Buterin unveils 2030 Ethereum roadmap centered on cryptographic world computer

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined a sweeping architectural overhaul in a blog post aimed at turning Ethereum into a cryptographic world computer by 2030, combining blockchain infrastructure with modern cryptography. Buterin said the "Hegota" upgrade set for next year would be the last fork under the current model, after which the protocol redesign would shift toward advanced technologies including recursive STARKs, automated formal verification and quantum-resistant cryptography. Under the plan, nodes would no longer need to re-execute all data directly, instead relying on PeerDAS data sampling and ZK-SNARK proof verification to maximize both processing speed and privacy. By 2030, when the overhaul is expected to be complete, Ethereum’s block production, or slot, time is projected to be shortened to four to eight seconds, while finality is expected to reach eight to 32 seconds. Buterin added parallel processing and off-chain signature aggregation under EIP-8288 would help position decentralized networks as hybrid infrastructure that improves their own performance and scalability, rather than simply raising costs.
