Korean expansion

Taking to Twitter, Alchemy Pay stated that it “will continue to enhance [its] global market presence by bringing forward [its] payment solutions and services to the Korean market, providing an easy onboard from fiat to cryptocurrencies for more Korean companies.” It’s understood that the high level of acceptance of digital assets in Korea is attractive to Alchemy as something it can capitalize on.

Alchemy’s Ecosystem Lead, Robert McCracken, stated in a Medium blog article that while this investment was pursued relative to a specific and strategic decision to enter the Korean market, the company is otherwise well funded.

DWF funding spree

DWF Labs’ investment of $10 million in Alchemy Pay marks its eighth investment or funding round of at least $10 million into Web3 and crypto projects in the past six weeks, with a combined total of $165 million.

According to DWF’s managing partner Andrei Grachev, the current bearish market is an opportune time to enter the investment space. Grachev stated to CoinDesk that the company has accumulated enough profits to invest in projects at present.

With offices in Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and the British Virgin Islands (BVI), DWF Labs fits the role of a global multi-stage Web3 investment firm. It collaborates and partners with portfolio companies with regard to activities such as market making, token listing and Over The Counter (OTC) trading solutions.

$ACH boost

Alchemy Pay’s native token, $ACH, has a market capitalization of around $188 million. Buoyed by today’s announcement, the token was trading at $0.03885 at the time of publication. That’s a surge in value in dollar terms of around 16%, although it’s still quite a ways off its all time high of $0.18468, achieved on August 6, 2021, at the height of the last crypto bull run.

In a press release published on Monday, Alchemy Pay described itself as “a payment gateway that seamlessly connects crypto and global fiat currencies for businesses, developers, and users.”

Founded in 2018, the company has previously collaborated with Visa, Mastercard, Google Pay, and Apple Pay for this purpose. Cryptocurrency and derivatives exchange OKX recently integrated Alchemy Pay into its platform, in order to simplify the process of purchasing cryptocurrency using local currencies for its customers.

NFT Checkout

Apart from its payment services, Alchemy Pay has also launched its innovative NFT Checkout service. The service allows customers to purchase NFTs using fiat payment options, making it as easy as any other standard online payment method. This function enables users to acquire NFTs with their local domestic currencies, providing a seamless purchasing experience.

The platform offers over 300 local alternative payment channels, enabling it to extend its reach beyond traditional credit cards into local mobile wallet options. The footprint of the business now extends across Northern and Latin America, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Crypto emerges as topic in Indonesian election campaign

Crypto emerges as topic in Indonesian election campaignAs Indonesia gears up for its upcoming presidential election, the country’s crypto market has become a focal point for political discourse. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, a vice presidential candidate and the eldest son of President Joko Widodo, recently unveiled his plans to foster expertise in blockchain and crypto within the Southeast Asian nation.Chosen as the running mate for presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, the 36-year-old politician aims to elevate tech education in Indonesia, opening avenues for the younger generation, particularly in the realm of digital assets. According to a report by Indonesian online news portal detikNews, while speaking at a political gathering on Dec. 10, Gibran asserted:“We are preparing blockchain experts, we are preparing cyber security experts, we are preparing crypto experts.”Photo by Nick Agus Arya on UnsplashCrypto potentialIndonesia has emerged as being ahead of the curve in terms of crypto adoption, ranking seventh on Chainalysis’ 2023 global crypto adoption index. With an estimated 18 million crypto investors, the country boasts a robust industry association that also functions as a self-regulatory body.Local news media reported in October that the Southeast Asian country has seen a 10.1% year-on-year increase in the number of crypto investors. At the time, Tirta Karma Senjaya, Head of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, said, "Growth in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia continues to increase, but investors are still looking for the right time to buy crypto.”Private sector entities have also identified the raw potential. In the same month, Web3 consulting firm Tiger Research, in partnership with South Korean crypto data platform Xangle, produced a report which identified significant potential for the development of Indonesia’s Web3 market. There are over 30 crypto exchanges operating in the country, acting as the primary channel through which growth in crypto is propelled in Indonesia.Capitalizing on crypto interestThe government, under President Widodo, has actively sought to capitalize on this crypto enthusiasm, going as far as establishing a local “stock market” dedicated to crypto assets.Gibran’s proactive stance on crypto education aligns with his broader vision of positioning Indonesia at the forefront of the global digital revolution. The country’s rapidly growing tech landscape and crypto adoption make it an opportune space for fostering expertise in these cutting-edge technologies. As the presidential election approaches, Gibran’s commitment to cultivating a pool of crypto experts underscores the potential influence of the crypto industry in shaping Indonesia’s economic future. An international topicCrypto is increasingly becoming an important topic in elections globally. In the United States, many of the presidential candidates, particularly within the Republican Party, have publicly expressed their interest in crypto and blockchain. Yesterday, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse took to the X social media platform on the subject, stating:”Team @Ripple is putting a stake in the ground, leading the charge with other industry leaders to support pro-innovation and pro-crypto candidates in the 2024 US election cycle. The US cannot afford to continue taking a back seat on the global stage.“With Indonesia’s election frontrunners, Prabowo and Gibran, expressing interest in the sector, it remains to be seen how this focus on crypto will resonate in the upcoming political debate on Feb. 4.

