2023 World Journalists Conference

The 2023 World Journalists Conference, hosted by the Korean Press Association, commenced its six-day run on Tuesday, marking the event’s eleventh iteration. Being convened for the first time in four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference saw the attendance of over 70 journalists from 50 countries who were gathered to discuss the future of journalism in the context of digital transformation.

Token reward system

Kwon proposed a revenue model for media companies that incorporate a token reward system to encourage reader engagement.

Under this system, news enthusiasts can participate in various activities, such as reading and sharing articles, or leaving comments, and be rewarded with tokens. This approach can foster a sustainable community and cultivate a loyal customer base, enabling writers to prioritize journalism over creating clickbait articles. A more efficient advertisement distribution process can also be achieved through this system.

Blockchain technology

The news app developer aims to implement blockchain technology to enhance, rather than dismantle, the existing journalism model. Blockchain technology can be used to record and validate every activity in the news industry, which can then be rewarded with cryptocurrencies.

Publish’s decentralized identifier (DID) app enables users to take part in surveys without revealing their personal information, and will also support fundraising for news writing.

NFTs

Media companies can also explore additional revenue streams by creating non-fungible tokens (NFTs). By tokenizing their articles and photos, firms can establish ownership and authenticity, facilitating more efficient transactions.

Kwon noted that this blockchain-driven incentive system not only allows media organizations to improve their user experience, but also empowers readers to engage with journalism as active stakeholders, sharing its value in various ways.

Upbit upgrades matching engine to process KRW 1 quadrillion trading volume

Upbit upgrades matching engine to process KRW 1 quadrillion trading volumeSouth Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has enhanced its matching engine — which matches buy and sell orders from users on the exchange — to be able to handle a daily trading volume of KRW 1 quadrillion (approximately $757.3 billion), according to local news outlet Kyunghyang Games.Photo by Maxim Hopman on UnsplashBecause the crypto market operates nonstop without limits to time or borders, having a solid infrastructure that can seamlessly handle large amounts of data is crucial. Upbit has thus been working on its so-called “Stairway to Heaven” project for the past two years to upgrade its trading infrastructure, including its matching engine.Constant upgradesThe Stairway to Heaven is a long-term project in which Upbit’s operator Dunamu has invested a total of KRW 10 billion (approximately $7.6 million) to adjust to the rapidly advancing crypto industry and improve the performance of the entire market system. The upgradesThe main goal of the project is to upgrade Upbit’s matching engine to be cloud-native and horizontally scalable. The engine is now capable of supporting more than 40,000 transactions per second — a 25-fold increase from the previous version of the engine — allowing it to respond efficiently to surges in user traffic. In the event of a traffic spike, the system can handle more than 100,000 transactions per second with additional servers, the exchange said.“Unlike the way traditional finance approaches ledger management, our cloud-native architecture allows us to flexibly respond to surges in traffic,” Upbit said. “We will continue to make various system improvements to offer a stable investment environment.”Elevating the user experienceIn addition to upgrading its matching engine, Upbit has recently revamped its UI/UX to include price chart updates by second increments and an overview of profits and losses. Bitmain Planning Mining Equipment Support For Aleo Blockchain

