Ethereum Foundation releases guide clarifying its role as network steward

March 13, 2026, 5:16 PM
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has published a 38-page document outlining its philosophy, priorities, and long-term role as a network steward. According to CoinDesk, the document specifies that the foundation is the initial steward of the Ethereum project but not its parent company, owner, or ruler, adding that the foundation is not the system itself. The guide emphasizes the concept of autonomy, describing it as Ethereum's core purpose. It states that Ethereum's core mission is to realize user self-sovereignty, which requires maintaining censorship resistance, open-source principles, privacy, and security during development. The foundation also aims to reduce its influence as the ecosystem matures. The document was released as the organization faces a turning point, following the resignation announcement of Co-Executive Director Tomasz StaƄczak.
