ENS Labs proposes halting new .eth registrations on ENSv1 as ENSv2 rolls out
October 12, 2026, 7:43 AM
ENS Labs has proposed introducing ENSv2 on the Ethereum mainnet and halting new .eth domain registrations on ENSv1, according to Crypto Briefing.
If approved, new domains could be registered only on ENSv2. Existing ENSv1 domains could continue to be renewed without migration, while expired domains could be re-registered only on ENSv2.
Ahead of the ENSv2 rollout, ENS Labs plans to reflect ownership data for existing domains in ENSv2 and transfer all ENSv2 administrative authority to ENS DAO after the service launches. ENSv2 is an upgraded version that improves subdomain management and permission settings, and its post-expiration renewal grace period is 28 days, shorter than ENSv1’s 90 days. The proposal requires approval through an ENS DAO vote to take effect.
