.Photo by Julien de Salaberry on UnsplashExpanding into APACIn a blog post published on July 3, Bitstamp proclaimed that it is “globally trusted & now licensed in Singapore.” The company described the acquisition of the license as a milestone that “marks the start of [its] expansion into the APAC region.” It emerged in June 2024 that Bitstamp had been acquired by American trading platform Robinhood. The $200 million acquisition was finally completed last month. Bitstamp signaled last September that it planned to expand its institutional business across Australia and Asia. Earlier this year, parent company Robinhood outlined that it would use Bitstamp to crypto offerings in Singapore in 2025.Acquiring licensesAt that time, Johann Kerbrat, vice-president and general manager of Robinhood Crypto, said that “part of the reason why Bitstamp was attractive was because of their licenses with Singapore, in addition to its institutional business.” This latest license award strengthens the company’s efforts in gaining more traction in Asia. Licensing is all the more relevant given the recent actions of the Singaporean regulator. Last month, MAS set a June 30 deadline for unlicensed crypto firms operating out of the city-state and serving overseas customers to cease offering such services. Over recent years, Singapore has been striving towards establishing itself as a global hub for crypto startups. It has been successful in that endeavor insofar as a whole host of international crypto businesses have established a presence there.  However, its recent move to curb unlicensed firms working out of Singapore in providing services internationally has been interpreted as a much more cautious approach being taken by the Singaporean authorities. The regulator clarified its concerns recently:”MAS has set the bar high for licensing and will generally not issue a licence. The money laundering risks are higher in such business models and if their substantive regulated activity is outside of Singapore, MAS is unable to effectively supervise such persons. Without a licence, such DTSPs [Digital Token Service Providers] will have to cease their regulated activities.”Caution in Singapore to benefit Hong KongSingapore has been competing with cities like Hong Kong to develop and maintain that crypto hub status. Some commentators have expressed the view that Hong Kong will benefit from this latest move in Singapore.  Joshua Chu, a lawyer who co-chairs the Hong Kong Web3 Association, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently that “this is likely to attract quality projects [to Hong Kong] looking for a compliant, liquid, and globally connected base.” In addition to licensing achieved in Asia, Bitstamp has acquired licensing in a number of European countries such as Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands. Last month, Robinhood launched the trading of tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for users resident within the European Union (EU). It also revealed that it is in the process of building out a layer-2 network on top of the Arbitrum blockchain with a view towards using it to host tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
