South Korea lawmakers urged to review voting-right curbs for crypto exchange owners

October 08, 2026, 5:00 AM
South Korea’s National Assembly Research Service said limits on the voting rights of major shareholders in cryptocurrency exchanges could affect constitutional property rights and corporate freedom, and should be assessed by weighing the public interest gained through regulation against the private interests being restricted. The body made the comment in materials on voting-right restrictions for major shareholders of crypto exchanges sent to Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-kyu, according to Newsis. It also pointed to major jurisdictions including the EU and Singapore, noting they rely on fitness reviews for major shareholders and ex post supervision rather than uniform equity caps.
