Philippines leading charge in Asia amid global bitcoin payment surge

Markets·January 09, 2024, 2:47 AM

Bitcoin's global merchant acceptance witnessed a substantial surge, growing by 174% throughout 2023, with the Philippines proving itself in leading the way within the Asian region.

Region facing regulatory restrictions

That’s according to BTC Map, a provider of bitcoin merchant mapping services. The data, derived from BTC Map's open-source mapping data via OpenStreetMap, revealed that the number of venues accepting bitcoin payments surged from 2,207 at the beginning of the year to 6,126 by the year's end. This diverse array of businesses included restaurants, bars, shops and various services.

The expansion of bitcoin vendors is a global phenomenon, with concentrations notably observed in Europe, the United States and Latin America. The Philippines stands out in Asia with hundreds of vendors, while regulatory restrictions in East Asia, especially China, have limited adoption.

While it's great to see a high level of direct adoption among Filipino merchants, it's easy to understand why this level of adoption hasn’t been matched within Asia’s largest market. China has had a long-standing ban on cryptocurrency trading, mining or its use as a means of payment. Despite the ban, it appears that crypto trading is still alive and well in China, although beneath the surface.

With mining too, while the sector shrank considerably once a ban was imposed, there is believed to be a significant ongoing level of bitcoin mining occurring still within China’s borders. However, when it comes to vendors, this is likely to be an activity that is far too visible to the authorities and with that, China’s 1.4 billion citizens are not getting the opportunity to buy goods and services with the world’s leading cryptocurrency.

Compounding matters, the Chinese authorities have been working diligently on a myriad of projects to bring about day-to-day retail use of the country’s central bank digital currency, the digital yuan. Those efforts are not likely to be aligned with an accommodation of or tolerance of bitcoin payments.

The increase in merchant listings showcased a slight decline from the peak in September, which reached 6,590 merchants. BTC Map's platform allows businesses and users to tag locations accepting bitcoin payments, with the rise in numbers potentially attributed to increased user contributions to the database.

This surge in bitcoin adoption globally occurred against the backdrop of the cryptocurrency's price volatility throughout the year. Despite potential limitations in data collection due to its reliance on volunteer contributions, the overall trend indicates a growing acceptance of bitcoin.

Ongoing challenges to adoption

A panel of bitcoin leaders at the Plan B conference in October discussed the challenges and opportunities of global bitcoin adoption. Notably, they highlighted the difficulty of onboarding new users and merchants, particularly in diverse cultural contexts. In El Salvador, where bitcoin is legal tender, obstacles persist in convincing merchants to accept bitcoin payments.

Geographically, concentrations of bitcoin-accepting vendors were more prevalent in Central and South America, while Africa and Asia demonstrated fewer such establishments. The United States and Europe led in the global count of crypto-friendly merchants.

The panel stressed the importance of education in overcoming these challenges, emphasizing the need for user-friendly applications to facilitate mainstream adoption, moving away from complex technologies. As bitcoin continues its global expansion, the industry recognizes the vital role education and user-friendly solutions play in fostering broader acceptance.

