U.S. Treasury secretary says bond market remains healthy as buyback totals $5.19B
September 10, 2026, 10:47 PM
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed concerns after the 10-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level since 2023, saying the bond market remains in very good shape, Walter Bloomberg said on X. Bessent also said a $5.19 billion Treasury buyback on Sept. 10 came in below the $6 billion maximum because holders of long-dated Treasuries were reluctant to sell.
The Treasury had previously raised the cap on long-term bond buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation, and the market had expected the first purchase to total $5 billion to $6 billion.
