Vitalik Buterin: L2s should focus on differentiation, not just scaling

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin stated on X that the role of Layer 2 (L2) solutions in the ecosystem needs to be redefined. He noted recent discussions about the slower-than-expected progress of L2s toward Stage 2. Buterin explained that as Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) scales directly, leading to significantly lower fees, and with a gas limit increase planned for this year, L2s should no longer be viewed merely as a means of scaling. Instead, he argued, they must establish themselves as a spectrum of options, each providing its own distinct and differentiated value.