Report: Asia Set to Dominate Web3 Gaming Market

Report: Asia Set to Dominate Web3 Gaming MarketA new report has revealed that Asia is poised to dominate the growing Web3 gaming market, accounting for as much as 80% of all players. The study, conducted by Japanese firm Pacific Meta and DappRadar, found that the region already accounts for 55% of the global gaming population, with 1.7 billion players.©Pexels/Lucie LizThe report identified that the role-playing genre is the most popular in Asia, with games such as Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star Online and Genshin Impact ranking highly.Legal restrictionsThe research noted that legal restrictions on gaming are prevalent across the region, with China only allowing gamers under 18 to play for one hour a day and blockchain games all but banned in South Korea. Despite these restrictions, the report argued that Nexon’s Web3 play with MapleStory Universe and Square Enix’s upcoming Web3 game Symbiogenesis are two examples of crypto games gaining traction in the East. Both games will use the Polygon blockchain, currently the most preferred network for Web3 gaming from a game studio perspective. The report also concluded that Web3 gaming is a “natural” fit for the Asian market because of the types of games to which the market is accustomed. It argues that as Web3 games become more focused on gameplay over financials, Western and Eastern audiences will come to expect similar experiences.A developing understanding of Web3 gamesTo better understand the market, Pacific Meta surveyed over 1,000 adults in Japan and found that 40% knew about blockchain games. Among those who knew about such games, nearly 57% said Web3 games “seemed interesting”, while roughly 10% said they did not seem interesting. Notably, about 33% said “neither”, suggesting they were perhaps unsure about Web3 games and hadn’t yet formed an opinion on them. When asked about the types of blockchain games they would be interested in, 773 out of the 1,030 surveyed said that they would like a game to be free-to-play, and that initial cost was an important feature to them. 538 said that they would like the game to be playable on a mobile phone. Player earnings, game quality, consoles, and famous IP scored lower on the list.Long road to mainstream adoptionThe report highlights that the nascent industry still has a ways to go before it sees mainstream adoption. Nevertheless, big brands such as Razer and FIFA are doubling down on Web3 gaming projects. With the Asian market poised to take a dominant role in Web3 gaming, developers will need to tailor their offerings to suit the preferences of the region’s gamers. The Web3 gaming market in Asia is enormous and is expected to dominate the global market, with Japan a key market for growth. Developers will need to focus on the role-playing genre and create free-to-play mobile games to appeal to gamers in the region. As the Web3 gaming market continues to grow, and blockchain technology advances, it is likely that we will see more games and platforms targeting Asian gamers in the coming years.

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing Businesses

Crypto Exchange Bithumb’s Operator Closing BusinessesBithumb Korea, the operator of a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, has been streamlining its businesses in response to its ongoing struggle to generate profits.Photo by Tim Mossholder on PexelsAccording to a report by local news outlet Business Watch, Bithumb Systems, a tech solution subsidiary of Bithumb Korea, has recently ceased operations. Bithumb System was launched in March of last year with the aim of advancing blockchain and exchange technology. However, due to the decline in the crypto industry and challenges in profitability, the company had to undergo liquidation. An official from Bithumb Korea explained that the decision to close its tech solution arm was made in order to prioritize improving the competence of the exchange amidst the changing landscape of domestic and foreign markets.Other affiliates of Bithumb Korea are also facing difficulties. For instance, Bithumb Live, an e-commerce platform jointly established by Bithumb Korea and content production firm Bucket Studio, has been on hiatus since October last year. The platform incurred a net loss of 10 billion KRW ($7.75 million). Bithumb Korea, holding 37.5% of Bithumb Live’s shares, invested 6 billion KRW ($4.65 million) into the platform in 2021. Bithumb Korea recognizes these investment losses using the equity method.Additionally, Bithumb META, despite raising the highest amount of funds among its sister affiliates, has encountered challenges in making much progress since its establishment last year. Its NFT marketplace, Naemo Market, is still without a mobile application, and the introduction of its metaverse platform is still pending. Although Bithumb META managed to attract 9 billion KRW in investments last March from esteemed companies such as LG CNS, CJ OliveNetworks, and SK Square, it incurred a loss of 7 billion KRW ($5.4 million) in 2022.Furthermore, earlier this month, it was reported that the exchange closed its research center due to a decline in trading volume, despite its importance in assisting investors to make better-informed decisions.A representative from Bithumb stated that the company is actively seeking new sources of revenue through its mobile Wallet platform operator, Rotonda, and Bithumb META. However, given the market slowdown, Bithumb is now compelled to prioritize enhancing the competence of the exchange.
