Ethereum developers propose staking overhaul to prepare for quantum computing

Ethereum developers have proposed a draft EIP to revamp the deposit contract used for validator staking as part of preparations for potential quantum computing threats, Decrypt reported. The proposal would expand support for validator public keys from the current 48-byte limit to as much as 8,192 bytes, allowing Ethereum to adopt quantum-resistant cryptographic methods in the future. It also includes a function to permanently halt new deposits using the current BLS signature scheme. The specific quantum-resistant signature method is set to be determined in a separate future EIP, while the current proposal remains a draft under review.
