Coinbase urges early preparation for Bitcoin quantum-risk migration

October 13, 2026, 3:29 PM
Coinbase has published a technical discussion paper on preparing Bitcoin for potential quantum-computing threats, urging the network to begin migration planning as soon as possible. The exchange said Bitcoin should respond proactively to possible cryptographic risks from quantum computers in the future. Coinbase said a quantum-resistant Bitcoin upgrade cannot be solved simply by choosing a new quantum-resistant signature algorithm, adding that multiple factors must be considered together, including block-space constraints, full-node verification capacity, institutional asset custody requirements, compatibility with retail wallets, and how to handle funds that cannot be migrated. Coinbase also stressed the migration could take years and said preparations should be completed before any quantum-computing threat becomes a reality.