Bitmain Planning Mining Equipment Support For Aleo Blockchain

Bitmain Planning Mining Equipment Support For Aleo BlockchainBitmain, the leading Beijing-headquartered crypto mining rig manufacturer, is set to bolster the proof-of-work (PoW) blockchain network of Aleo with its upcoming Antminer release. The firm announced its intentions via a social media post which was published on WeChat on Monday. The move follows Bitmain’s recent introductions of Filecoin and Kaspa mining machines and its latest series of Bitcoin miners.Photo by RDNE Stock project on PexelsEnhanced privacy through zk proofsBitmain plans to unveil a miner compatible with the forthcoming Aleo blockchain network which is currently in testnet mode. Aleo’s PoW blockchain promises to bring enhanced privacy through zero-knowledge (zk) proofs while retaining programmability. Zk proofs represent a cryptographic advancement insofar as they can verify data while it remains encrypted and undisclosed to the verifying party. The blockchain network adopts a statically typed programming language inspired by Rust, known as Leo.Aleo has been gaining significant attention in the crypto space, much like other venture capital-backed layer 1 blockchains, including Solana, Aptos, and NEAR, before their respective debuts. In April 2021, Aleo’s team successfully secured $28 million in a Series A funding round, with Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) leading the way.Aleo’s journey reached new heights in February 2022 when its Series B funding round raised a substantial $200 million, pushing the project into unicorn status. This funding round was jointly led by Softbank Vision Fund 2 and Kora Management LP, with participation from a16z, Tiger Global, Sea Capital, Slow Ventures, and Samsung Next.Latest in series of product launchesBitmain’s announcement is part of a series of product launches in recent months. In July, the company unveiled a mining rig designed for Filecoin (FIL). The following month marked the shipment of Bitmain’s Kaspa (KAS) mining machines. Shortly after the Kaspa deliveries, Bitmain revealed plans for an August release of a Monero (XMR) mining rig. Most recently, Bitmain introduced two next-generation Bitcoin (BTC) miners from the S21 series. The Chinese crypto mining equipment manufacturer has faced financial challenges in recent times. In April, it emerged that the company had been fined by the Chinese authorities for tax irregularities.Earlier this month, reports suggested that the company was experiencing liquidity issues. It failed to pay some of its employees although it later resolved the matter. Reports of staff payment difficulties surfaced two weeks ago. Arising out of that episode, the company subsequently fired three employees for posting information about salary payment issues on social media.Nevertheless, the firm managed to secure two contracts with US-based mining operations following those reports. In these contracts, Bitmain sold a combined 5.8 exahash per second (EH/s) of its new S21 Antminers to Iris Energy and Cleanspark. In September, Bitmain finalized a deal with troubled crypto miner Core Scientific that will see the firm supply the restructured company with 27,000 Bitcoin miners. The company has been blighted by internal conflicts going back a number of years between co-founders Jihan Wu and Zhan Ketuan. Subsequently Wu went on to found Singapore-headquartered crypto cloud mining platform Bitdeer.

Bithumb records declining performance in Q3 amid market challenges and interest rate hikes

Bithumb records declining performance in Q3 amid market challenges and interest rate hikesBithumb Korea, the operator of the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb, reported an on-year decline in performance compared to last year, driven by deteriorating market conditions. According to data from the Korean Financial Supervisory Service on Tuesday (local time), the exchange recorded a net loss of KRW 10.6 billion (approximately $8.1 million) and operating losses of KRW 650 million in Q3. Its revenue amounted to KRW 32.4 billion, a 53% decrease from the same period last year.Photo by Алекс Арцибашев on UnsplashFalling figuresBithumb had recorded KRW 28.8 billion and KRW 32.6 billion in operating and net profits, respectively, in Q3 last year, but both of these figures turned into a deficit for the same period this year. This worsened performance can be attributed to weakened investor sentiment amid the U.S. Federal Reserve’s ongoing interest rate hikes and a decrease in trading volumes. However, just last month, these conditions have begun drastically improving as excitement mounts for the potential approval of a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).Murky futureNevertheless, concerns about Bithumb’s profitability in Q4 are arising following the exchange’s zero trading fee policy that it implemented last month in a bid to regain its market share, especially because the primary source of revenue for crypto exchanges is trading fees. Bithumb had previously charged trading fees of between 0.04% and 0.25%.“We will do our best to enhance the competitiveness of our services to boost our market share,” Bithumb said. “At the same time, we will enhance the transparency of our operations through efforts such as our recent preparations for an initial public offering (IPO) and improvements in corporate governance.”The exchange’s upcoming IPO is part of efforts to be listed on Korea’s KOSDAQ stock exchange by 2025, which would make it the first virtual asset company to do so. It had previously considered preparing for an IPO in 2020 but suspended plans due to a lack of clear regulations for virtual assets. But with the upcoming Virtual Asset User Protection Bill set to take effect next July, Bithumb decided that the current regulatory landscape would be conducive to an IPO.Should it take effect, this IPO is also expected to pose a challenge to Upbit, which currently holds over 80% of the country’s market share. However, there is still a considerable amount of uncertainty shrouding this development, as financial authorities are maintaining a wary stance towards virtual assets.
