HKMA says timing for second round of stablecoin issuer licenses remains undecided

August 06, 2026, 6:13 AM
Hong Kong’s Monetary Authority said it would not comment on market rumors about a second round of stablecoin issuer licenses being granted around Oct. 1, according to Cailianshe. The HKMA added it remains open but cautious on whether and when to issue additional licenses, and said no clear direction has been set at this stage. The authority said its current focus is on helping the two licensed institutions prepare their businesses, while any decision on further licenses will take into account whether applicants meet eligibility requirements, market demand, real-world use cases and international regulatory trends.
