Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said public-key cryptography will likely remain in use, though it may require one or two additional upgrades, including raising parameters tied to cryptographic keys, according to Wu Blockchain. Speaking at the Network State Conference 2026, Buterin compared the process to Y2K and said cryptography may need one or two rounds of upgrades. He added that cybersecurity faces a similar situation, with challenges still to be addressed, though he remains optimistic over the long term.
