Arbitrum is one of the largest Layer-2 blockchains operating on the Layer-1 Ethereum network, designed to address the scalability issue of the ETH network. DefiLlama, a DeFi total value locked (TVL) aggregator, shows that Arbitrum has the fourth largest TVL among all chain networks, and the largest TVL among ETH-based Layer 2 networks.

To foster Arbitrum-based services, DeSpread plans to distribute research content and development guides to Korean developers in an effort to bring down the language and cultural barriers when working with Arbitrum. Regular events featuring Arbitrum experts are also in store, set to be held both online and in-person formats. These efforts are intended to help companies seeking to adopt blockchain technologies collaborate with Arbitrum.

Forging an ecosystem within the Korean ETH community

Jeff Kim, Head of operation at DeSpread, expressed his excitement about the partnership with Arbitrum, saying that Arbitrum is the network showing the strongest performance among all Layer 2 solutions on the ETH network. He added that Despread plans to support Arbitrum so that it can create its ecosystem within the Korean Ethereum community and raise its brand awareness.

Nina Rong, Head of Ecosystem Development at Arbitrum, stated that Arbitrum has long been keeping an eye on Korea’s blockchain ecosystem. The partnership will help Arbitrum strengthen its position in the Korean market and shape a developer-friendly environment for individuals and businesses, she said.

ETH surge being led by Asian market

Over the course of the past two weeks, the unit price of Ethereum (ETH) has surged 32%, with a report from a Singapore-based crypto financial services firm asserting that the Asian market has had a large part to play in that increase. Taking to X on July 16, Matrixport, a crypto financial services platform, provided its daily analysis in which it suggested that “Ethereum’s recent outperformance appears to be heavily influenced by Asia.”Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashAsian market influenceThe company included a graph in which it had plotted Ethereum’s recent performance during Asian trading hours, asserting that as much as 17% of the uptick in the Ether unit price can be accounted for by the actions of market participants within the Asian market. It added:"The influence of the Asian market in the pricing of crypto assets is continuing to rise, whether in terms of volatility or trading momentum.” ETH ETFs in Hong KongSpot ETH exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were approved in Hong Kong in April 2024. Hong Kong ETH ETF volumes have risen substantially in July, with significant inflows being recorded related to both retail and institutional investors.  In the past, many commentators have suggested that the addition of staking would be an attractive prospect for institutional investors who like the idea of accumulating an ongoing yield. With that, Asian investors may be enticed to delve further into Ethereum positions going forward, given that ETF issuers are trying to add that component to their offerings. Huaxia Fund, a subsidiary of China Asset Management (ChinaAMC), is preparing to launch staking as part of its ETH ETF. Another potential driver for ETH in Asia in the future lies with the ongoing enablement of trading via established institutions. Earlier this week, China Merchants Bank’s brokerage arm received a virtual asset license in Hong Kong to trade crypto assets. It’s the first mainland China-affiliated brokerage to be awarded such a license, with licensing enabling it to offer trading services related to assets like Ether. Global assetWhile Asia is playing a role in ETH’s recent move upwards, the asset is traded globally and with that, factors further afield are also playing a role. Tom Lee, founder of American financial research firm Fundstrat, pointed out on X that ETH had been range-bound since 2021. However, he believes that the rise of stablecoins, which by and large run on Ethereum, together with ongoing growth in the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), is driving demand for the digital asset. While Bitcoin treasury companies have played a significant part in driving Bitcoin in recent months, Ethereum is starting to see similar activity. Lee made the point that Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) “set the standard for Treasuries,” but that now BitMine “wants to be the Microstrategy of Ethereum.” The crypto mining and treasury firm confirmed on July 17 that it now holds $1 billion worth of Ethereum. Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and chief investment officer (CIO) at Hong Kong family office, Maelstrom, said that it was “ETH szn” and that the Maelstrom Fund is buying the digital asset. Tom Dunleavy, head of venture at Varys Capital, asserts that ETH will hit a unit price of $10,000 by the end of 2026.

