Under the current tax code, cryptocurrencies are classified as other assets and taxed based on assumed returns rather than actual gains. The proposed revision could include taxing annual real returns, including unrealized gains, drawing stronger pushback from the industry. The U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has urged regional banks to enter the digital payments market by issuing stablecoins, CoinDesk reported. Under the GENIUS Act, the OCC said regional banks can apply directly for licenses to issue dollar-pegged stablecoins or apply through subsidiaries. The agency is encouraging smaller lenders to enter the stablecoin payments market rather than leaving it to large banks or crypto companies. The OCC recently finalized rules to implement the GENIUS Act, with the measures set to take effect on Jan. 18, 2027. From that date, stablecoin issuers must comply with the final rules set by the OCC, although existing issuers with substantially completed license applications can seek temporary exemptions.

Ethereum faces a growing risk of further declines after falling below the lower boundary of a key ascending channel, CryptoPotato reported. The outlet said ETH has remained in a downtrend since facing resistance near $2,800 in September and recently broke below $2,400, the lower end of its daily ascending channel. The $2,300-$2,350 support zone is also under pressure, leaving ETH vulnerable to declines toward the next major support levels at $2,160 and $2,000. On the four-hour chart, a break below $2,250 could accelerate the drop toward $1,900, according to the report. On the other hand, if ETH recovers $2,500, the bearish setup would be invalidated and ETH could attempt to break back above $2,800. CryptoQuant data shows the aggressive buy-sell ratio in the ETH futures market is currently around 0.973, the lowest level since June, indicating selling pressure is dominant in futures trading.
