Abu Dhabi Approves M2 for Crypto Services

M2, a virtual asset firm based within Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) in Abu Dhabi, has received authorization from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) to establish a multilateral crypto trading facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital.

This pivotal development, announced on Wednesday, allows M2 to provide both retail and institutional clients in the region with the capability to engage in activities such as purchasing, selling, and safeguarding digital assets, including Bitcoin.

2023 platform launch

Scheduled for a launch later in 2023, the M2 platform’s creation has been a year-long process, designed to cultivate trust, security, and integrity within the burgeoning virtual asset landscape. The company’s mission is to empower users with access to the highest level of services, including the ability to transact with cryptocurrencies using fiat currency and tap into derivative and yield offerings.

Stefan Kimmil, the CEO of M2, acknowledged the significance of this regulatory milestone:

“The process of obtaining the license is the first step on our journey, and we will remain in close dialogue with ADGM to ensure transparency around the custody of client assets.”

Kimmil also expressed M2’s commitment to maintaining the high industry standards, as the UAE solidifies its position as a global front-runner in the virtual asset realm.

Founded earlier this year, M2 claims to have a depth of credible expertise driving it, with executives having joined the firm from traditional finance giants such as Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, and Goldman Sachs.

 

Progressive regulation

The FSRA has taken a forward-thinking approach to digital asset regulation, having introduced a comprehensive framework for virtual assets in 2018. This framework has not only attracted numerous major cryptocurrency-focused companies to establish operations within its regulated financial and economic zone but has also fostered the region’s digital asset landscape.

ADGM CEO Salem Al Darei underscored the organization’s mission of driving growth and investment opportunities in the virtual asset sector: “We remain committed to enhancing Abu Dhabi’s digital asset landscape and actively supporting the diversification of our thriving economy.”

This sentiment is well-aligned with the broader vision of expanding the digital horizons of the UAE. The approval granted to M2 follows in the footsteps of significant advancements in the UAE’s cryptocurrency landscape. In November 2022, cryptocurrency exchange giant Binance secured financial services permission, bolstering its presence in the region.

Furthermore, Rain, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange that serves the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Turkey, and Pakistan, obtained regulatory approval last month to extend virtual asset brokerage and custody services to UAE residents.

The emergence of M2’s platform points to the ongoing fostering of a dynamic virtual asset ecosystem that is currently ongoing in Abu Dhabi and the UAE at a national level. As the platform prepares for its forthcoming launch, it’s seeking to usher in a new era of accessibility, sophistication, and opportunity for the growing community of retail and institutional clients seeking to engage with cryptocurrencies in the UAE.

FTX Japan Moves Towards FTX 2.0 via Hiring DriveFTX Japan, a subsidiary company of the collapsed FTX crypto exchange business, is embarking on a hiring spree to bolster its team and drive the FTX 2.0 initiative forward.News of the new recruitment initiative broke via a tweet from Seth Melamed, FTX Japan’s Chief Operations Officer. Melamed wrote: “FTX Japan is hiring! Our team is exploring the leading edge of technology including AI to develop new crypto tools, non-custodial CEX trading, Proof of Solvency, and leading crypto derivatives products.”On the firm’s careers page on its website, FTX Japan details that it is looking to hire a Flutter Engineer to work on mobile applications, customer service staff and a marketer. Ray III, had decided not to follow through with the sale of FTX Japan. Most FTX creditors have been calling for the relaunch of the exchange business, dubbed FTX 2.0. Monthly expense filings have shown that various advisors to the Unsecured Creditors Committee (UCC) and professionals working for FTX itself have been spending quite a lot of time working on that possibility.Such a relaunch has as yet not been officially confirmed. However, it is looking increasingly likely that there’s a strong commitment to advancing the FTX 2.0 initiative, and with that, FTX Japan is actively seeking new talent.A restructuring plan is expected to be filed before the end of the month. This will likely move the notion of FTX 2.0 from a matter of speculation to something more tangible. That said, even if it forms part of that plan filing, due to the cumbersome workings of the US bankruptcy process, it’s unlikely that the overall international business will be relaunched until 2024. FTX Japan is solvent and so, it could be back in operation well before then.FTT token speculationEarlier this week, a beta version of a claims filing system was put online, although not officially launched. News of this development led to speculative interest in FTX’s exchange token, FTT.On Tuesday, the token increased in value by 26% within a matter of hours. Pricing has since cooled, and at the time of publication, the token had a unit price of $1.52. Crypto certainly garners speculative interest as this price action demonstrates. It remains to be seen until further clarification is provided by the FTX Debtor and the bankruptcy court in Delaware in the United States as to whether FTT will even feature in the future plans of a restructured business.FTX was very much the standout black swan event within crypto in 2022. However, it’s clear that its story remains unfinished. In the months ahead, we’re likely to hear more about the future plans for the business, in what could become quite the redemption story.

