Shapella Upgrade to Have limited Impact on ETH’s Selling Pressure

Markets·April 13, 2023, 6:06 AM

The Shapella upgrade on the Ethereum network scheduled to take place on Wednesday will only have a limited impact on the selling pressure on ETH, according to a report by the research center at Korean cryptocurrency exchange Korbit.

Shapella upgrade

One of the key features of the Shapella upgrade is to allow withdrawal of staked ETH. This upgrade follows September’s Merge upgrade that switched the Ethereum network’s consensus algorithm from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, significantly reducing electricity consumption.

Impact on selling pressure

To predict the impact of the Shapella upgrade on the selling pressure on ETH, the analysts at Korbit Research calculated the amount of time it takes for all the ETH staked as of March 22 to be withdrawn. They believe this calculation is relevant because withdrawals of staked ETH could trigger bulk sales, potentially imposing a greater selling pressure on ETH.

According to the findings, the daily sell volume for the first three days is expected to be 300,700 ETH, 0.254% of the circulating supply. This volume will gradually decrease to 43,000 ETH for the next six months and to 29,000 ETH for the following six months, each corresponding to 0.035% and 0.024% of the circulating supply, respectively.

All in all, bulk selling of ETH is not likely, considering it will take about a year and five months for all the staked ETH to be withdrawn and that the amount of withdrawable ETH will stay relatively low for each period. Furthermore, since this analysis assumes an extreme case, the market will be able to effectively handle the volume over the six month to 18 month period.

4 other reasons

In addition, Korbit Research outlined four other aspects that limit the selling pressure on ETH.

Firstly, there is some concern that the selling volume of ETH may increase due to unstaking resulting from the cessation of staking services at American crypto exchange Kraken. However, a decrease in the number of validators on the Ethereum network will raise the base reward. This may prompt those who unstaked ETH to stake them on other platforms, rather than selling them.

Second, ETH locked up at liquidity staking protocols such as Lido Finance and Rocket Pool provide liquidity for representations of staked ETH. These platforms allow users to stake fewer than 32 ETH for rewards. According to a February Binance Research report, 57.7% of ETH stakers enjoy liquidity and rewards. Therefore, there may be a limited impetus to divest of staked ETH.

Third, since only 41.1% of ETH stakers are seeing profits as of the time of writing the report, the remaining stakers would have to risk losses when withdrawing ETH. This suggests that those not yet seeing profits are more likely to keep ETH staked. Furthermore, Dune Analytics data shows that most of the ETH stakers with gains staked ETH when its price was relatively low, which indicates that they participated in staking in early days. Shivam Sharma, the author of the aforementioned Binance report, states that these ETH stakers are likely “some of the strongest Ethereum believers.”

Lastly, despite the Shapella upgrade, ETH withdrawals at different staking pools may not be initiated immediately. This could limit the circulation of withdrawable ETH, which in turn would hinder the selling pressure on ETH.

Macroeconomic factors

The Korbit researchers concluded their paper with a note that the selling pressure on ETH will be more influenced by macroeconomic factors than technical factors. They added that a possible downturn in the overall economy and corrections in risky asset markets might lead investors to sell ETH.

