Democratic senator says CLARITY Act ethics clause cannot be enforced by DOJ alone

Democratic Sen. Angela Alsobrooks said a White House proposal to have the U.S. Department of Justice enforce the ethics provisions of the CLARITY Act, a U.S. crypto market structure bill, was not a serious proposal and Alsobrooks would not support the bill if that were the only enforcement mechanism, according to Eleanor Terrett, host of Crypto in America. Terrett said Sen. Bernie Moreno, who has been working with the White House on an agreement over the ethics provisions, previously explained the current proposal would put the ethics clause under the federal DOJ rather than state attorneys general. Alsobrooks said negotiators would continue using the proposal as a starting point in an effort to reach an agreement that holds everyone accountable. Alsobrooks was one of two Democratic senators who voted in May at the Senate Banking Committee to advance the CLARITY Act to the full Senate for consideration. Alsobrooks has said continued support depends on the final bill including strong ethics provisions.
