German airports group warns of more cancellations, fare hikes amid fuel shortage

May 10, 2026, 3:50 AM
Ralph Beisel, CEO of the German Airports Association (ADV), warned in an interview with the German daily Die Welt that a persistent shortage of jet fuel could make further flight cancellations and ticket price increases unavoidable. Beisel stated he is concerned about a rise in cancellations, particularly for low-cost carrier routes and destinations with less tourism. He noted that in the best-case scenario for this year, passenger numbers would only hold at their current levels. In the worst-case scenario, he projected that some airports could see their operational capacity fall by 10%, which would affect 20 million passengers if extrapolated across all airports.