3 UAE-based firms sign $3B tokenized real estate deal

MultiBank Group, a global financial derivatives company headquartered in Dubai, has partnered with two other United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based firms, real estate giant MAG and tokenized real-world asset (RWA)-focused blockchain infrastructure provider Mavryk, in a $3 billion tokenized real estate deal.Photo by Tierra Mallorca on UnsplashWhile a large proportion of MAG's business activities center around the Dubai real estate market, MAG Group is a multinational conglomerate with a portfolio that includes commercial and residential developments and high-end luxury real estate projects.  According to a press release published on May 1, this $3 billion deal implicates MAG’s luxury developments, such as The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Dubai and other properties located within the Keturah Resort and Keturah Reserve in the UAE’s most populous city. These properties will be tokenized and hosted on the blockchain through MultiBank.io’s regulated tokenized RWA marketplace. Mavryk will provide the necessary infrastructure, with the tokenized assets running on its blockchain network. The deal provides another indication of the growing role of tokenization, with it being the largest tokenized RWA deal to have been put together to date. The Mavryk Network testnet was launched in February, with Mavryk Network developer Mavryk Dynamics securing $5 million in funding to establish a tokenized RWA network economy. In this instance, Mavryk will provide support in terms of on-chain asset issuance and DeFi integrations. Not just a real estate dealTalal Moafaq Al Gaddah, senior executive vice chairman of MAG, said that the project “marks a milestone in broadening access to high-value developments and unlocking liquidity via blockchain.” Al Gaddah also commented on the MBG token, stating:“$MBG token provides ecosystem utility, including trading discounts, early access to properties, and a deflationary buyback-and-burn model.” MBG is a MultiBank utility token which features deflationary tokenomics. It will be used to enable staking and lower trading fees. The token is scheduled to be launched on June 2. MultiBank.io Founder and CEO Zak Taher highlighted the importance of the token launch alongside this tokenized real estate deal. He stated:“This isn’t just a real estate deal — it is a flagship use case for the $MBG token. By enabling seamless access to $3B in tokenized property, MultiBank becomes the bridge between regulated finance and next-generation investment infrastructure.” Dual utilityAl Gaddah referred to the duality of the tokenized real estate offering:“Tokenized assets issued by MultiBank will have dual utility. Within the MultiBank Group, they can be used as collateral for derivatives, creating a seamless bridge between traditional finance and tokenized assets.” RWA tokenization has been gaining momentum within the UAE recently. It emerged last month that the Dubai Land Department (DLD), a government agency responsible for the registration of real estate in Dubai, had signed an agreement with local regulator the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) to integrate tokenized real estate within existing systems.  Around the same timeframe, blockchain technology firm Serenity signed a partnership with Dubai’s MTA Real Estate to develop a tokenized real estate platform. Last year RWA-focused layer-1 blockchain project MANTRA Chain announced that it would tokenize $500 million in real estate assets in Dubai.

The move will pit the British bank directly against global crypto exchange Binance in key Asian markets, specifically Singapore and Japan.Rene Michau, the Global Head of Digital Assets at Standard Chartered, emphasized what he considers to be the bank’s unique advantage in the digital asset space, stating:“As regulated banks, we have a fairly deep infrastructure around risk, conduct compliance, and the activities that go along with crypto assets.”This solid infrastructure includes established risk frameworks, governance structures, and compliance tools that Standard Chartered is keen to bring into the cryptocurrency sphere, thus making it an attractive option for its clients.Zodia Custody and Zodia MarketsStandard Chartered’s substantial involvement in the cryptocurrency market is channeled through its majority ownership of Zodia Custody, responsible for safeguarding digital assets, and Zodia Markets, a crypto exchange tailored for institutional clients.Both entities have been making significant progress in bringing their offerings to market in recent months. Zodia Custody recently launched its services in Singapore, offering a secure solution for financial institutions to manage their crypto holdings. Last month it launched a crypto staking product targeted at institutional clients.In the same month, Zodia Markets achieved in-principle approval to trade as a broker-dealer in the United Arab Emirates. Zodia Custody has also been successful in the UAE, launching its crypto custodian service in Dubai in May.Japan and SingaporeThis concerted effort by Standard Chartered follows a broader trend where traditional financial institutions, such as DBS Group Holdings in Singapore, are entering the cryptocurrency market, capitalizing on the challenges faced by younger crypto players in proving their credibility.Binance rebranded its Binance Custody unit as Ceffu and expanded its offerings for corporate customers in Singapore. While Binance asserts the independence of Ceffu, the exact nature of their capital relationship remains undisclosed.A parallel competition is unfolding in Japan, where Binance Japan has entered the market and Standard Chartered’s Zodia Custody has formed a joint venture with SBI Digital Asset Holdings, targeting institutional clients.While Standard Chartered has achieved a lot through its crypto-focused subsidiaries in a short space of time, there’s always room for improvement. In June, Hong Kong’s banking regulator singled out Standard Chartered alongside HSBC, appealing to both banking groups to make greater efforts to bank crypto clients within the Chinese autonomous territory, as it looks to compete with Singapore in becoming a regional crypto hub.The cryptocurrency sector has witnessed increased scrutiny as virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ether have gained popularity. The rise of digital token exchanges, each vying for custody of assets belonging to investors who have embraced cryptocurrencies, has sparked concerns about corporate governance and security.Giants in traditional finance, like Standard Chartered, are stepping in to offer institutional investors a safer path to engage with virtual assets while leveraging the trust associated with established brands.
