Bitcoin miners need $50B for AI shift as financing costs diverge

Bitcoin mining companies face a roughly $50 billion financing gap as they push to convert operations to AI and HPC infrastructure, Cointelegraph reported. The issue has become more acute as lenders apply stricter reviews to data center completion prospects and contract structures, widening borrowing-cost gaps across companies.
At IREN, GPU loan rates rose from the 6% range in June to the 9% range in August, while Cipher gave up a 5.4% equity stake in exchange for a lease guarantee from Google, increasing the risk of shareholder dilution. According to VanEck and BlocksBridge data, major miners including IREN ($21.1 billion), Riot ($7.2 billion), and Hive ($4.6 billion) are showing signs of significant funding strain, making capital-raising capacity a key factor in corporate survival going forward.
