Audius Achieves Token Listing On India’s CoinSwitch

Markets·May 04, 2023, 12:08 AM

Audius, a decentralized music streaming platform which is attempting to cut intermediaries out of the music business, took a major leap forward in the Asian market on Wednesday, scoring a listing of its native $AUDIO token on Indian crypto exchange, CoinSwitch.

In announcing the token going live on the platform CoinSwitch encouraged platform users to “trade $AUDIO today and support independent artists worldwide.” Founded in the United States in 2018 by Stanford University graduates Forrest Browning and Roneil Rumberg, the project launched its $AUDIO token in 2020.

The token commenced trading on top tier global crypto exchanges shortly afterwards. In terms of listings on Asian exchanges, $AUDIO can be traded on DigitFinex Global, Bitrue and BingX in Singapore, HitBTC and Hotbit in Hong Kong and Tokocrypto and INDODAX in Indonesia. While it is already listed on WazirX, India’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, the project will welcome another Indian listing via CoinSwitch given a market that ranks sixth in the world in terms of crypto ownership, with a backdrop of a population of 1.4 billion.

Web3 with a Web2 UX

Audius has taken a different approach than most other crypto projects. From the outset, its founders have focused on giving the platform the look and feel of a Web2 streaming service. Audius decided to embed its non-custodial wallet Hedgehog into the user login process.

The strategy has been to make the UX as customer friendly and intuitive as possible in order to aid user on-boarding. There have been trade-offs in taking this approach and with that, the project advises users to keep only a small amount of the $AUDIO token within the Hedgehog wallet. When Hedgehog was launched in 2019, a project blog post proclaimed that “decentralization doesn’t have to come at the expense of user experience.”

TikTok integration

Earlier this year, the Web3 streaming service integrated TikTok, allowing platform users to create accounts simply by linking their TikTok profiles. Additionally, the integration meant that users could share their Audius songs in the TikTok videos they produced.

In late January, the $AUDIO token jumped 70% in a matter of hours once it became known that Coinbase planned to list the token on January 26. While a CoinSwitch listing is a significant milestone for the project in the Indian market, naturally it doesn’t compare with the volume that a global exchange listing on Coinbase can bring. At the time of publication, the $AUDIO token was trading at $0.29.

For its part, CoinSwitch has experienced many of the ups and downs that this nascent industry could possibly deliver. In August 2022, five properties associated with the crypto exchange were searched by India’s Enforcement Directorate on the grounds of suspected contravention of India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Founded in 2017 by Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni and Vimal Sagar Tiwari, the firm has attracted investment and backing from Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase Ventures, Tiger Global Management and Paradigm.

Dubai’s VARA grants WadzPay ‘initial approval’ of trading license

Dubai’s VARA grants WadzPay ‘initial approval’ of trading licenseIn the latest demonstration of the emirate’s crypto-friendly credentials, Dubai regulator, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), has granted an “Initial Approval” license to WadzPay.WadzPay was founded in 2018 in Singapore as a business-to-business (B2B) technology firm that concentrates its efforts on enabling digital asset-based transaction processing and settlement. This licensing approval is a significant step forward for the startup, as it inches closer to obtaining a full-fledged Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license.Photo by Paul MARSAN on UnsplashGearing up for service roll-outWith this approval in hand, WadzPay is gearing up to offer a range of virtual asset services, specifically under the forthcoming VASP License for Transfer and Settlement, as well as Broker-Dealer trading activities. That said, the current VARA license places certain restrictions on WadzPay’s offerings. While WadzPay is known for providing a wide array of services to businesses (B2B) and individual users through its B2B2C platform, the “Initial Approval” license limits its scope to only a subset of its virtual asset products and services.Flurry of approvalsDubai has taken center stage in the realm of crypto-friendly jurisdictions, granting a flurry of operational licenses to numerous crypto firms and exchanges in recent months. The regulatory framework in Dubai is underpinned by robust guidelines for VASPs. To operate fully within this framework, crypto firms must navigate a meticulous three-tier licensing process, starting with provisional approval, followed by a minimal viable product (MVP) license, culminating in a total market product license. One of the recent beneficiaries of VARA’s approvals is Backpack, a virtual currency wallet provider. Last month, Backpack received its VASP license, allowing the introduction of the Backpack Exchange to the market. However, similar to WadzPay’s situation, Backpack’s license comes with certain limitations. It permits the offering of crypto exchange services within Dubai but restricts the rollout of other virtual asset services. The Backpack Exchange sets itself apart with advanced features, including zero-knowledge (ZK) proof-of-reserves, multi-party computation (MPC) for secure custody and lightning-fast order execution capabilities.Nomura portfolio company approvalsKomainu, a collaborative venture involving financial heavyweights like Nomura, CoinShares and Ledger, is another notable success story. After a diligent licensing journey, Komainu secured its full operating license from VARA, approximately 10 months after obtaining its MVP license in November 2022.Laser Digital, a crypto division under the vast umbrella of financial giant Nomura, also earned its operational license from VARA in August. Through its dedicated subsidiary, Laser Digital Middle East FZE, based conveniently in Dubai, Nomura has showcased its VASP license. The permit enables the firm to offer a suite of services, including brokerage, virtual asset management and investment offerings within the emirate.Notably, Laser Digital’s licensure followed closely on the heels of Binance, the global crypto exchange. Binance secured its operational minimum viable product (MVP) license from VARA, paving the way for providing crypto exchange and virtual asset broker-dealer services within the region. This flurry of licensing activities and approvals in Dubai is suggestive of the emirate’s commitment to fostering a progressive and regulated crypto environment.

Dunamu reports Q3 slump amid interest rate hikes and economic slowdown

Dunamu reports Q3 slump amid interest rate hikes and economic slowdownDunamu, the operator of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, posted a lackluster performance in this year’s Q3 due to a decrease in trading volume caused by ongoing interest rate hikes and an economic downturn.Photo by Алекс Арцибашев on UnsplashLagging performanceAccording to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Dunamu’s consolidated operating revenue in Q3 was KRW 193 billion (approximately $150 million), marking a 29% decrease from the same period a year earlier (KRW 271.9 billion). Operating income came in at KRW 101.8 billion, and net profit was KRW 29.5 billion, down 39.6% and 81.6% from the same period last year, respectively. This underwhelming financial performance reflects the sluggish crypto market amid the nation’s economic downturn and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes. The decrease in the exchange’s net profit in particular can be attributed to a loss in the valuation of crypto assets due to crypto price declines compared to the previous quarter.Positive outlookHowever, with the expected approval of the spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) next year and the next Bitcoin halving, the market outlook is expected to improve gradually. Despite the current market conditions, Dunamu plans to continuously promote the mainstream adoption of blockchain services and explore new business ventures.“We will make efforts to revitalize the blockchain ecosystem and create an advanced investment environment,” Dunamu said. “We will strive to offer innovative services building on our unique technological capabilities.”
