SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

Web3 & Enterprise·February 13, 2024, 2:00 AM

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy.

SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible.

The AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy

According to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain.

The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.

Price surge

In response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023.

The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network.

AUS and SUI blockchain education initiatives

This latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students.

The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students.

SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.

Thailand greenlights U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF access

The decision by U.S. regulators to approve spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January appears to be having some knock-on effects, with the latest such response seeing the Thai authorities enable access to such products for institutional investors and ultra-high-net-worth individuals within Thailand.Photo by Karolina Grabowska on PexelsMeeting a growing demandAccording to a report in the Bangkok Post on March 12, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has agreed that Thai asset management firms may manage and offer funds that incorporate investment in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF products. The decision was arrived at following a recent SEC board meeting. The SEC's decision reflects a strategic response to the growing demand for digital asset exposure among institutional investors. It would appear that spot Bitcoin ETF approval in the United States has bolstered investor confidence in this investment instrument on an international basis. Urging cautionDespite the opportunities this presents for institutional investors, the SEC has emphasized caution, citing the high-risk nature of digital asset investments. SEC Secretary-General Pornanong Budsaratragoon verbalized that need for caution, stating: "Asset management firms asked the SEC for them to have exposure in digital assets, especially Bitcoin and spot Bitcoin ETFs, but we need to consider carefully whether to allow asset management firms to invest in digital assets directly due to the high risk.”It’s interesting to note that in an immediate response to the approval of these products in the United States in January, Thailand’s SEC clarified that it had no plans to allow asset management firms to launch similar products within Thailand. For the moment at least, it seems that demand will be satisfied by accessing products that have gained exposure to U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs instead. Retail investors excludedWhile this move expands the investment landscape for institutional players, retail investors in Thailand find themselves sidelined due to regulatory restrictions. The amended regulations primarily cater to accredited investors, leaving retail participation in spot Bitcoin ETFs out of reach. This exclusion contrasts with the popularity of retail crypto trading in Thailand, albeit within regulated boundaries. Recent government regulations have both facilitated and restricted certain crypto activities. Thailand's move aligns with broader trends in the cryptocurrency sector, with several countries, including South Korea and Hong Kong, exploring opportunities in the space. In Hong Kong, regulators are currently processing applications for Bitcoin ETFs, with several financial institutions expressing interest in introducing spot Bitcoin ETFs. Just like the Thai authorities, the governor of the Royal Bank of India (RBI) had also responded in the aftermath of product approval in the U.S. stating that he didn’t favor the approval of such products in India. Despite that, news emerged on March 11 that Indian crypto investment platform Mudrex is planning to meet demand by providing clients with access to these U.S. products. As institutional investors gear up to capitalize on this opportunity in Thailand, the regulatory framework surrounding digital assets will continue to shape market dynamics, both domestically and internationally.

Ethereum Foundation targets Asian expansion with Bangkok set for Devcon 7

The Ethereum Foundation is set to make a significant impact on the Southeast Asian Ethereum community as it announces Bangkok as the location for Devcon 7.Photo by Viktor Forgacs on UnsplashFocusing on Southeast AsiaThe Ethereum developer conference will be held in the Thai capital from Nov. 12 to 15. The decision signifies a broadened vision for the event, shifting from a city-focused approach to embracing the entire Southeast Asia region as the backdrop for this community gathering. To underscore the Foundation’s intent, it has renamed the event from Devcon 7 to "Devcon Southeast Asia." Expressing enthusiasm about the potential and rapid growth of the Ethereum community in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation sees the scheduling of Devcon 7 for 2024 as an opportunity to deeply engage with local communities, providing meaningful support and empowerment. This shift aims to make Devcon 7 a more inclusive and regionally focused event, aptly named "Devcon Southeast Asia" to highlight its broader reach and impact. There has already been a positive reaction from crypto community members in the region in response to the choice of Bangkok for the conference. Navaporn Nalita, the founder of Crypto City Connext in Thailand wrote that “Bangkok's collaborative ecosystem, welcomes Devcon 2024 with open arms (and open blockchains)! Thailand's vibrant dev scene is primed to ignite alongside the world's brightest minds.” In short order, community builders have been looking to make the most out of the opportunity. Aligning with crypto growth potentialAccording to the blog post published by the Ethereum Foundation outlining the announcement, the choice of Bangkok as the host city aligns with the region's crypto adoption growth. Countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have shown remarkable positions in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, underscoring the pivotal role of Southeast Asia in the global Ethereum landscape. To support Ethereum events, grassroots communities and educational initiatives in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) initiated the Road to Devcon (RTD) Grants round on June 29. This grant round is specifically aimed at individuals in Southeast Asia actively building communities, developing educational activities, and contributing to the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem. Encouraging smaller meet-ups over large events, the EF set the maximum grant at $1,000. The initiative aims to empower the Southeast Asian Ethereum community by providing support along the Road to Devcon. In a recent Chainalysis research report, Vietnam has emerged as the leader in cryptocurrency adoption within Southeast Asia, claiming the top spot in the region and ranking third globally in the Global Crypto Adoption Index for 2023. This index considers transaction volumes, protocols, web traffic patterns and factors like population size and purchasing power. The competition among Southeast Asian countries to establish themselves as crypto hubs is evident. Each nation adopts different regulatory approaches, with Singapore and Thailand implementing stricter measures. There has been a steady stream of Ethereum developer-centric conferences in recent years. 2022 featured EthDenver, Avax Barcelona, Devconnect Amsterdam, Devcon Bogota and EthSF (San Francisco). EthDenver, EthCC Paris and Devconnect Istanbul followed in 2023. As Devcon Southeast Asia approaches, the Ethereum Foundation anticipates fostering deeper connections and collaboration in this vibrant and evolving ecosystem.
