SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

Web3 & Enterprise·February 13, 2024, 2:00 AM

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy.

SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible.

The AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy

According to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain.

The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.

Price surge

In response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023.

The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network.

AUS and SUI blockchain education initiatives

This latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students.

The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students.

SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.

MEXC Ventures invests in Triv to drive expansion

MEXC Ventures, the venture arm of the Seychelles-headquartered MEXC global crypto exchange, has announced a strategic investment into Triv, one of Indonesia’s largest crypto exchange platforms, as part of an effort to drive further expansion of the business.Photo by Eugenia Clara on UnsplashSupporting blockchain & crypto innovationIn a press release published via PR Newswire on Aug. 5, MEXC Ventures confirmed the strategic investment, which was agreed upon based on a $200 million valuation of the Triv business. MEXC Ventures asserted that the investment falls in line with its global strategy of supporting and developing innovative blockchain and crypto sector projects. Additionally, the firm claims that the move will enable it to capitalize on Southeast Asia’s fast-growing digital asset market. MEXC Ventures Investment Director Leo Zhao said that the company was excited “to back Triv in its next phase of growth." He added: "Indonesia is one of the most dynamic and promising digital asset markets in the region, and Triv has earned a strong reputation for compliance, security, and user trust. Through this partnership, we look forward to supporting Triv in serving Indonesian users even better and accelerating the adoption of digital assets across the country." Well-established exchangeEstablished back in 2015, Triv provides spot crypto trading services, alongside staking services for Ethereum (ETH) and Cardano (ADA). The platform supports payment systems like Advcash and PayPal to enable users to make e-commerce payments and to cover everyday expenses such as utility bills. The platform is recognized for its advanced trading features. Earlier this year, Triv added the Triv Shield, a security tool that prevents platform users from inadvertently interacting with malicious contracts. The company operates under the oversight of Indonesian regulators, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, better known as BAPPEBTI. Gabriel Rey, Founder and CEO of Triv, said that the partnership will enable the platform to expand its coin offerings, “enhance liquidity and introduce more innovative products for both new and existing users.” He believes that the partnership will also be helpful in maintaining CryptoWave Media, an educational platform that forms part of Triv Group, as a leading crypto media outlet in Indonesia.  Earlier this year, MEXC Ventures launched a $300 million Ecosystem Development Fund geared towards accelerating innovation and ecosystem growth within the blockchain sector. At the time, MEXC Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tracy Jin said that the company’s overall vision was to transition from a trading venue to an ecosystem platform, facilitating the needs of crypto industry firms. The company previously made a $16 million strategic investment into Ethena, a stablecoin project built on Ethereum that offers the USDe decentralized stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. As part of that deal, it also bought $20 million worth of USDe. In April, MEXC Ventures launched IgniteX, a $30 million initiative designed to support and foster Web3 talent and innovation.

OKX enables zero-fee SGD transfers in Singapore

Seychelles-headquartered global crypto exchange OKX outlined on Nov. 18 that it will offer instant, zero-fee Singaporean dollar (SGD) deposits and withdrawals into and out of the exchange platform for customers resident in Singapore.Photo by Peter Nguyen on UnsplashDBS partnershipIn a press release published by GlobeNewswire on behalf of OKX, the company outlined that it has been in a position to enable this feature for its Singapore-based customers due to a collaboration with Singapore’s largest bank, DBS Bank. OKX Singapore CEO Gracie Lin said that “working with DBS to provide payment rail infrastructure in Singapore provides customers with secure and seamless access to digital assets.” As DBS is one of 27 banks that participate in PayNow, a real-time payment system that falls under the Fast and Secure Transfers (FAST) service in Singapore, OKX customers who are also customers of a bank that participates in the PayNow scheme, can effect those SGD deposits and withdrawals in real time. Lin added that OKX is working towards the addition of more features in an effort to further enhance the customer experience. The new offering takes OKX a step further towards integrating with the local traditional finance system (TradFi).  Singpass integrationAdditionally, the exchange has also integrated Singpass verification. Singpass is a digital identity system that enables Singaporean residents to access private sector and government services online. Back in March, the company acquired in-principle approval (IPA) from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in respect of a Major Payments Institution (MPI) license. Continuing that shift towards regulatory compliance, it followed up with the acquisition of a full MPI license from MAS in September. The company is now one of 29 crypto sector firms to have been licensed by MAS in Singapore. While a particular effort has been made in Singapore, OKX has been making similar in-roads elsewhere. Last month, it launched its service in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), having received full licensing from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). Making further progress in October, OKX partnered with UK-headquartered multinational bank Standard Chartered for institutional crypto custody. Both Singapore and the UAE are seen by the company to be strategic crypto hubs. However, its efforts in expanding its offering globally has also taken it into other markets. In February OKX launched OKX TR, a specialized crypto exchange platform catering to the specific needs of the Turkish market. In an emailed response to Reuters, DBS Bank’s Head of Digital Assets, Evy Theunis, commented on its partnership with OKX:”DBS has been actively fostering a responsible and innovative digital asset ecosystem in Singapore for several years now. Working with OKX deepens the bank's wide-ranging involvement in this space." DBS has been following its own path as a pioneering TradFi entity getting further involved in cryptocurrency, blockchain and tokenization. Last month it launched DBS Token Services for institutions, integrating tokenization and smart contracting capabilities within its existing conventional services.
