SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

Web3 & Enterprise·February 13, 2024, 2:00 AM

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy.

SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible.

The AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy

According to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain.

The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.

Price surge

In response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023.

The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network.

AUS and SUI blockchain education initiatives

This latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students.

The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students.

SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.

Bitgamo Set to Launch 150 Crypto ATMs in Asia

Bitgamo Set to Launch 150 Crypto ATMs in AsiaIn a press release published on Monday, Luxembourg-registered crypto startup Bitgamo outlined its intention to roll out crypto ATMs across Asia.Photo by Monstera Production on PexelsAsian network rolloutDescribing itself as a no KYC (Know Your Customer) exchange for crypto-to-fiat transactions, the firm has the intention of embarking on a crypto expansion initiative that will see it deploy 150 crypto ATMs across key Asian markets. The press release quotes “official sources” as having confirmed that these crypto ATMs will be operational across the region by February 2024. The firm intends to locate the machines within markets such as Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.European expansionIn alignment with its growth strategy, Bitgamo has also unveiled plans to introduce an additional 75 cryptocurrency ATMs across Europe over the course of 2024.Founded in 2020, Bitgamo claims that its objective is to address privacy concerns while promoting the adoption of cryptocurrencies in regions where acquiring and holding digital assets can be challenging.Gabriel Weber, the company’s Director of Communications, expressed his excitement about the expansion initiative. He stated:“We are thrilled to be able to offer this innovative service in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. The addition of our ATMs will make it super easy for users to sell crypto, and we are confident that they will be valuable resources for the thriving crypto communities in these countries.”No KYCThe crypto exchange and ATM business claims to offer a no KYC exchange policy, which sets it apart in an increasingly regulated landscape. As a Luxembourg-registered entity, Bitgamo classifies cryptocurrencies as commodities, adhering it says, to the legal framework of its home country. While the convenience of a no KYC approach is evident, it appears to be going against the current trend and recent regulatory pressures. Earlier this year Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin implemented mandatory KYC. Bitget, another Seychelles-based exchange, followed suit earlier this month, while another Asia-centric exchange, OKX, has tightened its KYC policy.Online concernBitgamo isn’t well known and with that, this recent announcement has sparked some in the crypto community to express doubt. One individual on crypto-Twitter wrote: “This is a scam…don’t fall for it!” . . . “Raising awareness as their paid press releases are currently doing the rounds, trying to lure in victims.”Meanwhile, a YouTuber called “Negocios TV” urged caution relative to what it described as a possible scam. It’s certainly true to say that there’s very little information in the public sphere relative to Bitgamo and with that, market participants will need to do their own due diligence. Equally, we are not aware if these concerns are real or misplaced. If the offering is in fact legitimate, then it’s a very positive development. Crypto ATMs have often acted as the first touch-point for many individuals in accessing digital currency. Recent years have seen a considerable increase in the global network of crypto ATMs, offering those who want to onboard into the crypto sphere easy access to doing so and possibly purchasing their first digital currency.

It follows Komainu’s previous success in obtaining its MVP license in November 2022, establishing the company as one of the first entities to receive such authorization from the local regulator. The operational license was granted by Dubai’s Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) on Friday, with the firm being added to the regulator’s virtual asset service provider register.Photo by Emma Harrisova on UnsplashEnabling a broader service offeringWith this operational license in hand, Komainu is now equipped to introduce extended institutional staking and collateral management services to clients within Dubai. A few weeks ago, another Nomura-funded company, Laser Digital Middle East FZE, was also successful in acquiring an operating license from VARA.VARA’s approach to crafting regulations has been instrumental in fostering a framework that supports permissible activities and services for customers and investors in Dubai. These regulations are designed to enhance clarity, establish certainty, and mitigate potential market risks. VARA’s overarching objective is to create a model framework that promotes both global economic sustainability and innovation.Bridging market gapFounded in 2018, Komainu’s inception was driven by the need to bridge a gap in the market by delivering secure and compliant custody services for institutional players venturing into digital asset investments.Komainu’s foundation is built upon a strategic joint venture involving prominent entities such as Nomura, CoinShares, and Ledger. It acquired its first client for Komainu Connect, the firm’s regulated settlement and custody system for institutions, in June when it signed up Seychelles-based crypto exchange OKX to the service.Headquartered in Jersey, the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) and Dubai’s Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) now provide regulatory governance where Komainu’s activities are concerned.
