Working towards mainnet launch

The funding round saw participation from prominent investors including Galxe, J17 Capital, JSquare, and TRGC, among others. Singapore’s Amber Group, a digital assets trading, products, and infrastructure firm, also participated. The additional capital will be used to facilitate the expansion of Shardeum’s ecosystem, leading up to the highly anticipated mainnet launch later this year. As part of that launch, it will also introduce $SHM, its native token. 5% of $SHM tokens are being allocated to ecosystem development and to community airdrops.

What is Shardeum?

Shardeum is a highly-scalable EVM-based layer-1 blockchain that utilizes dynamic state sharding. By employing dynamic state sharding, Shardeum ensures low gas fees and high transactions per second as the network expands. The platform achieves consensus at the transaction level, reducing the computational power required for validator nodes. This composition means that it’s engineered for linear scalability.

This consensus mechanism enables broad accessibility and increased decentralization by allowing anyone to run a node. Through the power of dynamic state sharding, Shardeum offers a scalable and secure solution that addresses the blockchain trilemma while ensuring decentralization for all participants.

Dynamic state sharding

Since its establishment in 2022, Shardeum has been focused on delivering a highly-scalable EVM-based layer-1 blockchain with dynamic state sharding capabilities. As of Friday, the Shardeum testnet has already witnessed over 7.4 million transactions, with over 820,000 accounts and more than 230,000 contracts deployed.

Kelsey McGuire, the Chief Growth Officer at Shardeum, expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the strategic raise, emphasizing the company’s commitment to cultivating a global and diverse community. McGuire highlighted Shardeum’s consensus design and the accessibility of validator participation, regardless of users’ computing resources. The additional funding will further support Shardeum’s dedication to decentralization by fostering worldwide community growth through educational initiatives and other key programs.

Initial $18.2M seed round

In addition to the aforementioned investors, the strategic raise attracted notable participants such as Bware Labs, Tané Labs, Hyperithm Group, and Luganodes, among others. This round follows Shardeum’s successful seed round in October 2022, which raised $18.2 million and involved backers such as Jane Street, Big Brain Holdings, Struck Crypto, The Spartan Group, Ghaf Capital, DFG, CoinGecko Ventures, and Foresight Ventures. Funding from that initial seed round went towards hiring more employees, expanding the Shardeum network, and growing its community.

A Shardeum project team member told The Block that the raise now places a valuation on the overall company of around $248 million. Shetty recently told Forbes that he believes Shardeum can be a direct competitor to Ethereum. The WazirX Founder outlined that the blockchain was envisioned on the basis of low fees and scalability regardless of the extent of the network growth that transpires.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.

Shares in Moon Inc. surge following 1 BTC purchase

Shares in Moon Inc. (formerly HK Asia Holdings Limited), a publicly listed Hong Kong-based firm that acts as an investment holding company while engaged in activities such as wholesale and retail sales of prepaid products such as SIM cards, have surged following the company’s symbolic purchase of one Bitcoin (BTC).Photo by Thought Catalog on Unsplash93% share price increaseThe stock (1723.HK), which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), closed at HKD 5.50 following Monday’s trading. That represents a 93% increase compared to the closing share price following the previous day’s trading. The share price has settled somewhat following Tuesday’s trading, pulling back 16% to HKD 4.60. However, it jumped again on Feb. 21, closing at HKD 6.48. Bitcoin adoptionIt’s believed that the stock has been influenced by a decision taken by the company to adopt Bitcoin. The firm bought just one Bitcoin. However, the move has led to speculation as to whether Moon Inc. will become the MicroStrategy (now rebranded as “Strategy”) of China.  Michael Saylor’s Strategy has pioneered the use of Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset. The company has positioned itself as the frontrunner in terms of the corporate adoption of Bitcoin. The company has amassed 471,000 Bitcoin within its reserves. This accounts for 2% of all Bitcoin. With Strategy’s Bitcoin playbook having been well documented, other companies now appear to be following its lead.  In recent weeks, Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company, has demonstrated that it is pursuing the same strategy, outlining its ambition to build a reserve of 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. On Feb. 18, it announced a 10-to-1 stock split in an effort to improve liquidity while executing on that overall Bitcoin treasury goal. Metaplanet shares have surged 3,900% over the course of the past 12 months on the back of its Bitcoin treasury pivot. On Feb. 16, Moon Inc. announced the purchase of its first Bitcoin at a unit price of $96,150. In a statement, the company said that the purchase was financed by way of the firm’s “internal resources.” An evolving global financial landscapeThe company’s board noted the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies in the commercial world, with particular emphasis on the use of Bitcoin as an investment portfolio asset. It believes that Bitcoin acts as a dependable store of value. It added: “The Board believes that this initial investment is symbolic in scale, and marks a significant step toward aligning with the evolving global financial landscape, and would diversify the Group’s investment portfolio and enhance its asset value.” The company’s stock rose significantly last month when details emerged of a 70% stock position in the firm, taken by UTXO Management, in collaboration with Sora Ventures and other investors. Recently appointed board member John Riggins of BTC Inc. said that this recent Bitcoin purchase by Moon Inc. “is more than a transaction.” He stated, “It’s a bold step toward creating a vision for the future of the company.”
