The roster of speakers includes renowned figures such as Tom Teman, Product Manager at Ethereum Foundation; Roger Ver, Founder of Bitcoin.com; and Wally Yu, Solutions Architect at Chainlink Labs. Korean speakers, such as Sehyeon Oh, Executive Vice President of telecommunications giant SK Telecom, are also set to attend.

Empowering Korea’s blockchain landscape

Since its inception in 2018, UDC has grown to become Korea’s central blockchain conference. Conceived as a means to contribute to the domestic blockchain ecosystem without focusing on generating profit, the conference has consistently garnered praise for its in-depth presentations from global experts and a wide variety of sessions.

Under the theme coined “All That Blockchain,” this year’s conference is open to anyone interested in blockchain, Dunamu said. The “D” in UDC stands for various keywords related to blockchain, including digital assets, decentralization, and developers. However, the focus of the conference has evolved beyond just technology, now encompassing areas such as policy, finance, technology, culture, and societal trends.

Event details

The conference will be conducted in a hybrid — both online and offline — format, allowing a higher level of participation without the constraints of time and place. Though it will be hosted at the Grand Walkerhill Seoul hotel, anyone anywhere can tune in live through the official UDC YouTube channel. Simultaneous interpretation will also be provided in Korean and English.

Dunamu will kick off registrations for both online and offline attendance starting from 10:00 AM KST on September 11. Due to the limited venue capacity, offline tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Hong Kong Authorities Block Access to JPEX Amid Ongoing Investigation

Hong Kong Authorities Block Access to JPEX Amid Ongoing InvestigationDubai-headquartered crypto exchange JPEX has been under intense scrutiny in Hong Kong over the course of the past week due to issues experienced by Hong Kong users in withdrawing funds from the platform. In the most recent twist to the saga, authorities in the Chinese autonomous territory have now blocked access to the JPEX website and mobile application.Photo by Tao Yuan on UnsplashCutting off service accessThe firm published a statement on Wednesday, outlining this latest sanction, while protesting that the move had been unreasonable. It appears that the authorities requested local telecommunications providers to block access to the company’s online platform. The measure follows ongoing enforcement actions initiated by local law enforcement agencies, which have led to the detention of at least 11 individuals and the seizure of assets related to the case. The scandal has also had implications for the crypto sector as a whole, as local regulators are now looking once more at regulation and determining if there’s a need to tighten regulatory measures as a consequence of JPEX’s failings in Hong Kong.VPN recommendationIn its statement, JPEX stated:“Since September 13, 2023, the SFC [Securities and Futures Commission] has suddenly made a series of accusations against our platform’s operating model and promotional methods, which we vehemently resent as they were made without investigation or review.”In response to the blocking of their platform, JPEX has encouraged users to utilize virtual private network (VPN) services to access their services. The exchange sought to reassure its user base, stating: “Here, we strongly reiterate that, even in the face of such oppression and unfair treatment, our platform will continue to operate as usual. Users can log into our mobile application or operate on our web version using VPN applications like Surfshark.”The investigation into JPEX was initiated following warnings from the SFC regarding false or misleading statements made on social media by crypto influencers and the trading platform relative to a trading license application. On Sunday, JPEX announced that it had suspended certain operations and increased withdrawal fees due to an ongoing liquidity crisis, triggering an influx of complaints from users. As of Monday night, the police had received a total of 1,641 complaints, with claims amounting to approximately HK$1.19 billion ($152 million) in assets involved, as revealed during a police briefing on Tuesday.DAO Stakeholders Dividend PlanIn response to these developments, JPEX unveiled plans for a “DAO Stakeholders Dividend Plan.” Under this initiative, JPEX users will have the opportunity to convert their assets on the platform into DAO stakeholder dividends at a 1:1 ratio. The exchange intends to distribute 49% of the DAO Stakeholder dividends, with an estimated total value of approximately 400,000,000 USDT available for subscription and conversion. Additionally, JPEX plans to offer repurchase options one year and two years after the program’s launch.New users who subscribe to the DAO stakeholder dividends will enjoy double payouts, and they will not be required to bear all the operational responsibilities of the platform. This move is seen as an attempt by JPEX to address the concerns of its user base and navigate the challenges it currently faces. The situation surrounding JPEX remains fluid, with ongoing investigations and regulatory actions continuing to unfold.

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing Businesses

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing BusinessesBithumb Korea, the operator of a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, has been streamlining its businesses in response to its ongoing struggle to generate profits.Photo by Tim Mossholder on PexelsAccording to a report by local news outlet Business Watch, Bithumb Systems, a tech solution subsidiary of Bithumb Korea, has recently ceased operations. Bithumb System was launched in March of last year with the aim of advancing blockchain and exchange technology. However, due to the decline in the crypto industry and challenges in profitability, the company had to undergo liquidation. An official from Bithumb Korea explained that the decision to close its tech solution arm was made in order to prioritize improving the competence of the exchange amidst the changing landscape of domestic and foreign markets.Other affiliates of Bithumb Korea are also facing difficulties. For instance, Bithumb Live, an e-commerce platform jointly established by Bithumb Korea and content production firm Bucket Studio, has been on hiatus since October last year. The platform incurred a net loss of 10 billion KRW ($7.75 million). Bithumb Korea, holding 37.5% of Bithumb Live’s shares, invested 6 billion KRW ($4.65 million) into the platform in 2021. Bithumb Korea recognizes these investment losses using the equity method.Additionally, Bithumb META, despite raising the highest amount of funds among its sister affiliates, has encountered challenges in making much progress since its establishment last year. Its NFT marketplace, Naemo Market, is still without a mobile application, and the introduction of its metaverse platform is still pending. Although Bithumb META managed to attract 9 billion KRW in investments last March from esteemed companies such as LG CNS, CJ OliveNetworks, and SK Square, it incurred a loss of 7 billion KRW ($5.4 million) in 2022.Furthermore, earlier this month, it was reported that the exchange closed its research center due to a decline in trading volume, despite its importance in assisting investors to make better-informed decisions.A representative from Bithumb stated that the company is actively seeking new sources of revenue through its mobile Wallet platform operator, Rotonda, and Bithumb META. However, given the market slowdown, Bithumb is now compelled to prioritize enhancing the competence of the exchange.
