Yogita Khatri, a senior reporter at The Block, predicted in the Dec. 1 issue of The Funding newsletter that initial coin offerings (ICOs) will make a comeback in the cryptocurrency cycle, following the memecoin trend. She noted that ICOs were key to the cryptocurrency boom in 2017 but waned after the 2018 crash due to regulatory scrutiny and high-profile failures. However, with Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president and the upcoming resignation of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, the regulatory landscape might become more favorable for ICOs.
Meanwhile, Erick Zhang, managing partner at Nomad Capital and former Binance executive, highlighted problems with token airdrops, which have sparked renewed interest in ICOs. He believes airdrops have proven "ineffective" due to low user retention and significant selling pressure after token generation events (TGEs).
