Mexico seizes 300 crypto mining machines over alleged power theft

Mexican federal prosecutors, the navy and Puebla state police seized 300 cryptocurrency mining machines from a mining site that allegedly drew electricity illegally from a federal hydroelectric facility, Decrypt reported. Transformers, medium-voltage power equipment and a satellite internet antenna were also seized. Local media identified the confiscated equipment as GPUs, which suggests the operation may have mined cryptocurrencies other than BTC that are typically mined with graphics cards. While cryptocurrency mining itself is legal in Mexico, prosecutors are preparing to pursue electricity theft charges, and authorities are also investigating whether assets produced at the site were used to launder criminal proceeds.
