Three ESG objectives

In the report, Wemade CEO Henry Chang outlined three key objectives focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. These objectives are strengthening the company’s eco-friendly practices, nurturing future minds in the blockchain industry, and establishing a transparent governance framework.

Wemade’s WEMIX 3.0 ecosystem is built on three main pillars: the global blockchain gaming platform WEMIX PLAY, the DAO-based NFT platform NILE, and the decentralized finance service WEMIX.Fi. These platforms are supported by the WEMIX token and WEMIX Dollar (WEMIX$), which are key currencies within the ecosystem. WEMIX$ is fully backed by USD Coin (USDC).

The WEMIX token is listed on more than 17 cryptocurrency exchanges, including KuCoin, Gate.io, and Bybit, according to CoinMarketCap. Meanwhile, WEMIX$ can be traded on WEMIX.Fi and centralized exchange BitMart.

Transparency initiatives

The report highlights various transparency initiatives undertaken by the company. Wemade has partnered with crypto data platform Xangle, intending to enable users to monitor the real-time circulation of the WEMIX token. The company has also established a protocol investment committee of five members to review and approve diverse projects. Furthermore, the report mentions that all of the undistributed WEMIX tokens are held by institutional custodian Ceffu (formerly known as Binance Custody) to ensure WEMIX’s stability.

According to the report, Wemade is committed to effective communication with stakeholders worldwide, including shareholders, token investors, and gamers. CEO Chang’s quarterly conferences play a significant role in unveiling the platform’s policies and answering stakeholders’ questions. Additionally, the company ensures the dissemination of information in multiple languages (Korean, English, Chinese, Spanish, and Indonesian), catering to global WEMIX token holders.

CEO Chang underlined the company’s dedication to enhancing corporate transparency and fulfilling its social responsibilities. These measures are aimed at facilitating the sustainable growth of the blockchain company.

Celebrating a Decade of Crypto in South Korea: Experts Convene to Chart the Future

Celebrating a Decade of Crypto in South Korea: Experts Convene to Chart the FutureThe MK Virtual Asset Conference, an event held in Seoul yesterday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of South Korea’s cryptocurrency industry, convened experts, politicians, and stakeholders to discuss the future of blockchain and digital assets. The conference was hosted by Maeil Business Newspaper and its blockchain subsidiary Mblock, and sponsored by cryptocurrency exchange Korbit, the Korean Securities Association, and the Korea Derivatives Association. It served as a valuable opportunity to evaluate the current state of the crypto market and explore solutions for pressing challenges.Photo by Ciaran O’Brien on UnsplashInevitable rise of blockchainOne of the distinguished speakers at the event highlighted the inevitable rise of blockchain technology. Kim Yong-beom, CEO of Hashed Open Research, the research arm of Seoul-based crypto venture capital firm Hashed, said, “Blockchain is the antithesis of the modern financial and capital system. While traditional finance possesses its own merits, it also carries substantial transaction fees and is confined within national boundaries. It is only natural that such a counterforce has emerged to address these issues.”He continued, “Given that traditional finance properly responds to blockchain technology’s rise and overcomes its limits, blockchain may lose its competitive edge. However, if traditional finance fails to do so, blockchain will not be easily dismissed.”CEO Kim also highlighted the third section named “Blueprint for the Future Monetary System” of the Bank of International Settlements’ 2023 Annual Economic Report, which was published in June. The report states, “The BIS Innovation Hub, in partnership with central banks around the world, stands at the forefront of experimentation with CBDCs and tokenization.” According to Kim, the traditionally conservative financial institution, which had previously been skeptical about blockchain-based distributed ledger technology, has now shifted its position to be more accepting of blockchain.Importance of institutional investorsDuring the conference, an academic underscored the importance of allowing institutional investors to enter the virtual asset space. Kang Hyoung-goo, an assistant professor in the Department of Finance at Hanyang University Business School, pointed out that the crypto market, when primarily driven by retail investors, tends to favor volatile assets over stable ones. Due to this inclination, more individual investors are attracted to exchanges where speculative trading is a frequent occurrence. This dynamic creates a vicious cycle, he explained.Defining digital assetsOn a different note, Lee Han-jin, a lawyer at Kim and Chang, one of the largest law firms in the country, emphasized the crucial need to establish a legal definition of digital assets. In Lee’s view, digital assets exist in the form of data on the blockchain, setting them apart from traditional assets. He argued that without a legal definition outlining the nature of these assets, they could potentially devolve into entities that mislead the public, lacking both legal reliability and trustworthiness.Political voicesPoliticians also took the stage to share their thoughts. Back Hye-ryun, a Democratic Party of Korea member, expressed in her congratulatory speech her commitment to protecting virtual asset users through legislation. Kim Jong-min, another lawmaker from the same party, underscored the unstoppable nature of the blockchain trend. Yun Chang-hyun, a lawmaker of the ruling People Power Party, mentioned that while Bitcoin couldn’t establish itself as a key currency in an anarchic manner, stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are now positioned to fill that role.Regulatory considerationsMeanwhile, Kim So-young, Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Commission, stressed the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the societal impact of cryptocurrencies and how governments should oversee them. He emphasized that the Korean government aims to establish a balanced framework to facilitate the responsible development of digital assets. Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of collaborating with major economies due to the global nature of virtual assets.

