Germany's far-right AfD overtakes CDU in polls after Iran war criticism

May 12, 2026, 4:11 AM
According to poll tracking data from the Financial Times, Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has seen a surge in support after it began criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump's war with Iran. The party's approval rating has climbed from 25% to 27% since March, pushing it ahead of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The AfD, which is classified as an extremist party, is capitalizing on soaring fuel prices and voter dissatisfaction with the government. It has also advocated for resuming imports of low-cost energy from Russia. Shortly after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla of Görlitz in eastern Germany expressed extreme disappointment with Trump, stating the president could trigger a third world war. Another party leader, Alice Weidel, criticized the war in Iran as unplanned and reckless.