3AC-founded OPNX Exchange announces closure

In a recent announcement OPNX, the Seychelles-incorporated cryptocurrency bankruptcy claims platform co-founded by the creators of the now-defunct hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), has revealed its decision to cease all operations.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashFebruary 14 shutdownIn a message to its users, subsequently shared on social media on Thursday, the OPNX team expressed its commitment to ensuring an orderly closure, urging users to settle all positions by Feb. 7 and withdraw their funds from the platform before Feb. 14, as all withdrawal functionality will be disabled thereafter. The team expressed gratitude to the OPNX community, acknowledging their dedication and trust throughout the platform's existence. Short for "Open Exchange," OPNX served as both a hybrid bankruptcy claims platform and a crypto exchange, enabling users to trade creditor claims of bankrupt crypto companies. The origin of OPNX can be linked to two defunct crypto entities — Coinflex and 3AC. Seychelles-based Coinflex was a crypto yield platform that was forced to suspend withdrawals in June 2022. It subsequently entered into a bankruptcy process. Coinflex co-founder Mark Lamb joined forces with 3AC’s Kyle Davies and Su Zhu to found OPNX. In October, Coinflex creditors sued Lamb, alleging that he had appropriated Coinflex's intellectual property, customer base, employees and technology to establish OPNX. Mired in problemsWithin its short existence, OPNX has been mired in problems. From the very outset, there was little goodwill for the new venture, given that many crypto sector participants took a dim view of Zhu and Davies due to the turmoil the collapse of 3AC caused within the industry. In April of last year, OPNX claimed to have significant venture capital backing, only for many of the VC entities mentioned to quickly deny such claims subsequently. The following month, the local regulator in Dubai, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, formally reprimanded the OPNX founders for promoting an unregulated business within the Emirate of Dubai. In August, it emerged that VARA had hit OPNX and its founders with a hefty fine. Following the closure announcement, the native OX token of OPNX experienced a significant price decline. Over the course of the past 24 hours, the token unit price has fallen 13.6% to $0.007981. The failure of 3AC led to Teneo, the firm responsible for liquidating 3AC's assets, subpoenaing Zhu and Davies for concealing details of their physical whereabouts through messages on social media platform X. The closure of OPNX adds to the challenges faced by Zhu and Davies, as Teneo is actively seeking to recover $1.3 billion directly from the co-founders. The claim asserts that Zhu and Davies engaged in substantial leverage with investor funds after the insolvency of their hedge fund. In September 2023, Singapore's central bank issued nine-year prohibition orders against Davies and Zhu, citing alleged violations of the country's securities laws at Three Arrows Capital. All the while, crypto community sentiment remains negative where OPNX and its founders are concerned. Taking to social media, Ikigai Asset Management’s Travis Kling didn’t mince his words, stating:”I mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say **** these criminals.” As OPNX concludes its operations, the unfolding events surrounding its co-founders and their association with the failed hedge fund continue to draw attention to the need for the industry to raise its standards.

Bitget Introduces Innovative MPC Wallet for Enhanced Security

Bitget Introduces Innovative MPC Wallet for Enhanced SecurityBitget, the Seychelles-registered crypto derivatives platform, has unveiled a cutting-edge security and key management feature that could potentially be a game changer in terms of the way users safeguard their assets.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on UnsplashIntroducing Multi-Party Computation (MPC)As confirmed via a press release on Tuesday, the Bitget team has introduced the Multi-Party Computation (MPC) wallet service to its Bitget Wallet, a relatively new solution in the realm of cryptocurrency security. This development comes on the heels of the launch of the account abstraction wallet service powered by the Ethereum scaling protocol Starknet in July. The introduction of the MPC wallet could well be a paradigm shift relative to crypto security as it leverages a distributed key generation mechanism, distributing multiple key shares to various locations under the control of different parties. This approach introduces a robust process, demanding that the owners of these distributed private key shares collectively sign and authorize transactions.Notably, the MPC wallet shatters the conventional industry practice of relying on users to store or memorize mnemonic phrases and private keys. In a departure from the current norm, this wallet streamlines the user experience by eliminating the need for mnemonics and instead implementing a password-based authentication method provided by Bitget, effectively eliminating the reliance on a single-point private key.Unlocking MPC technologyBitget’s vision with the MPC wallet is to deliver a user experience reminiscent of traditional Web2 products and services. From a technical standpoint, the MPC wallet is rooted in a threshold signature scheme, employing secure large prime numbers to underpin its security architecture. This consumer-oriented development mandates a minimum number for signature authorization, requiring two-thirds of the total key shares to complete the signature necessary for authorizing a transaction. Notably, the final key share finds secure refuge on a backup cloud server, contributing to a highly decentralized and secure ecosystem. Moreover, the MPC wallet offers a robust sharing mechanism that automatically invalidates key shares on older devices when new devices are integrated. This innovative feature substantially mitigates the risk of key shares being compromised on outdated or forgotten devices, reinforcing user confidence and security.Trending towards crypto self-custodyBitget’s introduction of the MPC wallet underscores the growing significance of self-custody in the cryptocurrency space. In the wake of high-profile failures and security breaches on centralized exchanges, such as FTX, self-custody has emerged as a paramount consideration for cryptocurrency enthusiasts and investors. As a testament to this trend, in March 2023, Ledger, a prominent hardware wallet manufacturer, secured $109 million in funding to bolster hardware production and develop novel products, underlining the increasing demand for secure and user-centric solutions in the crypto world.Bitget Wallet is a rebrand of the wallet produced by BitKeep, a Singapore-based project which Bitget acquired earlier this year. The crypto platform has been working on various initiatives that go some way towards reassuring customers. It had previously introduced proof of reserves reporting. While this system doesn’t provide the whole picture, proof of reserves does go some way in reassuring customers that their funds are still held by the platform and not loaned out or otherwise removed from the platform.
