U.S. SEC proposes overhaul of transfer agent rules, opening door to tokenized securities
September 01, 2026, 4:39 PM
The U.S. SEC has proposed updates to modernize registration and reporting requirements for securities transfer agents, the biggest such rule overhaul since the 1970s, according to Crypto Briefing.
The proposal formally seeks industry feedback on how blockchain-based recordkeeping and distributed ledger technology should be reflected in current rules. Crypto Briefing said the move is significant for the crypto market because the SEC is directly addressing tokenization and seeking input on how the role of transfer agents should evolve as securities trading moves on-chain.