Bitmain Planning Mining Equipment Support For Aleo BlockchainBitmain, the leading Beijing-headquartered crypto mining rig manufacturer, is set to bolster the proof-of-work (PoW) blockchain network of Aleo with its upcoming Antminer release. The firm announced its intentions via a social media post which was published on WeChat on Monday. The move follows Bitmain’s recent introductions of Filecoin and Kaspa mining machines and its latest series of Bitcoin miners.Photo by RDNE Stock project on PexelsEnhanced privacy through zk proofsBitmain plans to unveil a miner compatible with the forthcoming Aleo blockchain network which is currently in testnet mode. Aleo’s PoW blockchain promises to bring enhanced privacy through zero-knowledge (zk) proofs while retaining programmability. Zk proofs represent a cryptographic advancement insofar as they can verify data while it remains encrypted and undisclosed to the verifying party. The blockchain network adopts a statically typed programming language inspired by Rust, known as Leo.Aleo has been gaining significant attention in the crypto space, much like other venture capital-backed layer 1 blockchains, including Solana, Aptos, and NEAR, before their respective debuts. In April 2021, Aleo’s team successfully secured $28 million in a Series A funding round, with Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) leading the way.Aleo’s journey reached new heights in February 2022 when its Series B funding round raised a substantial $200 million, pushing the project into unicorn status. This funding round was jointly led by Softbank Vision Fund 2 and Kora Management LP, with participation from a16z, Tiger Global, Sea Capital, Slow Ventures, and Samsung Next.Latest in series of product launchesBitmain’s announcement is part of a series of product launches in recent months. In July, the company unveiled a mining rig designed for Filecoin (FIL). The following month marked the shipment of Bitmain’s Kaspa (KAS) mining machines. Shortly after the Kaspa deliveries, Bitmain revealed plans for an August release of a Monero (XMR) mining rig. Most recently, Bitmain introduced two next-generation Bitcoin (BTC) miners from the S21 series. The Chinese crypto mining equipment manufacturer has faced financial challenges in recent times. In April, it emerged that the company had been fined by the Chinese authorities for tax irregularities.Earlier this month, reports suggested that the company was experiencing liquidity issues. It failed to pay some of its employees although it later resolved the matter. Reports of staff payment difficulties surfaced two weeks ago. Arising out of that episode, the company subsequently fired three employees for posting information about salary payment issues on social media.Nevertheless, the firm managed to secure two contracts with US-based mining operations following those reports. In these contracts, Bitmain sold a combined 5.8 exahash per second (EH/s) of its new S21 Antminers to Iris Energy and Cleanspark. In September, Bitmain finalized a deal with troubled crypto miner Core Scientific that will see the firm supply the restructured company with 27,000 Bitcoin miners. The company has been blighted by internal conflicts going back a number of years between co-founders Jihan Wu and Zhan Ketuan. Subsequently Wu went on to found Singapore-headquartered crypto cloud mining platform Bitdeer.

Dubai Regulator Suspends BitOasis’ Crypto License

Dubai Regulator Suspends BitOasis’ Crypto LicenseDubai’s pioneering cryptocurrency exchange, BitOasis, has had its operating license suspended by the city’s cryptocurrency regulator for failing to meet key conditions within the required timeframes. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) took enforcement action against BitOasis and initiated a review of the Dubai-based firm.BitOasis was granted a conditional license on April 12, which allowed it to operate on the condition that it met specific requirements within 30 to 60 days. However, the exchange has failed to fulfill these conditions, leading to the suspension of its license. VARA did not disclose the exact nature of the unmet conditions, but it stated that until they are satisfied, BitOasis’ “License for Institutional and Qualified Retail Investors” will remain non-operational.Photo by iridial on UnsplashFirst MVP broker-dealer license holderBitOasis had received the first “minimum viable product operational license” from VARA, enabling it to offer broker-dealer services to qualified institutional and retail investors in Dubai. This license represents a crucial step towards obtaining a full market product (FMP) license, but as of now, no firm has been issued an FMP license by VARA.To become eligible for the FMP license, BitOasis must fulfill the conditions specified in its current license, as outlined by VARA. The regulatory authority has emphasized its commitment to monitoring the situation for compliance remediation.OPNX reprimandThis recent development follows VARA’s reprimand of Su Zhu and Kyle Davies, the co-founders of the now-defunct crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, in April. The duo had operated and promoted their new OPNX crypto exchange in Dubai without the necessary license, catching VARA’s attention.BitOasis addressed the regulatory concerns in a blog post on Tuesday, affirming its collaboration with VARA to meet the remaining conditions for the Operational MVP License. The exchange clarified that the issue with its license does not impact other services provided, such as broker-dealer services for existing retail users. It also took to Twitter on Tuesday to clarify the situation. The company has suspended new user registrations until further notice, presumably as it works towards meeting VARAs licensing requirements.BitOasis stated: “You can continue to use BitOasis with the assurance that your assets are safe, secure, and held at their full value on our platform, and our team will continue to cooperate with the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority and fulfill all post-operational license terms, as well as working towards a full market product license.”The firm referred to the “unique challenges” that are associated with licensing and suggested that it is determined to address them and to “be a leader in the virtual assets sector.”The suspension of BitOasis’ license highlights the stringent regulatory environment in Dubai’s cryptocurrency sector. VARA is demonstrating that it remains committed to enforcing compliance and ensuring that crypto exchanges meet the necessary requirements. BitOasis must rectify the issues and meet the conditions of its license to regain its operational status and proceed towards obtaining the coveted full market product license in the future.
