SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

Web3 & Enterprise·February 13, 2024, 2:00 AM

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy.

SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible.

The AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy

According to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain.

The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.

Price surge

In response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023.

The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network.

AUS and SUI blockchain education initiatives

This latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students.

The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students.

SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.

China establishes metaverse working group with Chinese tech giants

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has stepped into the realm of the metaverse by forming a working group tasked with setting standards for the burgeoning technology.Photo by Li Yang on UnsplashChinese corporate participationThe announcement, made on Friday, revealed that the working group would comprise representatives from the government, academic institutions and major corporations. In its statement, MIIT explained that the establishment of the metaverse working group aligns with the nation's emphasis on industrial development within the technology sector. Notably, the group will feature key figures from major Chinese tech corporations, including Huawei, Ant Group, ZET, Tencent, Baidu, NetEase, Sense Time and others. Public feedback on the selection of group members is invited until Feb. 18, although the specific areas of focus for the group are not detailed in the document. Initial in-roadsThe working group’s headline tech participants have all made some initial in-roads into metaverse technology. Baidu established its own metaverse project, XiRang, in 2021. Late last year it partnered with Qualcomm on the use of extended reality (XR) technology for use on a new metaverse platform. Huawei is paying attention to the promising metaverse space by building up a catalog of metaverse-related patents. Like Baidu, Tencent is focusing on developing XR technology with metaverse development in mind. Last year NetEase collaborated with a Chinese liquor brand to launch a winery-themed metaverse, while issuing NFTs linked to liquor bottles. Establishing metaverse standardsChina has been contemplating the formulation of metaverse standards for some time. In September 2023, MIIT advocated for the creation of a dedicated working group to address the ongoing challenges in metaverse technology. The government's overarching objective is to ensure the healthy and orderly development of the metaverse industry through standardization and guidance, reducing redundant investment costs and fostering collaborative forces for industrial development. Analysts from JPMorgan foresee a potential uptick in the value of Chinese tech stocks if the metaverse gains traction in the country. According to their analysis, Chinese web giants like Tencent and NetEase stand to benefit significantly from metaverse development. Even non-web companies such as China Mobile, Sony and Agora could witness positive impacts should the technology gain widespread adoption. In fact, China Mobile led the development of a metaverse industry alliance in China in 2023. Regional developmentIn a December document, MIIT outlined plans to formulate strategy documents clarifying the development path of Web3.Last year, several local governments in China committed to the development of the metaverse industry. Sichuan, a province once known as a crypto mining hub, aims to reach a market size of 250 billion yuan ($35.1 billion) in the metaverse industry by 2025. Last May, the city of Zhengzhou announced policy proposals to support metaverse companies. The same month, the province of Henan established a $21.7 million fund to support metaverse-related projects. The following month, an initiative was established in Nanjing to nurture metaverse development. Additionally, Shandong province has plans to grow its metaverse-related initiatives to achieve a market size of 150 billion yuan by 2025.

BitKeep Changes Name to Bitget Wallet Following Acquisition

BitKeep Changes Name to Bitget Wallet Following AcquisitionContinuing the trend set by industry giants like Binance, KuCoin, and OKX, cross-chain wallet provider BitKeep has undergone a transformation, rebranding itself as Bitget Wallet. This strategic shift comes on the heels of the wallet’s acquisition by the prominent Seychelles-headquartered crypto exchange, which acquired a controlling stake for $30 million in March.Photo by Jon Tyson on UnsplashBitget Swap unveiledThe rebranding announcement, made on August 10, coincides with the unveiling of Bitget Swap, a novel cross-chain swap mechanism integrated into the wallet. This innovative feature draws liquidity from a network of approximately 100 decentralized exchanges spanning across 20 chains. The move positions Bitget Wallet as a versatile platform catering to traders seeking fluidity and efficiency across diverse cryptocurrencies.Bitget Wallet users are set to benefit from an enticing proposition as the exchange merges its offerings. A collective Bitget User Protection Fund, boasting a substantial $360 million pool, has been established. The fund is anchored by 6,500 Bitcoin, ensuring robust safeguards against security incidents. This initiative finds its origins in the wake of the FTX exchange collapse last November, with the fund’s value boosted by a subsequent $60 million capital appreciation due to the rally in Bitcoin prices. The synergy between the two businesses has already borne fruit for Bitget. Last month, it clarified that it had surpassed 20 million users, with the wallet integration believed to be responsible for a large part of that user growth.Growing painsBitKeep’s past wasn’t without its challenges. A security breach occurred in December when the wallet’s Android Package Kit (APK) was compromised by malware, causing losses of around $8 million among users who had installed the compromised package. In a commendable move, the company fully compensated the affected users on March 29, signaling its commitment to rectifying such setbacks.Moka Han, Chief Operating Officer of Bitget Wallet, underscored the wallet’s security-focused approach. Han revealed that cross-chain bridges are subject to stringent third-party security audits by notable entities like SlowMist and CertiK before deployment. Rigorous post-deployment monitoring further guarantees a resilient security environment.Payment channel integrationIn its recent evolution, Bitget Wallet has integrated five stable payment channels, including Banxa, Simplex, Alchemy Pay, MoonPay, and FaTPay. These integrations empower users to conveniently purchase cryptocurrencies within the wallet using methods such as credit cards, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. Additionally, the wallet has introduced a peer-to-peer marketplace, characterized by comprehensive security measures that protect both buyers and sellers.Bitget Wallet’s appeal extends far and wide across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, boasting an impressive user base exceeding 10 million individuals. This figure constitutes nearly half of MetaMask’s user count, signifying the wallet’s considerable popularity. The company didn’t allow the rebrand milestone to pass without taking the opportunity to further promote its offering. On Thursday, it commenced a “Mystery Box Airdrop” event, offering new Bitget Wallet users the opportunity to claim individual rewards of up to 1,000 USDT.Biget’s wallet integration is in line with the changing landscape of crypto exchanges generally, with other prominent players such as OKX, KuCoin, and Binance having also ventured into the realm of self-custody wallets, enhancing their service offerings beyond traditional exchange operations.
