On-chain analyst Axel Adler Jr. said the profit margin for Bitcoin short-term holders with holding periods of under six months, relative to their average purchase price, fell to 5.9% from 8.7% over the past week.
In a blog post, Adler said the average purchase price for short-term holders stood at $76,000 as of Oct. 25, up $1,100 from a week earlier. Adler said if BTC falls below $76,000, short-term holders would enter loss territory on average. Adler added that the group’s average purchase price was 1.56 times that of long-term holders at $48,600, up from 1.36 times in mid-August.
Adler said the 30-day moving average crossed above the 90-day moving average on Sept. 17 in an indicator tracking the ratio between the two groups’ average purchase prices. Adler added that the same ratio had declined for an extended period before the 30-day moving average crossed above the 90-day moving average in May 2019 and February 2023, and the downtrend ended around those signals at the time.

The government is reviewing a plan to impose an education tax on cryptocurrency exchanges on the premise that they would be brought into the financial industry, the Seoul Economic Daily reported. The move means taxes could be levied once the Digital Asset Basic Act is enacted and coin exchanges are fully brought into the regulatory fold.
The report said the market sees a need for broader tax-system improvements rather than a mechanical application to the crypto industry, as the education tax currently borne by financial and insurance companies remains controversial. Banks, insurers and securities firms currently pay the education tax based on operating revenue. Starting this year, a 0.5% rate applies to the tax base of up to 1 trillion won, while 1% applies to amounts above 1 trillion won.

Insurance and reserve funds set aside to cover potential customer losses vary by as much as 26.7 times across South Korea’s crypto exchanges, the Financial News reported.
According to data South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service submitted to Min Byoung-dug of the National Policy Committee in the National Assembly, the insurance and reserve balances at the country’s five largest won-based exchanges as of the end of September were 80 billion won ($57.6 million) for Upbit, 53.4 billion won ($38.4 million) for Bithumb, 30 billion won ($21.6 million) for Coinone, 19 billion won ($13.7 million) for Digital X, formerly Korbit, and 3 billion won ($2.2 million) for Streami, which operates GOPAX.
That marked a 26.7-fold gap between the largest and smallest buffers. Bithumb’s insurance and reserves fell by 46.6%, or 46.6 billion won ($33.6 million), from 100 billion won at the end of 2024 to 53.4 billion won at the end of September this year. Upbit’s rose by 65.6%, or 31.7 billion won ($22.8 million), from 48.3 billion won over the same period to 80 billion won.

A South Korean court sentenced a man in his 20s to two years in prison for defrauding acquaintances by promising to more than double their principal through crypto investments, Yonhap News TV reported.
The Cheongju District Court found that the defendant, identified only as A, took more than 310 million won ($217,000) from eight acquaintances in 313 transactions between December 2022 and December 2025. Investigators said A misled the victims by claiming they could earn more than double their money by investing in cryptocurrencies. The court said the defendant exploited personal relationships over an extended period and also took money from some victims who had borrowed funds, while taking into account the lack of any prior criminal record and the defendant’s age in setting the sentence.

The Canadian government has published a regulatory proposal that would require stablecoin issuers to register with the Bank of Canada and is collecting public comments through Dec. 23. The proposal, published in the official gazette on Oct. 24, applies to stablecoins used in interprovincial and international transactions in Canada.
Canada currently relies on provincial and territorial securities regulators to oversee stablecoins handled by crypto trading platforms, but it does not have a comprehensive regime governing issuance itself. To implement its stablecoin law, which received royal assent in March, the government has drafted detailed rules for issuer registration and supervision. The aim is to reduce user losses tied to insufficient reserves or issuer bankruptcies, while strengthening risk management and privacy protections. The government also plans to bring companies offering stablecoin payment services under supervision through the Retail Payment Activities Act.

The guidance would not be legally binding.

Tiger Research, an Asia-based Web3 research and consulting firm, said in a report titled "암호화폐 마켓메이커, 가짜를 걸러내야 진짜가 남는다" that distrust of market makers stemmed from price-manipulation firms posing as market makers.
The report said legitimate market makers narrow spreads and continuously provide counterparties, lowering trading costs for investors. It added that crypto market makers perform the same role as in traditional finance, but operate in a fragmented market where there is no system for formal contracts with exchanges and contracts with issuers are not disclosed. Tiger Research said a basic law on digital assets is the first opportunity to address the issue, but noted the proposed bill allows market making commissioned by exchanges while recognizing contracts commissioned by token issuers only for the first six months after listing. It stressed that issuer contracts, where most problems arise, should also be brought into the regulatory framework.

As McDonald’s plans to bring back the limited-edition McRib sandwich at select U.S. stores on Oct. 27, talk that Bitcoin tends to rise when the McRib returns is drawing renewed attention, Bitcoin.com reported. Coinbase posted on X, "The McRib is coming back. Those who know, know," while Kraken, HTX and OKX also shared related posts.
Bitcoin.com said BTC showed gains after McRib returns from 2019 to 2024, with relatively fast or large advances in 2020, 2021 and 2023 in particular. It added, however, that despite several past examples of price increases, it is difficult to view the McRib launch and BTC price movements as having a reliable correlation, describing the idea as closer to a superstition circulating in the crypto community.

A monthly cryptocurrency balance reporting requirement that has sparked privacy concerns may be difficult to enforce under South Korea’s current legal framework, the Seoul Economic Daily reported. The issue is that exchanges cannot arbitrarily block deposits or withdrawals even if customers refuse to consent to sharing their personal information, limiting their ability to fulfill the reporting obligation.
The Bank of Korea has acknowledged the problem and is discussing the balance reporting issue with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, according to the report. A draft reporting manual that the central bank sent earlier this month to the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA) included a requirement for monthly submission of domestic cryptocurrency holdings for users who have made at least one overseas transfer transaction since July 19, 2024.

The total stablecoin market capitalization has fallen by $12.73 billion since May 22 to $300.36 billion as of Oct. 25, Bitcoin.com reported, citing DefiLlama data.

Stablecoins are generally seen as capital waiting to buy cryptocurrencies, and a decline in market capitalization may be interpreted as weaker buying demand.

An Ethereum whale address beginning with 0x6C67, which bought 100,000 ETH at $0.311 each during Ethereum’s 2015 ICO, deposited 1,500 ETH worth $3.45 million to an exchange, according to EmberCN.
EmberCN said the address sold 50,000 ETH in 2016 at $5.47 each for a 17-fold return, then held the remaining 50,000 ETH for 11 years before transferring funds to an external address for the first time today. The amount sent to the exchange was part of those holdings. Exchange deposits are typically interpreted as a sign of intent to sell.