SBI and TradeFinex establish 'SBI XDC Network APAC'

Japanese financial services company SBI Holdings has successfully established "SBI XDC Network APAC" in Japan, following through on an intended joint venture with TradeFinex, the driving force behind the XDC Network.Photo by William Warby on UnsplashJV company formationAt the end of September, the two companies outlined the starting point of an intended collaboration. Only three months later, SBI has come back with an update, a press release published on Dec. 27, to detail the progress that has been made thus far. According to that document, the companies established joint venture corporate entity SBI XDC Network APAC Co. Ltd. on Dec. 18. Among the directors of the new company is the President of BITPoint Japan, a wholly owned subsidiary crypto exchange business of SBI. Majority stakeholderSBI will be the majority stakeholder in the venture, holding 60% of the company’s shares while Dubai-based TradeFinex will be the minor partner, with a 40% shareholding. The press release outlines that the stakeholders will “work to expand the use case using the blockchain technology of the XDC Network in global economic activities centered on trade finance and cross-border payments, not just the handling of tokens.” With that, this enterprise-focused blockchain initiative aims to elevate the efficiency of trade finance. Going forward, it endeavors to broaden the applications of XDC Network's blockchain technology in global economic activities, with the emphasis remaining on trade finance and cross-border payments. The XDC Network, inaugurated in 2017, is a community-driven platform tailored explicitly for trade finance and payments. It introduces a smart contract system that streamlines global trade operations by tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) such as bonds, trade assets and trade documents. Operating on a high-speed, secure and cost-effective blockchain, XDC Network aspires to transform the landscape of trade finance. SBI Group has been actively involved in various services related to the XDC Network, including being the first exchange in Japan to handle XDC tokens. This was made possible through a partnership with SBI VC Trade, a company within the SBI Group specializing in crypto asset exchange services. Corda platform proof of conceptLogo design has been completed for the new entity, while a website has also been launched. Not wasting any time, the new company has already initiated a proof-of-concept (PoC) experiment. The experiment involves connecting the XDC Network with the Corda platform from SBI R3 Japan and the Corda Bridge from IMPEL GLOBAL. The PoC experiment revolves around conducting fiat payments generated by business-to-business transactions in XDC via Corda and the Corda Bridge. Leveraging a hybrid blockchain with both private and public characteristics, the objective is to attempt to offer a seamless one-stop service that settles both private and public aspects simultaneously. The company claims that this approach achieves an efficient and smooth payment method for cross-border transactions, including international trade, outshining conventional fiat currency transactions.
