South Korea petition to delay crypto tax by 2 years nears 50% support threshold

September 01, 2026, 12:10 PM
A National Assembly public petition calling for a two-year delay to crypto taxation has reached 48% of the 50,000-signature threshold required for referral to parliamentary committees. The petition, filed on Aug. 17 on the National Assembly’s public consent platform, argues that crypto taxation would amount to a policy that reduces taxes rather than raises additional revenue, and points to a sharp drop in corporate tax payments by exchanges including Dunamu. It also stresses that most investors are posting losses and that pressing ahead with taxation while South Korean crypto-related companies face operating difficulties would risk alienating young voters and depriving them of opportunities. The petition’s signature collection period began on Aug. 21 and runs through Sept. 20.