Five Foreigners Detained in Thai Crypto Scam Crackdown

Five Foreigners Detained in Thai Crypto Scam CrackdownAgainst a background that continues to see the crypto sector plagued by fraud, Thai authorities have taken decisive action by detaining five foreign nationals accused of orchestrating a multi-million dollar crypto scam.Photo by Dan Freeman on UnsplashA $76 million griftThe scam was clever in that it targeted the aspirations of over 3,200 victims, promising them substantial returns through fraudulent investments in gold and cryptos like Tether (USDT). In its wake, the scheme has left countless investors devastated, with some resorting to drastic measures like securing second mortgages on their homes.According to a report on Monday by The Bangkok Post, an English-language publication in Thailand, Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) told the publication on Sunday that it had initiated an extensive investigation into BCH Global Limited, the company at the heart of the scam. The individuals responsible for perpetrating the alleged fraud are four Chinese nationals and one Laotian citizen. They now face a litany of charges including fraud, transnational crime, money laundering, and the falsification of computer documents. The scammers ingeniously enticed their victims with alluring promises of remarkable returns through their crypto investment platform, bchgloballtd.com.International cooperationThailand’s efforts to bring these culprits to justice did not take place in isolation. The Thai authorities forged partnerships with international law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security in the United States, which aided the Thai authorities greatly in their investigations. The collective effort ultimately culminated in the arrest of the five suspects and the seizure of properties valued at 585 million baht ($16.5 million) by Thailand’s Anti-Money Laundering Office.Part of a broader problemWhile this particular crypto scam is significant, it is far from an isolated incident within Thailand. It adds to the growing concerns of Thai officials who are becoming increasingly exasperated with the prevalence of cryptocurrency scams within their borders.Thai authorities have even issued a stern warning to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, cautioning that failure to address the issue of deceptive advertisements on its platform may lead to expulsion. The government contends that over 5,300 fraudulent ads on Facebook have victimized more than 200,000 Thai citizens. The overarching Asian region in general appears to be harder hit when it comes to crypto-related scams. In August, a $120 million crypto ponzi scheme was exposed in India. Last month the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) issued a press release warning investors to be mindful of fraudulent crypto investment schemes. The very same month, Singaporean authorities uncovered a $1.3 million crypto mining scam. The apprehension of the five suspects responsible for the $76 million crypto scam underscores the pressing need for more stringent regulations and heightened vigilance within the crypto space. Such measures are required if innocent investors are to be protected from falling victim to similar scams in the future.

Over the last two years, Orbiter has processed over 12 million transactions with a total transaction volume surpassing $7.8 billion. The protocol has amassed a user base of over three million and cultivated a community exceeding 700,000 users and enthusiasts.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashOrbiter Rollup announcementAccording to a series of posts on the X social media platform over the course of the weekend, the project is gearing up to launch a ZK-tech-based instant omni-chain rollup on Ethereum. A standout feature of the protocol is the integration of ZK Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) to authenticate Layer 2 transactions on the mainnet and combat fraudulent re-layers via the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).  This development introduces a secure, efficient, low-cost and rapid communication mechanism for Ethereum, with the added security benefits of ZK-SPV enabling Orbiter Finance to grant complete access to the "Maker" role. This marks a significant milestone in achieving decentralization within blockchain infrastructure. Dora Yue, founder of OKX Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about spearheading the strategic investment in Orbiter Finance. She highlighted the protocol's ability to overcome traditional bridge limitations, specifically in terms of speed, and its crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of cross-chaining between various Layer 2s and the Ethereum mainnet. Other investors in the project include Redpoint China, Hash Global and Skyland Ventures. Supporting 19 networksCurrently supporting over 19 Layer 2 rollups and a multitude of native Ethereum assets, Orbiter Finance is positioning itself as a vital infrastructure component for the Layer 2 ecosystem. Yue commended the team's ongoing commitment to product upgrades and their dedication to ensuring a more decentralized and trustless foundation for the Layer 2 ecosystem's growth in 2024. With an initial capital commitment of $100 million, OKX Ventures is focused on exploring and supporting the best global blockchain projects, fostering cutting-edge technology innovation, and investing in projects that provide long-term structural value. The venture aims to nurture innovative companies by offering global resources and leveraging historical experience in the blockchain industry. Orbiter Finance also maintains an openness to incorporating additional networks. It has established strategic partnerships with key players such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Linea, zkSync, Base, Starknet, Scroll, Manta Network and others. In this manner, it has solidified its position in the ecosystem. Notably, the protocol announced a collaborative strategic partnership with Ingonyama earlier this month, taking a step forward in advancing ZKP acceleration. Ingonyama is a next-generation semiconductor company specializing in ZK-proof technology. With that, it is actively exploring the integration of ICICLE, a GPU library for zero-knowledge acceleration, into Orbiter's ZKP system through multiple meetings and code-sharing initiatives.
